I have to be honest BJ, your application didn't inspire the immediate gag reflex I was expecting when I saw that you had posted in this thread. Small victories, my friend. Small victories. However, Overrated Summer Blockbuster B, Iron Man, Cloverfield, Tropic Thunder, Twilight, The Chronicles of Narnia (seriously? what the fuck), and Sex Drive reads more like a list of movies you'd take your grandparents to (y'know, cause they like it when things move and stuff) instead of a top ten.

I'm honestly getting a little sick of Stanley Kubrick's esteemed name being sandwich in with no-talent hacks, and any list dealing with anything that begins with anything related to Star Wars is an automatic waste of time.

Denied.

Seriously.

I'm wondering if you guys have actually seen any Kubrick films, or if you're just throwing his name in here because you know that we love him.

Regardless, it's the lowest form of pandering (especially since most of you seem unable to even guess one of Kubrick's films), and it's disgusting.

Yes, but the lack of any of those films in your top ten is telling.

So the fact I think he's one of the best directors but one of his movies doesn't lie in my top 10 (I'd say at least two of them would be in my top twenty, if that somehow "makes it better") means I'm "pandering" and "throwing his name in there"? That is ridiculous.

Hey, this is the snob/elitist club. Not the James Berardinelli fan club, where we all pat each other on the back for having seen so many old movies.

I have not watched any of the high quality films that have come out in the last two months yet, but allas the top 10 will look tolerable soon, your dislike for Iron-Man is fewlish. I have only seen three Kubrick films, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, not enough for me to put him #1 but with many other Kubrick films on my list I would not be surprised if he topped QT.

But I would like clarification! I, along with everyone else who named Stanley Kubrick, was essentially called out for pandering and accused of lying about my appreciation for him.

This thread might be all in good fun but that's not sitting right with me.

Seriously, guys. You need to stop getting so hot and bothered about this. You call us 'film snobs', using that term as a derogatory insult to refer to those of us who apparently don't like being entertained (?), and then when we embrace that mentality, you all want to join! And then we when shoot you down for not being snobbish enough, you take offense!

Don't reply if you don't want to be snarkily attacked.

I'm not taking offense with the "judge people's movie taste" aspect. I'm taking offense with how you implied we were exaggerating/lying about our movie tastes to impress you. What gives you the right to do that? That's not what this thread is about.

I certainly don't think I need to lie when my top 10 includes movies like Clueless and When Harry Met Sally, which you would undoubtedly tell me I should be shot for including or something.

Top 4 Directors
Stanley Kubrick
Alfred Hitchcock
James Cameron
David Lynch

I also bring to the attention of the elitist club my immense hatred of one Steven Spielberg. I think Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler's List, AND Saving Private Ryan are massively overrated.

Top 5
1. Zoolander
2. All About Eve
3. Moulin Rouge
4. The Princess Bride
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Shack,

This is an interesting situation for me. We've had some fairly heated movie-related arguments in the past, and it seems readily clear that we don't see eye to eye. However, you have displayed a fair amount of good taste, and occasionally surprise me with your thoughtful analysis of certain films.

Your top ten is hit and miss. The inclusions of Happy-Go-Lucky and Synechdoche, New York (perhaps the de facto snob movie of the year) are intriguing, but once again Overrated Summer Blockbuster A is included, and the baffling love for Cloverfield continues. I'd say I'm leaning slightly towards a positive reaction to it, but that could easily be swayed into negative territory once a couple of those movies inevitably end up in the chopping block.

I'm disappointed you've decided to not list a full five directors. I don't know if this was merely an oversight, or if you're trying to mask something. It's a solid, if not overly original or surprising list, but the inclusion of James Cameron is simultaneously baffling and infuriating, especially considering the company he is in.

Your top 5 is a different beast altogether, and frankly I'm a bit surprised by how borderline awful it is. I'd only consider one of those movies an acceptable title (All About Eve), and still find that one to be slightly overrated. Your undying affection for Zoolander is depressing.

I also tend to agree with Yoshue's comments about your Spielberg hatred. While I am definitely part of the Spielberg is vastly overrated and the majority of his work is mediocrity sprinkled with occassional moments of brilliance club, to just out-and-out ignore the fact that he has made some supremely masterful movies seems like a giant misstep.

I don't know, this is a tough decision. I will allow my co-chairman to respond, and then we will discuss this application.

It's called sarcasm?

All of my replies here have been in good fun. I don't actually think you people are lying about your love of Kubrick, it was just something I noticed and I though it would stir up some controversy. Which evidently it has.

It's just that sarcasm loses a lot of its flavour when you have to constantly explain yourself.

ANYWAYS, back on track.

Shack, great top 10, solid directors, rather lame films. I think your taste is only getting better, so I'd be inclined to include you. I'll have to discuss this with my co-chairman, though.

Oh I thought you asked for a top 4... seems like that's what the rest were posting

#5 would be uhhhhhhh Tarantino. sry.

If it makes you feel better I love Jaws and quite like ET among the Berg's early repetoire. I don't have as much qualms with Raiders as I do much of his films recently, though it is not zomg.

For the record a number of close calls in the top 5 would be "snobyz": Alien, Halloween, Dr. Strangelove, Mulholland Drive, Rear Window, Psycho, Sunrise, The Big Lebowski, I'm Not There

You should have left it at four.

I would have preferred to see virtually any of these listed as opposed to what we currently have.

After three PMs much deliberation, we have decided to grant Shack allowance into the society. Understand that this was highly contested and very close, and the overriding factor we returned to was that your taste has gotten markedly better over the years, and you seem to be actively trying to become a full-fledged snob.

Welcome!

6. Funny Games
7. The Strangers
8. Burn After Reading
9. Cloverfield
10. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Top Five Directors:

1. Stanley Kubrick

4. Quentin Tarantino
5. Guillermo del Toro

Top Five of All-Time:

1. Halloween
2. The Exorcist
3. The Shining
4. Pan's Labyrinth
5. Black Christmas

I appreciate your love of horror, and this is aptly reflected with your inclusion of Let the Right One In and The Strangers in your top ten. But when you also include a triumvirate of vastly overrated films (Animated-POS-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Iron Man) in your top five, that has to be taken into account.

I get the sense that people are including Kubrick just so they'll be taken seriously, especially when they neglect to mention THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME in their top five. Not to say The Shining isn't deserving (it certainly is), but Pan's Labyrinth? Really? Of all-time?

I love Cuaron and del Toro as much as the next guy, but I don't think they're experienced or, frankly, talented enough to be listed as top five directors of all-time. And Carpenter and QT are both wildly overrated fanboy directors.

Also, remembering your blind and irrational dismissal of one of the greatest films ever made, The Night of the Hunter, I just can't bring myself to allow you in. So, sorry, I'm going to have to agree with makeshift and say no.

I forgot about this.

I should point out that I've watched Night of the Hunter three times since I posted that and have pulled a complete 180° on the movie. I say this so that you'll take me seriously in future film discussions.
