BKB: Exactly. Who cares about plot holes? Frodo could've hitched an eagle ride to Mt Doom, and Harry could've married Sally ten minutes into the film, but I liked them all the same.
Of course he was, that was the whole point. If you come near the mutant kid, your powers cease. They strategically waited there, and then when he passed the kid he hit the wall without his powers. I thought that was pretty clear.
I really have to re-watch the first two X-Men films. The first I saw well enough in theatres, but it was so long ago. And X2 I merely caught on television one day, so I didn't adequately pay attention to it. I need to see them again to get more of a grasp on the whole X-Men world. I think I might appreciate this film more knowing more of the history behind it.
Anyways, I'm thinking I enjoyed the film, however it had SO much more potential. I'll start with the negative.
Did anyone else notice how this film had a LOT of hokey, sometimes cringe-worthy, dialogue? I'm not talking about just the Juggarnaut line, but even one by Magneto, a line even the great Ian McKellen with his Shakespearean voice couldn't overcome without it sounding awkward. This felt like a downfall from the first two films.
I thought the movie started out wonderfully. Actually, not being totally up on X-Men and the story, I was quite impressed. The story was rather fascinating. But the ending of the film felt rushed, the "war" was hardly a war (it all took place in what, a parking lot?), and the killing of Jean felt rather anticlimactic. Also, the ending with Magneto and a chess board really annoyed me, because if he somehow still has his powers, what exactly was the point of the whole bloody film? If the cure really wasn't a cure? Granted, the film only suggested him still having his powers, and I do suppose it could be for any variety of different reasons, so I will let that one go.
Oh, and the whole angel wings guy subplot was poorly placed into the story. It was nice to see that he had some ultimate use in the film, in him having been the one who saved his father, but otherwise, it felt like they were just trying to stick him in. It felt misplaced, for sure.
What I loved about the film was the great array of powers on display, the whole theme of the film (to "take a stand" and not let people change you from who you are), and Ian McKellen (this guy deserves some award for starring in two huge event films in the summer and being the star of both of them - he is easily the bright spot of both The DaVinci Code and X-Men 3).
I also thought the scene when the army is invading the camp in the woods was very well done from a thriller/tension standpoint. The satellite view of the enclosing was quite creepy and adequate, and did well to show the scene. I knew something was off, but didn't figure it out until it was revealed. Well done.
I enjoyed all the little human touches to the film. Always enjoy things like that which bring a fantasy film into reality and show a commonality to us (the audience). It always helps; infact, I consider it essential, or the audience isn't connected to the film.
All in all, I will give this film a B-. Pretty good, but disappointing. The theme and drive of the film kept it afloat, and some particular, individual scenes were very impressive. However, the script really could have been cleaned up. And why was the film so intent on rushing to the end? The movie is only an hour and 44 minutes long; they could have created a REAL war and a better ending, in my opinion. The film was engaging enough to at least go to the 2 hour mark. No offense to Ratner fans, but I blame this on him.
PEACE, Mike.

I understood the leech bit. Scene just seemed daft.
@ BKB
To answer you question, I enjoyed X3 more than X1 but much less than X2.
Oh, and one of the best scenes of the film they put behind the bloody credits??? HELLO? Who's stupid idea was that? I thought it tied well back to the doctor video that Charles showed, and provided some interesting discussion. Doesn't really save the film from what it was though, and clearly this isn't The Last Stand with that. I mean, honestly, you are going to end the series with a scene like that? Maybe they will, but I bet we'll see an X4 soon, with the huge opening weekend of X3 and all.
PEACE, Mike.

I finally saw this, after being really busy with graduation-related shite during the past few weeks. My thought's echo Positive Jon's- it was quite a good movie, but it really lacked character-related moments. There weren't any really great moments between the various mutants, which were in plentiful supply the first two films. The action was pretty exciting and interesting, however. The special effects were fine, as was the acting (Ian McKellan was brilliant as always and Kelsey Grammer was suprisingly good). 'Tis was too short, though.

Storm: "I know they're ready Logan. The question is... if you're ready to do what you have to do!."
Cyclops: "Not everybody heals as fast as you, Logan!"
The president, after hearing of what's going on: "...then God help us!"
And that Juggernaut, bitch line? And "building bridges?" Good lord. The screenplay was awful, Mike.
Not only is it fraught with horrific dialogue but it also moves too fast. We're supposed to feel some type of dramatic weight after the deaths of Cyclops and Xavier, but we see Cyclops for all of five seconds, and there's just no set-up for Xavier's death.
The film tries to balance the cure storyline with the Phoenix storyline, and both ultimately end up going nowhere. This is supposed to be an all-out mutant war, but all we get is what looks like a relatively small battle, complete with a lame fire vs. iceguy final confrontation, a final "I love you" from Wolverine to Jean Grey (in an undeveloped romance), and useless secondary characters whose sole purpose, it seems, has become to appease the comic fans for their involvement in the storyline.
It might be wrong of me to criticize an X-Men film for forsaking character development for action -- but not when the first two did it so well. Honestly, do we learn anything about Wolverine in this film? Rogue? Storm?
It's also just outstandingly witless. The most humor we get is, what, a guy getting kicked in the balls?
I kind of hated this movie.

What's wrong is what's wrong with every diehard comic nerd: They take this stuff too seriously and overanalyze everything to death including the wish of having intelligent dialogue in a comicbook movie when it's just not gonna happen.. You want intelligent dialogue?? Watch The Shawshank Redemption, not X3..

I don't need genius dialogue; I just want some dialogue that's not ridiculous.

Meh. It's X-Men. Was the dialogue really any better in the first two movies?

I heard that Juggernaut (bitch) line was inspired by some internet flash animation or some sort. Any truth to that?

Thank you for answering my question that I didn't ask you guys.
I was talking about it with my brother, wondering if it was in the script because it was popular on the internet, or if it was popular on the internet cause someone read the script.
Now to find out where "BOOOM!! HEADSHOT!!" came from... Internet people, sometimes i don't understand them.

Oh and this has probably been addressed already, but someone help me out here:
Why the Golden Gate Bridge schtick? Couldn't Magneto have just used... a boat?

I'm with you. I've always been lukewarm to the X-Men series, though I would say I liked the first two. This movie was just terrible, though.
