Since 1997, I believe. But, I don't think that means much. Look at the openings for all the Batman movies.
Batman: $40,489,746
Batman Returns: $45,687,711
Batman Forever: $52,784,433
Batman & Robin: $42,872,606
All movies raked in above $40 million. It's hard to believe that Batman Begins, being released in a time where attendance at movie theaters is higher than the 90's, will score lower than $40 million. There are hardcore Batman fans out there, and this can easily do $40 million. I mean, Terminator 2 came out in 1991, and Terminator 3 came out in 2003, but did that do bad? No.

I'll stop predicting movies forever if The Ring Two doesn't make $40 million. That's an easy landmark, considering The Grudge did it.

Emmm....JU ON was made about 7 years ago....you can't include that with GRUDGE and RING (2002). Because no one went to see it when it was in limited release last year.
THE RING made $129,000,000
THE GRUDGE made $110,000,000
THE RING TWO is going to make $100,000,000+
So yeah, the majority obviously love japanese horror.
This will be proven when THE RING TWO opens over $40M.

In conclusion, I do not see XXX making 40 mil xXx was a huge hit on DVD even if it wasn't quite as successful as TFATF (which was fifth in 2001 I believe). It's going to be so frontloaded, that it would only need about 90m, or less, in total to open with 40m. You don't think it has that much in it?

I'd go as far as saying that Fantastic Four is a lock, simply because this summer doesn't look exciting at all and there 'bound to be more $40+ million openers than we suppose and Fantastic Four seems like a perfect choice. It's lighthearted, summer fun. I mean it's one of Marvel's "biggies". Look at their previous biggies:
Daredevil opened to $40+ million in February
The Hulk opened to $62 million
X-Men opened to $54 million back in 2000
X2 opened to ~$85 million
I don't even need to mention Spider-Man and its sequel.
I don't see why F4 should do any worse than at least Daredevil that managed a $40 million opening in February.
