I wouldn't say that...
(unless you picked Gigli for Best Picture )

I would say the supporting actor categories tend to reflect checking back on the Academy lists, or the very least, if not for their nominations with the AAs, those names would not be in voters' minds.
I don't think it's a bad thing that an awards list skews towards smaller, more intimate films...but I think there is a little bit of a bias towards smaller movies. I think some films' strong showing has a lot to do with being recent. It's not that I don't think Eternal Sunshine and Before Sunset don't deserve spots on the list, but I think if those two and Million Dollar Baby were released in 2001, not all of them would be there.

Definately agree. You only get the best, most accurate results when you have all of the voters putting lots of effort into their ballot and thinking back through all of the years, or else the most recent films will fare better due to memory. Funny, the Academy does the same. Heh. Unfortunately, you just can't get that on a message board, or at least not on this one.
PEACE, Mike.

I don't know about Before Sunset, it got only a screenplay nomination at the yearly kj awards over a year ago, so if anything it seems like its support has strenghtened over the past year .

I am very sure those who have voted have seen a lot of stuff, otherwise they wouldn't have even bothered, so it's not like they were restricted by anything in their voting. Of course they have and the Best Picture and Foreign Language categories are perfectly fine by me. There are movies that I personally wouldn't have put on it, but it is a decent list. As said before, my complaint lies in the acting categories. Take for example Mytic River. IMHO the best performance in that movie was by Kevin Bacon, yet the nominations go to Penn and Robbins - like the Oscars. Meryl Streep in Adaptation and Marisa Tomei for In the Bedroom wouldn't have been gotten nominations without their Oscar nod, I'm fairly sure about that. Cast Away was one of the weaker performances by Tom Hanks. I would even go so far to say - although I deeply love Almost Famous - Kate Hudson doesn't belong on that list either, neither does Albert Finney as nice as his role was in Erin Brockovich. Am I upset that my choices didn't get in? Of course. If you put a few hours in your ballot like most of us did, you wanna get your picks in. It is too sad that many good performances are forgotten and I partly blame the missing Oscar noms for it. It is a disadvantage on those retrospective lists, you can't deny that. And just to let ou know which omissions I am sad about so you can bash me for my taste... George Clooney (O Brother...) William H. Macy (The Cooler) Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) Samantha Morton (In America) Joan Allen (The Contender) Robert Duvall (Open Range) Alec Baldwin (The Cooler) Ray Liotta (Narc) Maria Bello (The Cooler, yes there's a pattern here. Best all around acting in a long time in this movie) Alfred Molina (Frida)
It all does come down to personal preference. I am 100% positive that people were not looking at the Oscars, but made their own decisions. In my opinion, Kevin Bacon's performance in Mystic River was distinctly worse than Robbins' and Penn's.
McAdams was good in The Notebook, but I doubt she was worthy of a nom. I don't rememember, if I voted for Clooney, I might have...but thing is that the Best Actor category is VERY competetive with many many great performances from that time period. As I said, it is neither about bad taste nor about Oscars, just personal preference of people who voted.

I completely agree that Clooney, Morton (And Sarah Bolger!), Bello and Duvall (especially...what a great little performance in a wonderful movie) got hosed.

Great nominations overall.
And GREAT job Mike! I'm sure it was painful counting all those ballots.

Be glad that you get complaints. It is the best indicator that people are into this thing and like what you're doing with it. If there weren't any complaints, it means people wouldn't care about it and you'd be in trouble

Alright, I got a new poll up. I think the title completely explains it all. Vote, and I will do the Ninety's Decade Film Awards after the HDFA if enough people show support. If you are not interested, then that's fine. Just looking to see!
PEACE, Mike.

90's awards should be really interesting. I'll have a hard time choosing among Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, and The Usual Suspects, as well as many others. I vote let's do it.

I'd also be interested in 90's awards. Between Silence of the Lambs, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Usual Suspects, Se7en, L.A. Confidential, Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix, Fight Club, and many more, there'll be a lot to choose from.
