Unless it has a strong Friday increase due to low awareness of the release date (which I somewhat doubt), you guys will be right. Congrats.

With its Friday gross and Pirates ahead, I see a total of $190 million now...

Jurassic Park 3 and MIB 2 were both just about 10% lower. That however was 4-5 years ago when movies were much less frontloaded. Plus, they didn't have 10 pm showings to inflate opening day. I don't think it will beat those movies, and with more frontloading it can go as low as 160m. In fact, Over the Hedge can beat it for 5th of the summer.
Another comparision: just under 55% of SM2's opening. The same multiplier gives it just under 200m, but I doubt even that as SM2 might have been frontloaded, but still held pretty well.
So, if not for a big Friday increase 190m is optimistic, 175m is likely, and 160m is at the low end.

I'm not sure WOM is mixed; I'm pretty sure it's strong. But, still not near BB, so it won't save it.

I don't think it is strong. Go to imdb and read the reviews. Mixed at best.

I agree. In any case, IMDB skews towards the internet audience you have on boards like this, so it's not reliable.

That is utter bullshit. Read the reviews past the first page when you get to the real reviews that are stuido plants. They are mixed...my review is a perfect example of how people feel.

I'm not saying my review is an example of how people feel, but don't act like because you didn't like it that everyone feels the same way about you, and also never use IMDB as a source of judging WOM for a film. The only internet site that is somewhat reliable for WOM is yahoo, but even that isn't that accurate.
I'm saying my review is more " typical" of the reviews on the site. There is more apathy towards the film. Not a lot of hate and not a lot of love, just ambivalence, and that ain't good.

At this point anything can happen. If WOTW can make over $230m with a similar opening on a similar date with mixed WOM, $200m is definitely in the realm of possibility for Superman. Of course it can also go the other route and not even pass $170m, but to already proclaim doom and gloom is just you wishing it not reaching $200m...

It will head towards $200m - so it can fall up to $10m short ot go $10m above. Its still close - just depends on POTC2's effect!

It's pretty close to how I felt with the exception of Routh being cast for this..

Yes, I do trust IMDB, or Fandango, or Moviefone, or Yahoo, or even Ronnie's parking lot, as an indicator of WOM. WOM is how the general public feels, and these are all closer to the general public than, say, hoity-toity reviewers on RT (with the exception of Ebert.) WOM and quality do not necessarily match.
I agree with excel that it's too close for the Under 200M to claim victory. But I do think $250 is out. I will stick with my "under $200m, but eat crow at $230M" projection.

While only three people I know have seen the film, their reactions were VERY similar:
1) Well shot, some great effects. Script is mediocre.
2) WAY too long. Could easilly have been 30 minutes shorter
3) Spider-Man looks awesome
Since all of those complaints seem to mirror what I'm reading online over and over - I'm thinking there's a trend here.
I should note that none of those screenings were in IMAX, which seems to be the only way to see the film.

It may still inch past 200 million, but I'll consider it a victory none-the-less.
