WOM shouldn't be judged by how much this drops next weekend. This movie is likely to break or get close to the OW record. It is naturally frontloaded.

You know, I have to agree. I wouldn't say that the word-of-mouth is exactly good enough to prevent it from somewhat heavy drops, but it's not toxic like some make it out to be. It did receive applause from my theater, at least.

If it drops 65% or more, cleary WOM is part of the reason.

Had Spider-man 2 come out on a Friday it would have likely had a 125 million opening weekend. That would mean almost a 64% drop the following weekend and SM2 clearly didn't have bad WOM.

We will never know what it's second weekend drop would have been if it opened on a FRI. You can't look at it's second weekend, and compare it to a possible FRI-SUN number it never got. Opening on WED ruins any guesses at a second weekend drop.
And it likely would not have dropped that hard if it did get 125 from opening on a FRI. Id say more of a 55% drop.

It's super frontloaded, I bet, but considering that there is no major competition next weekend, it has no reason to fall more than 65%. So, yeah, if it did, bad WOM.

That's true we would never know. Good points.
But I can't see this dropping 70% or something extreme, not with a completely open second weekend.

I dont think it will either. Im basically saying if it sees a 65+ drop, clearly WOM played a role in that, especially given lack of comp next weekend.

It got a bad response when I saw it, so...
When a girl stands up at the end of a movie and says "that was fucking horrible, I can't believe I stood in line for that" and people laugh and clap to that, I don't think that indicates good WOM. But we'll see.

1. The movie rocked. Best of the series, Third best superhero movie ever and had harry lives woulda been second best.
Stop Pretending
2. Ok, I had only seen a an audience clap for a film ONCE aside from a huge reaction to ID4 and THE LONGEST YARD. It was BATMAN BEGINS first friday and it was in a sold out, 8:30 showing at the main theater my bro works out. The audience clapped at the end of that. Today when is aw spidey 3, ina sold out 400 seater...they clapped 4. SEPARATE. TIMES
Now you're just plain Lying
1st time-all of bruce campbell. Awesome Scene 2nd-harry catches the bomb, throws it back at harry osborn at osborn manor Ridiculous...Harry should have died 3rd-when mj says ot peter at the bar "what is wrong with you" Boo hoo...too sappy 4th-end of movie Was nothing special
seriously, i do not know what you guys are talking about, but for the 30 and under corwd word of mouth is literally through the roof. i went with my fiance, a guy friend of mine and his girlfriend to a 7:15 showing, and the audience totally ate this up. Ok
More pretending. "wom is literally through the roof." I find this lacking truthfulness.
I KNOW THIS ISNT SPIDEY 2! And thank god! I hated it! Spidey 2 was a borefest with one decent action scene. This goes back to Spidey 1 mode and has 1 quick little clever scenes to make us feel for the characters. I couldnt believe so many hated it! Dunst sang fine, Maguire was fantastic too. His peter Parker was very likeable and sympathetic yet his so emo peter was so easy to hate. when he hit mj, literally half the theater went "HUH!" and gasped, and several peopel went oh my god!its very effective partially due to Mj is very likeable. FRANCO owns here, as does Jk Simmons. Gwen Stacys ok I guess.
Nuff Said, "Franco Owns Here" Now you show your true colors!
But walking out of the theater-wow! there was a large group of teenagers we sat infront of who i heard behind us sayinhg how sick they thought it was. a qoute' "dude that was sick"-"kid that was phenomical" and "that fuckin rocked", aside from the grand applause the film got at the end.
Only the most weak minded teens would fall for this.
sorry, haters. NO WAY This films multiplier is under 2.5. The word of mouth is a little under spidey 1.
Wom is nowhere near spidey and neither are the reviews which tell the true story. Just passing 300 million is it's fate.
Btw did BKB force you to start this thread?

It wasn't perfect, but people have seriously used the term "well-liked" about fucking Rush Hour 2 and National Treasure, so I don't know why Raimi is being talked about like he shot Triumph of the Will starring Larry the Cable Guy.
By the way, I think the thing with Bryan Singer was, he wanted to make a movie as different from the X-Men films as possible, because he was working in the same (sub!)genre, but he probably didn't want to get typecast, so he tried to go in as different a direction as possible--unfortunately that direction was from entertaining people.
I think he should try his hand at a different one, so he won't be so self concious, and people would be more interested in his personal stamp. I think he'd be good for a western. He knows how to give us a Clint Eastwood type. Because it would be period as opposed to a comic book, people wouldn't mind his scenes of people standing around talking. And the best action scenes in his X-Men movies often involved giunplay and/or practical effects.

I don't know what to make of WOM anymore. I can't trust anything said here; everybody who supports the movie always claims they saw/heard great reactions, and anybody who didn't like the movie does the opposite. It's fucking ridiculous. So I have to rely on the cross-section of my friends who have seen it, and it truly is mixed. One of them didn't like it at all, a couple thought it was decent, and a bit more than that felt it was great (I didn't ask how they compare it to Spider-man 2 - I was too busy concentrating on Guitar Hero at that point in the party). I'm not sure what to make of everything now. I'll wait until school Monday when I can ask more people.

Well It least I console myself with the fact that the showing I saw it at had all of 20 people in the cinema. As for WOM thats such a black art its impossible to predict with any degree of accuracy, especially for big movies like this.

After seeing it last night at a nearly packed theater, the film got a great reaction up until after the scene with Bruce Campbell and didn't get a good reaction again up until the very end. So, I guess that qualifies as mixed WOM.

The go see it by yourself than and screw what your friends say.. The movie really was damn good but you all just had TOO high of expectations.. I've said, this movie will stand the test of time, even throughout the summer, this is going to hang around for a while..

Well good for her.. She made an ass out of herself and did so at everyone elses expense.. Nice she could guage a reaction to her lame remark that was strictly for reaction and to be cool and hip now wasn't it?? This is just getting beyond stupid and highly HIGHLY overexagerrated with all this so called hate.. What's the excuse gonna be when this movie rounds out close to 400 Million domestically???

The WOM has been decent to good. I have only a few friends on RT who really disliked it, but everyone else have given it 7 - 9's. The theatre actually did applaud it at the end and when exiting good responses came out. Laughs at the right parts, cherring when certain one's die. And so far my friends who have seen it enjoyed it. I dont know what theatre you go to were people stand up like that and swear, even at like truly horribe movies I never heard that. Hell DVC got a decent response last summer, so did DMC..

I don't like Spider-Man 3 much..
but I agree with you, WOM amongst the general audince (at last, a group that I was with) is decent..
I've also checked on Thai's biggest movie forum ( http://www.pantip.com), it seems like over 70% like this movie..

Cinemascore will give us a good picture of what the exit polls are saying.
But the movie had stayed steady at a B and one exit poll has said that 50% say they liked SM3 more than SM1 and SM2.
