5. CHILDREN OF MEN (Alfonso Cuarón, 2006)

"I was told to tell you that you're a fascist pig."

This is for all you haters. I absolutely admire and love this film. And for those of you who think it's too recent, I've seen it more times than most of the films on my list. A dark, uncompromising, and brilliant look at the future. One of the few sci-fi films without robots or space travel or time travel as a main concepts - it's just infidelity. And the story's not even about that, it's just about one man's journey. The much-ballyhooed cinematography is deserving of all the praise, and the scenes in which it is shown off are simply breathtaking. It's not even a year old, sure, but I feel certain that it will be seen as a classic in the years to come.

Not sure how many Children of Men haters there are.

If I recall correctly everyone seemed to love that film.

4. FIGHT CLUB (David Fincher, 1999)

"Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else."

I feel like I've been overusing the term 'brilliant' on my list. And I probably have. But if any film is deserving of that term, it's this one. Its biggest accomplishment may be that it was able to successfully adapt Chuck Palahniuk's novel. The themes and messages in both works are the same. But the film is able to add a dark sense of humour and some truly bizarre images on top of that. An endlessly entertaining film, but also a very important and controversial one.

Hmm... I'd like to maybe do a list once.

If any of you even want me to. It'll be filled with 90% mainstream films, 80% from the 90s on.

It would also be over in 2-3 days. Which means minimal pain.

3. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (Stanley Kubrick, 1968)

"Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over."

Simply a cinematic masterpiece. One of the greatest films ever made, sci-fi or not. A complete innovation, both in its narrative and in its form. The widescreen is utilized like few films had used before, and the wide shots of spaceships is much more impressive ten years before Star Wars. The story is very visual, very image-based, and very unique. The lack of dialogue, or meaningful dialogue, doesn't matter because the images mean everything. The final shot is both incredibly frustrating and incredibly brilliant.

2. BLADE RUNNER (Ridley Scott, 1982)

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

As innovative and ground-breaking as any film on my list. The combination of my two favourite genres works perfectly. The story is thought-provoking and layered, and has even more levels added when the multiple versions of the film are factored in. Ford's performance, while not as iconic as his other roles, is pretty fantastic nonetheless. The visuals are impressive today, and simply astounding for being twenty-five years old. The ideas of humanity and creation brought up are nothing new, but applied to the sci-fi locale, it's a work of genius. Simply one of the greatest films in any genre.

1. DONNIE DARKO (Richard Kelly, 2001)

"Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?"

Yep, here it is. The unconventional pick for my favourite film. It may not be the most innovative, or the most thought-provoking, or the most entertaining, but it's my favourite. It's got so many different genres crammed into one. Drama, comedy, romance? Check. Sci-fi, fantasy, horror? Check. Mystery, thriller, noir? Check. It's just a brilliant combination of everything. The story is so out there that it takes many repeat viewings and research to just figure it out, and the visuals, while admittedly cheap, are still fairly impressive. Jake Gyllenhaal has never topped this performance, and the ensemble cast is lesser-known but solid. It's a strange, weird, bizarre film, but I love it.

P.S. This is one of the few films that has a worse Director's Cut than theatrical cut. Stick to the original version.

I agree with you about the directors cut, which is sadly the version I have on DVD. It's still a good movie, but it seems to try and explain more about what's going on, but actually manages to confuse me further....

So, thanks to everyone who followed and commented on my list. I had a lot of fun presenting it. It's incredibly modern and mainstream, and I'm sure (I hope) it'll change over time, but it's a good snapshot of what my film tastes were like right now. Thanks again!

Yeah, me too. Those superimposed book pages... terrible. The original cut left more open to interpretation.

Interesting. I had no idea you were such a fan.

It's baffling to me how this didn't crack the top 15 of the KJ 100 movies.
