Oh... thought it was like a few weeks ago and I just didn't know.

Sad to see him go

Guess they gave him the honorary Oscar just in time though.

On a different note, The History Boy is only getting ok reviews, as early buzz suggested: 61% and 6.4 average at RT, with COTC rotten at 57% and 6.2 average; it fares a little better at MC with a score of 70, but none higher than 80 yet. Haven't read all the reviews in details, but Richard Griffiths did get some praises; didn't see much mention of Frances de la Tour.

I'd hate to see Altman nominated (and in fact, would be kind of mad) for APHC when that means that a few other extremely talented directors (Iñárritu, Greengrass, etc.) would be snubbed.

Hmph.

I like Prairie Home Companion. I like it a lot, actually.

But it just... doesn't really deserve something like a Best Director nomination.

Well, he gave The Passion of the Christ 3 stars I think, so I'm not that surprised

I think it'll get a reaction somewhere between Passion and Braveheart... high 60's/low 70's is my personal guess

I could see it going as high as low to mid 80s, and I still don't think it'd have a chance at any nominations, maybe a technical or two at best.

The WB is trying to campaign Leo as Supporting for The Departed (And Lead for Blood Diamond) while the Globes are putting him in lead, ala Maria Bello in A History of Violence (Snubbed) and Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago (Not-so-snubbed).

What a beautiful mess we have here.

And to throw a wrench into Mav's "lock," Diane Lane is apparently being campaigned for lead at the oscars, which the Globes just screwed up by putting her in supporting.

Wtf is with all this false campaigning, I mean what happened to supporting nominations coming for supporting roles, and lead noms for lead? Abigail Breslin and Diane Lane aren't even close to lead in their films, what the hell is this?

Only GG deemed her as a lead so far. She should still safely be supporting for Oscar.

That's like... suicide.

Leo was so good in Departed, that now I'm curious to see just how good Blood Diamond is... because obviously they think it's a better performance.

Abigail Breslin for Lead???? Makes no sense.

Whatever helps kill The Departed chances at BP, works for me.

If WB wimps out, there's nothing to stop Dreamgirls from winning BP at this point unless the audience completely and totally shuns it, which is doubtful.

I know WB had no idea The Departed would be a contender, but with it's enormous popularity and amazing reviews I don't see why they still seem to be doubting it's chances. I'm curious about The Blood Diamond too, but how could Leo be so much better in it? Because he nails the accent. I mean, this is Ed Zwick we're talking about. Zwick vs. Scorsese, who gets the better performance out of their actors?

Glowing endorsement for Letters from Iwo Jima, posted at AICN.

From the AICN thing:

Quote:
But Clint does decide to show us the horrifying scene where Japanese soldiers, one by one, voluntarily blow themselves up using hand grenades. We also see what happens to the American soldiers who are unfortunate enough to be pulled down and kidnapped through the hundreds of underground passages.

That's good... I was worried it would be too soft about the Japanese as there seems to be somewhat of a guilt complex in the West regarding the use of the bomb and the general bombing runs. The Japanese were very cruel invaders, just as cruel as the Nazis. My friend who is Malaysian has a family with tons of stories about just how horrible the occupying forces were.

Looking forward to this one, it remains in the race, but I have no idea where at this point.

I'd love to see Ken Watanabe with a best actor nod.

Man, I would love Letters to really hit and shake things up. Like MDB did. As long as it doesn't take Marty's Oscar.

Personally, though, I don't think it'll have any real impact.

It's 2002 all over again... maybe with Scorsese finally taking his Oscar (I'm still not entirely convinced), but still...
