Well, we must remember that this IS the *unofficial* Tomatometer. Most people are going to be going to the front page for Tomatometer readings, so we'll have to wait and see once more official reviews are added.
And I say this only because I made the same argument with SR. I am definitely excited about the 100% on the unofficial TM... Especially since they're not fanboy/girl reviews from PotC-specific sites; that was the problem with the unofficial TM for SR (fanboy reviews from comic-specific sites)...

I'm reallyyyyyy getting excited for this one, the reviews are just pushing the anticipation over the all time edge. Of course the reviews are saying it's a bit too long and what not, but that's what they said for the first as well! The fact that this is looking like more fun than the first one, is just amazing. Can't. Freaking. Wait.

because Superman did not control the boxoffice as some expected it to, Pirates has a strong chance at a 100 million opening.

Eh, people throw that around all the time, and it never happens. (Thanks to lots of movies not opening on friday) Im still skeptical that this, or any movie until maybe Spiderman 3, will break the record.

If the sun explodes tomorrow we will also all be quite disappointed.
Should we stop with the expectation that the sun will rise uneventfully?
But let me put it this way: if the sun does explode I would seriously begin to doubt my POTC 2 prediction. In part because it would mean anything is possible, even POTC 2 not beating the record, and in part because we would all be vaporized.

All signs are pointing to one movie being huge this summer. SR, MI3, DVC and X2 are all fair sized hits, but monstrous. Will Pirates be that film? Or is this the year that nothing really explodes?

Pirates will be huge. It will open huge. The film covers pretty much all demographics and early reviews have said this film is just as a fun as the first, in general. That's what the audience wants, and with huge buzz from the first film, families will go in droves to see this one. No offense, but I cannot believe there are still people ignoring the buzz, the tracking (which is like nothing I've ever seen), etc. This will be huge. I've never been so sure of myself on a big blockbuster than now.
PEACE, Mike.

140m for the weekend is a lock now I'd say. The only question now is whether it pulls in Shrek 2 numbers, is the movie of the decade, or makes a run at Titanic. With a weekend over 180m it has a chance.

Come on man, you can't honeslty believe that. This film will be big, no doubt. But I'd say it is a lock for 300, but a run at 4-5 or even 600 mill? No way.

Not that I think the film will eclipse $500 million (I don't right now, as huge as I think it will be), but boy would I love to see that happen to shut the naysayers up completely. Heh.
PEACE, Mike.

Since it has never happened before, I think saying a 140 million opening weekend being a lock is a bit overzealous.

I'd disagree. OW records have been broken by huge margins many times. ROTJ, Batman, The Lost World, Harry Potter, Spider-Man. So, the recorld will likely go down in the same way again.

I'm not necessarily a naysayer Mike, but I think there are too many variables that go into making a film huge. Yous imply cannot predict films that do that kind of business. That's why there have been so few of them. Was Titanic, Shrek 2 or even a film like ROTK expected to do that much? Predicting unabashedly that said film will do more than 400 is dangerous. 300 mill is likely...but more than that? GRAVY!!
