Id say so and that would mean $30m minimum for Alvin.

What is impressive is that the grade has gone back up to a B+

Like i said kids are really digging this and even adults because it is a much better movie than the ad campaign suggested it to be. I thought it will be a movie with fart and poo poo jokes. But surprising whatever u see in the trailers is the only kind of joke.

It is a movie that gives a good and clean message.

I think the tv campaign really sold the cute chipmunk aspect. Who doesn't love cute chipmunks? God, even I kinda wanted to see it. :disgust:

I was amazed to here a couple friends point out the spot and how much they want to see it even when we weren't paying attention to the TV. Oy.

At least this'll finally reinvigorate the box office? *Shrugs*

2006: CW made 77% of its gross after Night At The Museum came out.
2005: CBTD2 made $82 m from a $9.3 m 3day opening (5day $14.6 m)
2004: Lemony Snicket dropped 58% in its 2nd weekend, and yet had a 3.98 multiplier.

I think its fair to say that Alvin and the Chipmunks, even with NT2, with its under 10 demos, will NOT be dropping as badly as Lemony Snicket. a 5.0 X + multiplier would be a very strong possiblility imo considering the holiday weekend. There's a big difference between Scooby Doo/Garfield, and Alvin and the Chipmunks, ie the winter season vs the summer season.

Lemony Snicket was exactly what I was thinking with this, which is why I think it will get around a 4.0 multiplier.

that movie was darker than A&C.

Do you really think Alvin and the Chipmunks, which is aimed at the under 10 crowd, is going to drop 58% against NT2, and recover only enough to match Lemony Snicket? Again, under ten crowd... :P

I Am Legend - 2158 (455), +196 (+44), B+
Alvin and the Chipmunks - 1164 (92), +85 (+9), B+

Still very good pace for both. Look like $20m+ for I Am Legend and $9m+ for Chipmunks, unless we see some unexpected high ratios, but I can't see a reason.

I think it is like the Simpsons were some people really love the property and want to share their enthusiasm by posting a review.

I still think it did quite well.

Final numbers:

I Am Legend - 2292 (482), +134 (+27), B+
Alvin and the Chipmunks - 1190 (97), +26 (+5), B+

If FM's estimates hold, it will be a ratio of 80 for I Am Legend and 90 for Chipmunks, very normal for both genres.

You have five wide releases next week, which will cut screens. You have NT2 which will be a monster and will appeal more to under 10 than A&C (IT'S FUCKING DISNEY!).

Oh, and it should be noted that The Water Horse comes out Christmas Day, and that appelas to under 10 as well.

Yes, it is holidays, but...this faces a lot of competition. It's going to have it screen count go down, and it will have two major family-films go up against it.

I don't think it is really a lock even for a 4.0 multiplier, though I think it will get it.

magnus is just pissed that A&C did very well and on top of that it is a fox movie.

Both have already surpassed FRI's ratings for SAT significantly.... Especially I Am Legend. And Catzan over at HSX says that Alvin is way up at his theatre/area? and that Legend may be beating it's FRI performance as well..

I'm pretty sure I Am Legend was on frontpage today, making any comparison with yesterday moot.

I know it's early, but assuming they make around what you estimated for the weekend xiayun, what kind of totals would we be looking at for Legend and Alvin?

I would wait until today's numbers are known to get a better idea on the IMs. :)
