Yeah, The Queen was somehow very entertaining despite its premise, and it is a well made film, Frears creates the monarchy setting well. And yeah, Mirren rocks. Ray, Capote, and it all impressed me beyond just the performance, I have them on similar grounds. The Queen is sitting at about #16 on my yearly list, solid A-. Think it would normally higher even as well, but this was a good year for me, I actually had 11 As.

My top 10
1) The Departed
2) Rocky Balboa
3) Blood Diamond
4) Little Miss Sunshine
5) The Illusionist
6) Click
7) Borat
8) The Devil Wears Prada
9) The DaVinci Code
10) Bobby
Note: I have not seen a lot of the so called contenders...no Iwo, Flight 93, Queen, Children of Men, Dreamgirls and Flags. I'll get around to it, but my top 5 are pretty solid and will probably remain there.

Raffiki wrote: Oh Jeff.... The Holiday? Imagine Me and You? Dreamgirls? I strongly disagree on those choices. Departed, LMS, Fountain, and Thank you for Smoking are good choices. I'm indifferent to Borat and haven't seen Inside Man and Children of Men yet (will have seen both in 2 weeks time). I thought The Queen was one of the most superb films this year. It didn't play out like a documentary at all. As opposed to what many think or have said, I found both the lead performance AND the movie quite engaging.
Heh. It is a personal list Raffi, keep that in mind. As for choices...I decided on a Top 10, instead of a Top 7 which would have removed those, but I'm considering going back and changing that...
I loved The Holiday though, and Imagine Me and You was a great twist on the rom-com genre ... or so I thought anyway.

Just think 10 years ago, it was completely dead.
so were Pirate movies. Why isn't Dead Men's Chest in your top 10?

I can recognize it as a well made film. It had problems...but lets face it, what film this year didn't have problems?

I originally had DMC as an honorary mention...but dropped it as I just wanted one in that catergory.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
2. Children of Men
3. The Departed
4. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
5. Casino Royale
6. Dreamgirls
7. Clerks II

10. The Last King of Scotland
Still need to see Half Nelson, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Children, Notes on a Scandal (most likely seeing it or Little Children tomorrow), The Painted Veil, and Pan's Labyrinth. I also need another viewing of Children of Men to decide if I'm gonna give it #1 (which I probably will).

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 #1 of the year?
...Really? Hmmmmm.
I don't understand why I didn't like that more, considering how the first one is one of my favorites ever.

The first one is an all-time favorite for me as well (#4). I'm most likely the only person around to have it at #1, but I really loved it (enough to have seen it 4x in theaters within its first 11 days of release). Johnny Depp was excellent again, I loved the Davey Jones character, and I was a big fan of the cliffhanger ending. It definitely doesn't come near the first, but I still thought it was a great and extremely fun film.
But like I said....CoM is probably going to take #1 after a second viewing. I have a feeling that I'll love The Painted Veil a lot too.

1. The Departed
2. The Queen
3. The Prestige
4. Casino Royale
5. A Prairie Home Companion
6. Little Miss Sunshine
7. Akeelah and the Bee
8. Monster House
9. Dreamgirls
10. Jackass: Number Two
Number eleven would be MIAMI VICE. Twelve? Apocalypto or Inside Man.
This whole list will be changed. I still have to see Children of Men, Venus, Notes on a Scandal, Letters from Iwo Jima, Pan's Labyrinth, Painted Veil, Little Children. And some small pictures like Tristam Shandy or The Proposition. Volver, too, although I've found Almodovar unbearable as of late.
Can they save 2006?

You've got most of the best in your list, from what I gather.
Saving grace? Maybe not.

I'm glad to see Prairie Home get some attention. I loved it on first viewing, wasn't able to finish it a second time so I left it off my list for now.
