The same thing could be said about Spider-man and Shrek 2 (especially Shrek 2). And yet the latter is number three on the domestic chart. And let's not forget that Shrek 2 and Pirates 2 have a lot of similar traits...breakout original WOM family hits that sold MASSIVE DVDs. I know 500 sounds crazy, but c'mon, nobody predicted 400 for Shrek 2, and look how that turned out.

I'm so in, btw. Not that you needed me to tell you.

Yeah, whether it's a "phenomenon" or not is disputable, but you can't say anything about Shrek 2 that you can't about POTC 2.

I'm in BTW, although I think the club should be at the Shrek 2 level.

Not really. SM1 was always going to be huge hit. Yes, SM1 was much bigger than people thought but it was always going to be huge.

Shrek and POTC were both fiilms that people were unsure about, and both movies surprised all with their fairly big openings(for a non-franchise movie). And then both really surprised everyone with their amazing legs. And both had great DVD sales.

Shrek is the best comparison.

Exactly, when something is as anticipated and well know before release as Spider-Man, there are fewer potential fans to add on DVD (the reason Shrek had a far greater gain in BO then the LOTR films). On DVD sleeper hits have a large pool of people who didn't catch them in theaters.

Nope.

It'll make somewhere between $350 and $400 million. I'll say $365 million just for now.

Yeah, can we change this to the 350m+ club. Cause at least that will get like more than 5 members. And there are still MANY who don't think it will get over 350m.

Not a chance.

Not even close.

I don't think it will make 300 mill. The first was fun but far from the kind of film that will be remembered years from now.

Well, you know, unless POTC2 was actually a well enough made movie that people might want to go see it more than once.

Considering Sith was better than the first Pirates, I'd say you're wrong.

Well, PotC1 certainly was; I myself saw it 11 times in theaters... I know people who actually saw it more than me! (and please note that going into PotC the first time, I was NOT a Johnny Depp fan [far from it, actually]; and it took me a few months to really get into him, so my multiple viewings came out of sheer entertainment from the movie as a whole)

And for PotC2, we've got the same cast, the same crew, the same writers, the same composer (kinda; although Badelt isn't going to be back, Zimmer overproduced the first movie's soundtrack and as many people say, Media Ventures music all sounds the same anyway....), etc. So all the ingredients are there for a repeat of the first movie. Add in new exciting characters, some EXTREMELY intense character interactions (believe me, ya'll are gonna be surprised by what you see), and lots more swordplay (Keira not only gets to wield a sword, she gets to wield TWO!), and we've got the makings of a sequel that can actually be more well-liked than the original movie. I'm seein' maybe an SW:ESB vs. SW:ANH situation; DMC ups the ante just as ESB did and cliffhangs like it did, too.... People are gonna be itchin' to see PotC3!

Joy

I think POTC was a Media Ventures team thing anyway. They didn't start working on it until June 2003.
