American History X

American History is probably one of the best race-related films ever. What is scary about X, is that the film puts you in the shoes of the racists, the bigots, the ones you are supposed to be disgusted over... and yet you aren't. Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors, and this is without a doubt, his best performance. As the Skinhead, you know what he is saying is wrong, but you almost end up siding with him anyways, he is that powerful in the role. I do think X is the best race-related film ever, but in reality I consider the film more about the characters themselves and their transformations, it is subtle but effective in its message. The curb stomping scene is one of the most shocking and brutal scenes ever put on film, and a few other moments in the film aren't very far behind. A movie that everyone, movie fan or not, should see.

The Terminator

What an ingenious idea for a sci-fi plot. I don't know whether it was Cameron or another writer who came up with it, but the entire storyline for this film, the idea of a killing machine from the future being sent back modern day to kill the mother of the leader of the human revolution, is amazing. The film itself stands as one of the best sci-fi films ever, as it is. Arnold as the title character is not only his definitive role, but is one of the definitive and obviously most quotable characters in movie history. He was made for this role, and he nails it. The character of Reese being so strong also just adds to the movie, I thought the romance between Sarah Conner and him worked very well, and the actor who plays him is very charasmatic and likable... you bought he was sent from the future. One of sci-fi's most original and wonderful outings.

If anyone is interested I can post my list after Magnus' and Excel's. It even has some movies made before the year 2000.  , so there will be some variety from the usual lists.

I don't even think I could come up with a top 100 list and I've seen plenty myself. This is quite a task. I wonder where a film like Shawshank redemption will rank. Top 50 probably or higher.

I'll bank on Shawshank creeping into the top 10 based on Shacks review of it.

Freddy vs Jason

Freddy vs Jason is a camp and pop culture wet dream. The two most infamous horror villains ever, going against each other, with as much fun killing and gore as possible. Freddy vs Jason is not really a horror film, it isn't in any way trying to create scares or anything close to it, rather it knows well enough that this movie is not to be taken seriously, it is just a blast of a film to watch. Acting and writing is bad, but honestly, who cares when it comes to this film? A popcorn fun extravaganza that never gets old. You couldn't ask for more out of a Freddy vs Jason film. Entertainment at its finest.

Clue

One of the most unfortunatley underseen movies ever. Clue is a classic in zaniness, as well as being one of the most quotable films ever. Who would've thought that a film based on a board game could be so perfect? The humor and dialogue in the film is just insanly fast and off the wall, the screenplay is perfect, and Tim Curry as the butler is magnificent. The movie just never stops. Clue is a film that if you see it in a store, you'll probably have no idea what it is, and might rent it because it has the same name as the board game... After you watch it, you'll treasure the experience. Magnificence. Now I need to watch it again.

Grease

While in terms of depth, acting, writing, etc., there are stronger musicals than Grease, I don't know if there are many that have catchier and more fun songs. Grease, Summer Nights, Sandy, You're the One That I Want, and so on, there's a plenty of songs that will never leave my head. Movie is intentially cheesy, and it works... I see it perfectly at the same time tributing and mocking the tough guy lifestyle of the 50s. Grease is a musical that doesn't work in an epic scale, it is simply a couple kids in high school. Travolta, a super hot Newton-John, and the rest of the gang are all insanly charasmatic and likable, Grease is a film that you know is cheesy and over the top, but you can't help but love it every time you see it. A classic.

Forrest Gump

Life is like a box of chocolates. Forrest Gump is a film that doesn't need much explanation or introducing, as one of the most succesful films in box-office and awards of the 90s, it's a film that is hard not to love. The movie quite simply, despite having the nifty visual tricks, is so full of heart that it nearly explodes. Tom Hanks gives one of his best performances ever as the lead, as the not-so-bright man who accomplished much in his life, proving you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan and Robin Wright Penn as Jenny are what make this movie truly great for me though, both characters I found myself loving and cheering for throughout the movie, and overall the authenticity and emotional tugging of the film is something that few others can muster up to. One of the numerous great films of 1994, and of the 90s in general.

Goldeneye

Ah, the beauty and tragedy of Pierce Brosnan's Bond career. For one thing, he's has the perfect look and demeanour for the character, he is a great choice for the role. However, how great as he is, what eventually crippled him is that his movies ended up largely in the bin of over the top blow-em-up and explosion action films, with everything away from him weak. But alas, as shitty as The World is Not Enough or Die Another Day ended up being, Goldeneye is just a great great piece of Bond. Obviously Pierce delivers, but away from that, everything from the villain that is his friend, the general, Zena(?), the girl, and the overall plotline, is practically awesome. I am not a fan of blow em up action, but this works more than any other film of the type. Goldeneye is not only a great Bond film, but one of the best action films ever as well. Aiding it also is the fact that the game is one of my favorite of all time, and I thank the movie for helping create that.

That's for not knowing what Clue is.

:nonono:

That's for saying 'meh' to Gump.

This cruel world has jaded me immune to the Gump

Midnight Express

For the most part, when a jail film is made, the majority of the time the storyline focus is on escaping from that jail. The determination of the inmate, his witty plan, how he goes through with it. Midnight Express isn't about an escape plot. Rather, it is a haunting and intensly searing picture showing the experience of this man while in the Turkish jail, and how he gradually unfolds into insanity over the years. There are some that call out the film being unfair to the Turks, but honestly, I don't really care about that. What I do care about, is the fact that in Express, Parker unweaves a story and an experience near masterfully. The way Billy does make it out of jail, without revealing it here, is the perfect brutal and stripped down anti-statement to the typical jail escape plot. It would be hard to make a more haunting prison film.

Casablanca

Thanks to limited resources, the 'classic' breed is a genre I still have to visit much more than I have. While I haven't been completley impressed by a few of the ones I have, Casablanca stands a pretty darn great movie, even if it's not one of the best ever. Curtiz has in the film created a number of very believable and humanistic characters, he shows more than a lot of depth with his characters and people. It is simple things in the movie like expressions on character's faces and the way the setting and world moves behind the scenes, that make it great. Bogart is excellent, showing a multi-layered character that feels somewhat real, Bergman is as beautiful as a movie star can be, Rains is superb as the Captain. Without a doubt the screenplay shines in all its fame and quotability, and the last 20 minutes of the film are pretty much astounding. The walkaway at the end stands as one of film's best endings. I need to see this again, it may rise on another viewing, but anyways... a cinematic piece of history.

I'd pay money for Shack to have Lawrence of Arabia at Number 1, just to see Magnus go crazy.

I really wish Shack would have LOA as number 1 now, one of my favorite posts on any website ever is after DIB had it in his list, sadly that post has since been deleted.

Back to the Future

Often, a creative sci-fi idea lives and dies on its concept. Back to the Future proves this point immensely. The storyline of travelling back in time decades, to warn a dead friend about the day he dies, and all the stuff that Fox's character runs into in this movie, is incredibly original. Micheal J. Fox and especially Christopher Llyod do excellent work as the leads, and I just love the setting and past that Zemeckis creates in here. The lightning and clocktower idea is also very smart, with the ending being just dynamite. Overall Back to the Future is absolutely one of the most fun and entertaining sci-fi films ever, and a defining piece of 80s cinema.

I can't believe I'm only at #65 and getting into these films that I regard so highly, there's a lot more films that I really love than I thought there was. I feel like I'm undercutting nearly all these movies.
