I have yet to see American Graffiti. Does that make me a bad person? I really want to.

trixster wrote: 94. THE DESCENT (Neil Marshall, 2005)"I'm an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider."One of the most purely terrifying films ever made. Even without the monsters, the tension that develops from the claustrophobic setting is incredible. And once the monsters are introduced, it's game over. The characters are developed well, despite the short running time, and the ending is pure brilliance. Not the butchered American ending, though, but the original European ending. Of course.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
90. X-MEN (Bryan Singer, 2000)"You homo sapiens and your guns."This one is pretty underrated in my opinion. Most people agree that it's a solid comic book flick, but easily bested by its sequel. While I agree that the second one is better, this one is pretty damn great on its own. It's got the framework of the themes that would be fleshed out in the sequel, giving the film more depth than some might think. Add in a terrific cast, especially Hugh Jackman's breakout performance, great action, and superb effects, and this is the best start to a comic book franchise.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
89. PULP FICTION (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)"Mmmm, this is a tasty burger. Mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this down with?"A lot of you will complain that I have this too low, but I find it slightly overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a terrific film, but one of the greatest ever made? Not for me. The dialogue is superb and Samuel L. Jackson is without equal in this film, and the interweaving storylines work perfectly. The Bruce Willis bit drags it down, in my opinion, but only because it's lacking the great chemistry that Travolta and Jackson show. It's still great, though.

88. THE WIZARD OF OZ (Victor Fleming, 1939)"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"The first film I ever watched. Nostalgia, more than anything, makes this one of my favourites. The songs are iconic and the visuals are astounding. The bit in the witch's castle with the flying monkeys is still as scary for me as when I first saw it.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
87. THE EXORCIST III (William Peter Blatty, 1990)"I still hear from her occasionally, screaming. I think the dead should shut up, unless there's something to say."If not for the studio-forced ending with a silly exorcism, this would be just as great as the original film. As it stands, it's one of the scariest films ever made. Blatty proves to be just as capable at directing as writing, as the extra-long takes are what make the horror scenes that much more frightening. The dream sequence is wonderfully abstract and imaginative, and the story is a clever mix inspired by both the Zodiac killer and the events in the original film. Definitely the biggest rise in quality from a second film to a third film.

The first good superhero movie. And I agree about Pulp Fiction. I might have it just a little higher though.

86. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (Henry Selick, 1993)"Jack, please, I'm only an elected official here, I can't make decisions by myself!"My favourite animated film. Burton's trademark style mixed with terrific stop-motion animation. Danny Elfman is on top form here, not only composing and writing the songs but singing most of them as well. Dark, creative, whimsical, and - best of all - funny.

85. PLEASANTVILLE (Gary Ross, 1998)"I don't know if I ever told you this before, but I think you're just about the keenest girl in the whole school!" "Oh, really Skip? The keenest?"Wonderfully innovative, frequently hilarious, and emotionally moving. The transition from black & white to colour is amazingly accomplished both technically and narratively. The entire cast - save for Tobey Maguire, who's as goofy as ever - is excellent, and the script is heart-warming without being cheesy or stupid.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
84. THE INVISIBLE MAN (James Whale, 1933)"Would you mind getting the car? It's a bit cold outside, when you have to go about naked."The best of the Universal horror classics. Claude Rains gives a chilling performance that is made even more remarkable by the fact that his face isn't seen until the final scene. The visual effects are impressive even today, making them truly astonishing for being seventy years old. It's also the best adaptation of an H.G. Wells novel, though it doesn't have much competition on that front.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
83. THE DEPARTED (Martin Scorsese, 2006)"With everybody looking up their own ass, and you looking for yourself, I'd put my money on nobody finding nothing."The first of six Best Picture winners on my list. Just non-stop entertainment from start to finish. Nicholson and Wahlberg steal scenes like there's no tomorrow, but DiCaprio is the real star of the film, showing that his pretty boy image is long gone. And that climax - while shocking and off-putting to some - is the perfect conclusion to the film. One of the few correct choices the Academy has made.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
 82. FIELD OF DREAMS (Phil Alden Robinson, 1989)"Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa."I'm no fan of baseball. I find it an incredibly slow-paced sport full of whiny players and silly stats. But I love this film. It's just pure magical filmmaking. Costner is great in one of his better roles, and the story is moving and intelligent. A baseball movie for those of us who hate the sport.

Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists: trixster!
81. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (Gore Verbinski, 2003)"You best start believing in ghost stories Miss Turner. You're in one."Before the crappy sequels that inevitably plague all surprise hit movies, this was a true popcorn film. It was entertaining and fun not because of its giant action scenes, but due to its characters and the chemistry between them. Though neither Bloom or Knightley show much of it between each other, Depp and Rush exalt so much of it on their own that it more than makes up for it. The music is great, the effects are impressive, and the story is solid without being too complicated. A true crowd-pleaser.
