46. The French Connection- 1971

Image

Great Great Movie. The 70s had great cop films and this one is up there with Dirty Harry. Except this time its Gene Hackman, who started to just explode into superstardom with this, Poseidon Adventure, Young Frankenstein, and Superman. Its dark, gritty, and exciting throughout. I have to say I just saw bullit for the first time and I can't believe that chase was ever even in contention with the car chase in this one. It's slow and shot from such an awkward POV that I never feel anything. This chase on the other hand is rediculously fast, and is filled with desperation. There are so many things I would say are the best in this movie. Best car chase (Or rather elevated train chase), best tail (The different cops tailing the different villians, as they get made is flawless, ending with the french guy waving at Gene is such a slap in the face) Best wave, when Hackman finally looks to win, his wave and the look on the French guy's face is priceless. And the ending is just out of the this world, ending with complete uncertainty and darkness, and the score goes great with it.

Popeye Doyle goes down as one of the best cops ever on screen. This is a film they should show in filmclasses, especially mine, that showed Dude Wheres my car? WTF, I couldnt help but think my teacher was an idiot.

45. Psycho- 1960

Image

I don't care how old this film is, like many others on this list, Psycho is trendsetter, and will remain so. Brilliant for a few reasons. It kills the main character off halfway into the film, The Shower scene, the disturbing ending with Perkins, and amazing dives into the human psyche are explored. Do you feel bad for Janet Leigh's character, and the same goes for Norman Bates, he could be good, or bad. The black and white gives the film great mood and Hitchcock never disappoints with a very creepy and sometimes terrifying film to think about. Is the catalyst for staying in hotels that you should just past, mama's boys, and of course checking hotels for peepholes, or at least locking the dam door. To this day, I find myself always taking a shower and glancing through my glass doors. Hitchcock has made great films of course, but never as good as Psycho in my opinion, and considering its a horror movie, thats an accomplishment. (I love Vertigo, Rear Window, North By Northwest, and countless others he's made.)

Get Shorty is terrific. I'm not a fan of French Connection. Psycho is classic, of course.

I really, really don't like Temple of Doom. Not because it's darker, but because it has terrible acting (pretty much from everyone save for Ford) and a terrible script. I would have welcomed a darker Indiana Jones that was actually well-made.

44. The Road Warrior- 1981

Image

Low Budget used to its fullest. Great apocolyptic setting and Mad Max is better than ever. After a very good opening film, the Road warrior goes a step further to make Austrailia look like a wasteland, and succeeded completely. It's a simple idea that those with gasoline are the ones everyone wants, because everyone needs to be able to drive. The villians are cartoony, including the Jason wannabe, though I think this actually came out in Austrailia before Friday the 13th so I think that guy can hold claim to it. And the final chase is superb, and should be on anyones top lists. A very solid film that most people don't get to see unless they're really into movies.

Excellent Movie, and ripped off badly on numerous occasions since release.

43. The Blues Brothers- 1980

Image

Before the Matrix, before the Men in black, and before Pulp Fiction, two men originated the black sunglasses and black suit combo. This was their story. What can I say, My favorite musical. My favorite SNL film, and just cool. Featurin the best of the best blues musicians, it hard to not like. Belushi and Akyroyd have great chemistry together and John Belushi will be missed. Great cameos throughout the film, and its got a great soundtrack, music numbers, and humor. And while I love French Connection, Great Escape, and Raiders, Blues very well has the best car chase of all time. It's got a great blend of hysterical moments as well as hardcore driving. And have more cars ever been more destroyed? A Steven Speilberg cameo at the end, Illinois Nazis, Carrie Fischer, and John Candy. Awesome movie.

42. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers- 2002

Image

Yes, Yes, there is a LOTR on my list, and in my opinion the best of the three. Fellowship used to be on the list but it was taken off after a while, and ROTK was never on there. A huge Disappointment in my oppinion, but the first and 2nd were great movies. The 2nd has the most power in my opinion, as it goes the ESB route and separates different stories. Maybe its because it focuses more on Aragorn and the rest of the fellowship takes a back seat. But their part of the film is spectacular. I love the Exorcism and Helms Deep is one of the best battles I've ever seen on film. Meanwhile Frodo and Sam start that uneasy friendship with Gollum, who is a Technical delight. I think everything that was good about the first film is improved upon on almost ever layer, and left me far more satisfied then ROTK

41. The Princess Bride- 1987

One of my favorite films growing up, and still is today. Rob Reiners best film. A great romance mixed with humor, and a cliched fairy Tale (but that's why its great) Filled with my favorite sword fight of all time, and one of the best lines of all time from one of the best characters of all time, Inigo Montoya "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, You killed my father, prepare to die" This movie is just superb in its setting, characters, action, and very endearing love story. Cary Elwes was a great actor and this movie perfectly shows it. Theres not much to say about this film, it's amazing and theres not many films I find better.

