It's funny Jeff that you and I sort of have the same rationale about Dreamgirls. I think I love it because of what it means to the genre. As long as well made successful musicals continue, the genre will stay alive.

Just think 10 years ago, it was completely dead.

I can recognize it as a well made film. It had problems...but lets face it, what film this year didn't have problems?

United 93

Besides being pointless and as deep as a puddle. It's a paint by numbers hollow experimental film. I could go on.

I admit, the dialogues should have been sung.

At the moment

10. Pan's Labyrinth
9. Talladega Nights
8. Borat
7. An Inconvenient Truth
6. The Devil Wears Prada
5. Little Miss Sunshine
4. Rocky Balboa
3. Casino Royale

A lot of oscar pictures I saw (The Departed, Babel, Volver) lacked a lot in my mind.

I'd have The Descent at number 2 but I saw it last year. I have a suspision Last King of Scotland will be in my top 10 when I finally get to see it.

Still have to see Iwo Jima.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
2. Children of Men
3. The Departed
4. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
5. Casino Royale
6. Dreamgirls
7. Clerks II
8. The Good Shepherd
9. Blood Diamond
10. The Last King of Scotland

Still need to see Half Nelson, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Children, Notes on a Scandal (most likely seeing it or Little Children tomorrow), The Painted Veil, and Pan's Labyrinth. I also need another viewing of Children of Men to decide if I'm gonna give it #1 (which I probably will).

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 #1 of the year?

...Really? Hmmmmm.

I don't understand why I didn't like that more, considering how the first one is one of my favorites ever.

The first one is an all-time favorite for me as well (#4). I'm most likely the only person around to have it at #1, but I really loved it (enough to have seen it 4x in theaters within its first 11 days of release). Johnny Depp was excellent again, I loved the Davey Jones character, and I was a big fan of the cliffhanger ending. It definitely doesn't come near the first, but I still thought it was a great and extremely fun film.

But like I said....CoM is probably going to take #1 after a second viewing. I have a feeling that I'll love The Painted Veil a lot too.

4. Casino Royale
5. A Prairie Home Companion
6. Little Miss Sunshine
7. Akeelah and the Bee
8. Monster House
9. Dreamgirls
10. Jackass: Number Two

Number eleven would be MIAMI VICE. Twelve? Apocalypto or Inside Man.

This whole list will be changed. I still have to see Children of Men, Venus, Notes on a Scandal, Letters from Iwo Jima, Pan's Labyrinth, Painted Veil, Little Children. And some small pictures like Tristam Shandy or The Proposition. Volver, too, although I've found Almodovar unbearable as of late.

Can they save 2006?

You've got most of the best in your list, from what I gather.

Saving grace? Maybe not.

I'm glad to see Prairie Home get some attention. I loved it on first viewing, wasn't able to finish it a second time so I left it off my list for now.

It is on my list.

If I ever watch the Blockbuster Online movies I have I'll take them back and trade them in and get it.

It's probably the movie with the weirdest structure of 2006.

It's a bit like Adaptation.

It's completely and totally keeping in spirit of the book, but it has very little to do with what's actually in the book.

It's an odd little gem.

I'm presumably seeing Children of Men, so there's a strong possibility it will knock Cars off this list.

I also still haven't seen Half Nelson, The Queen, Volver and The Last King of Scotland, among others.

Only The Queen that may change your list.. (ok, and Half Nelson too)

But if there's only one film that will change your list, it'll be Pan's Labyrinth.. do not miss it!

other possibilities; Painted Veil, Letters from Iwo Jima

Before i post mine, i got to say, i feel way out of place. I live in a small town with a two screen theater and the owner (devote christian) chooses all the movies that come into our town. I get to see some of the bigger movies by traveling 2 hours to a big city, but that is only a few times a year. So all in all i am saying, i haven't been able to see all the ones you guys have been able to. I wish i could, but from what i have seen, here is my list.

1. The Departed
2. Snakes on a Plane
3. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
4. Hard Candy
5. The Pink Panther
6. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
7. Thank You for Smoking
8. Dreamgirls
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
10. Tie: The Last Kiss/V for Vendetta

This year seemed to have some really good comedies i thought. Most people hated Pink Panther, but i loved its hilarious stupidity. Ones that could have possibly made the list that i am dying to see are: Children of Men, Blood Diamond, Prusuit of Happyness, Pans Labyrinth, The Queen, Babel, Half Nelson, and so many others.....
Next year i am going to college in a big city, so this is my last year of compiling a incomplete top ten list! YAY!

Don't feel embarassed Ron, what you like is what you like. Snakes on a Plane was delicious fun.

Despite what Artur says I'm going to add back in Mountain Patrol!

01 United 93
02 Children of Men
03 Little Children
04 Dreamgirls
05 Casino Royale
06 Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
07 Kekexili
08 The Queen
09 Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story
10 The Departed

...is my "list" for today I guess. Always flowing, always changing. I suspect that The Departed could potentially be bumped by the films I have not seen, esp. Volver, Pan's Lab or Iwo Jima.

There is totally a difference between posting Best and Favorite lists. Like, I pray that Letters from IWO Jima isn't Raffiki's favorite film. Unless he's super super weird, I hope Raffiki doesn't look "forward" to watching Letters from IWO Jima, and, when with friends, asks "Do y'all wanna watch LFIWOJ?" Haha.

But, he sees something in it that's fascinating.

I'm not for people whoring up to critics, and pretending to like films that everyone else does (*cough* Children of Men *cough* The New World *cough*), but there's a distinction between Best and Favorite that should be clarified when asking for "Top" 10 Lists.

Chances are, though, that if a film is a "favorite," and it's not a guilty pleasure, it'll be in your "best of" list...

I've seen like six movies or so since September, so I'm definitely not ready to post the list...

But I don't think anything will top The Departed and Borat for me.

See, I disagree with that.

If you're separating it out into "best" and "favorite," what's the distinction between the two? It seems as though "favorite" has become synonymous with that which best engages emotions (whether it be crying or laughing) and "best" with that which is most skillfully directed, acted, etc.

To me, if a film has terrific performances but fails to engage me emotionally, it's not successful. If a film with weaker acting, though, engages me, it gets the positive review despite its technical shortcomings. I may admire film A, but I like film B, and I'm just not okay with putting skillfully done films over those that actually pull me in.
