Most people agree that it's a solid comic book flick, but easily bested by its sequel. While I agree that the second one is better, this one is pretty damn great on its own. It's got the framework of the themes that would be fleshed out in the sequel, giving the film more depth than some might think. Jackson is without equal in this film, and the interweaving storylines work perfectly. The Bruce Willis bit drags it down, in my opinion, but only because it's lacking the great chemistry that Travolta and Jackson show. As it stands, it's one of the scariest films ever made. Blatty proves to be just as capable at directing as writing, as the extra-long takes are what make the horror scenes that much more frightening. The dream sequence is wonderfully abstract and imaginative, and the story is a clever mix inspired by both the Zodiac killer and the events in the original film. It was entertaining and fun not because of its giant action scenes, but due to its characters and the chemistry between them. Though neither Bloom or Knightley show much of it between each other, Depp and Rush exalt so much of it on their own that it more than makes up for it. The music is great, the effects are impressive, and the story is solid without being too complicated.