Maybe not the best wording, but I find the stories in this one much more interesting them Frodo and Sam still doing the same thing. Not to say that their scenes werent great, the side storylines were much better in this one.

40. Scream- 1996

Image

The movie that redifined the Horror Genre. It made slashers great again, and while almost all the plot devices are from other movies, it turned slashers back to the cool. No superher human, a guy that actually runs and isn't super strong. The teens are stupid, but at least realistically stupid, funny and self aware of everything. While people don't like to call it a spoof due to its violence and language, but dont think it should be considered to be anything different. I think its easily one of the best horror films ever made, and while it started a generation of films that would become unbearable, I would have easily taken all of these hack jobs for the scream films. I find one and two awesome and 3 is pretty good.

39. Leon- The Professional- 1994

Image

People may call Luc Besson a hack now, but he used to make some pretty solid films, La Femme Nakita and the Fifth Element were very solid. But this is his masterpiece. Hard gripping action, the introduction a completely badass character of Leon, and Natalie Portman in her first film is very very great. Gary Oldman, needless to say is the best at playing the villian, and this might very well be one of his best. The chemistry between Jean Reno and Portman are great, and is the best of the Man helps girl theme that Besson often explores. Their relationship is beautiful and potent when it comes to an end. The demise of the both the villian and the hero is not only brutal and sad, but also awesome in the same way. Classic film.

Not what I meant.

You misspelled Aragorn as Eragon. Perhaps it wouldn't be as bad if there wasn't a terrible fantasy novel + movie entitled Eragon.

38. Young Frankenstein- 1974

Image

The best Horror comedy ever made, and one of the funniest films ever made. Mel Brooks was on top of his game in 1974, with this and Blazing Saddles, but BS has dated a little over the years while Young Frankenstein is just as good today. The ever great Gene Wilder adds to his roles of great characters. Marty Feldman is the quintessential EYEgor. Terri Garr is gorgeous as Inga, and Madeline Kahn is as good as ever. Gene Hackman is hysterical as the hermit in his brief cameo. The jokes are hysterical and everything is top notch. Puttin on the Ritz was never sung better.

37. The Matrix- 1999

Image

It's one of those stories, where you loved the first, and hated the sequels. A film that didn't need one at all. The film is simple and takes the basic plot from that story that LOTR and SW also follow, young guy goes into a new world with the help of an old or wise person. The story was brilliant and blew my mind when I first saw it. As did the superb action and special effects. Every actor is top notch, even Keanu, shame on Will Smith, it would have been interesting with him as Neo. It's just an awesome film that won't be duplicated, and did I mention the Sequels SUCKED.

36. Halloween- 1978

Image

The best straight forward horror film ever made. It's complete simple and it was never better. Messed up guy escapes from mental institution and stalks babysitter, Dr. on his trail. John Carpenter's first theatrical film was absolutely unmatchable. The acting though the catalyst of all those stereotypes is strangely still quite believable. the menace of Michael Meyers is absolutely frightening as he slowly stalks his victim with an uneasiness and calm. The movie is great, but what makes it the most is the scoring of the film that could have taken a well told movie, and turned it into a masterpiece. 7 sequels followed ranging from good to bad, and a remake this summer. I hope Zombie doesn't show him that much, it's one of the great things that Meyers hasn't gotten back since the first sequel.

35. Reservoir Dogs- 1992

Image

When one thinks of Feature film debut's none can really match Quentin Tarantino's hard hitting caper gone wrong flick of 1992. Reservoir dogs is filled with great references, awesome dialogue and some really bad ass motherfuckers. Mr. Blone aka Vic Vega is an insane son of a bitch and his torture scene of the cop goes down as one of the most bizarre, brutal, and hysterical scenes ever made. The story is told in such an intricate way that as the twists turn that while all these guys are terrible, they're all awesome. Shame they never showed the bank robbery. This is one film that could have as many scenes as possible.

34. Silence of the Lambs- 1991

Image

Theres not much about this film that can't be said. It's not horror films that scare me, it's thrillers that behave realistically that can fuck with you the most. This is one of them. Superbly written, superbly acted, scary, and exhilarating from start to finish. Anthony Hopkins turned a minor character into one of the best characters of all time. He is calm and intelligent, and if you met him at party without knowing his background, he might seem normal. But see him behind bars and he is the most chilling man of all time. He's not even the villian and your terrified of him. Buffalo Bill by Ted Levine is nothing short of disturbing in his own right. Really when I think of films that scare me, this one tops the list

33. The Game- 1997

Image

Easily David Fincher's most underrated work and one of the best thrillers of all time. The Game is a awesomely written, acted and directed. Michael Douglass continued his very interesting 1990s with this great performance. The scenarios he's thrown into are just crazy. It keeps you guessing until the end. PS. Everyone know that there is a real life "Game" that the movie is based on, but its more of a scavenger hunt and keys, with a few actors, not this extreme.
