I would say the supporting actor categories tend to reflect checking back on the Academy lists, or the very least, if not for their nominations with the AAs, those names would not be in voters' minds.
I don't think it's a bad thing that an awards list skews towards smaller, more intimate films...but I think there is a little bit of a bias towards smaller movies. I think some films' strong showing has a lot to do with being recent. It's not that I don't think Eternal Sunshine and Before Sunset don't deserve spots on the list, but I think if those two and Million Dollar Baby were released in 2001, not all of them would be there.

Definately agree. You only get the best, most accurate results when you have all of the voters putting lots of effort into their ballot and thinking back through all of the years, or else the most recent films will fare better due to memory. Funny, the Academy does the same. Heh. Unfortunately, you just can't get that on a message board, or at least not on this one.

I don't know about Before Sunset, it got only a screenplay nomination at the yearly kj awards over a year ago, so if anything it seems like its support has strenghtened over the past year .

It is too sad that many good performances are forgotten and I partly blame the missing Oscar noms for it. It is a disadvantage on those retrospective lists, you can't deny that. And just to let ou know which omissions I am sad about so you can bash me for my taste... George Clooney (O Brother...) William H. Macy (The Cooler) Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) Samantha Morton (In America) Joan Allen (The Contender) Robert Duvall (Open Range) Alec Baldwin (The Cooler) Ray Liotta (Narc) Maria Bello (The Cooler, yes there's a pattern here. Best all around acting in a long time in this movie) Alfred Molina (Frida) It all does come down to personal preference. I am 100% positive that people were not looking at the Oscars, but made their own decisions. In my opinion, Kevin Bacon's performance in Mystic River was distinctly worse than Robbins' and Penn's.
McAdams was good in The Notebook, but I doubt she was worthy of a nom. I don't rememember, if I voted for Clooney, I might have...but thing is that the Best Actor category is VERY competetive with many many great performances from that time period. 90's awards should be really interesting. I'll have a hard time choosing among Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, and The Usual Suspects, as well as many others. I vote let's do it.

I'd also be interested in 90's awards. Between Silence of the Lambs, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Usual Suspects, Se7en, L.A. Confidential, Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix, Fight Club, and many more, there'll be a lot to choose from.
