My 12-year-old niece is reading a book she got from her school library about a girl who got raped. Now it doesn't bother me too much since she's pretty mature when it comes to being able to handle themes like that, but I couldn't help but think how a lot of parents wouldn't have as much of a problem with a book like that being in the school library as they would a book with a gay character. You're always hearing about books with gay characters being banned from schools or at least being complained about by parents. A lot of times gay kids who are confused about how they feel can't even get books from their school about it. Thankfully there's the internet now so they can look up info.

You're absolutly right, and as gays and lesbians begin to gain more acceptance within social norms and laws, we can expect more of a backlash. It's also funny that some people expect gays to sort of "tough-it-out" and live in a society that's clearly predjudiced against them, yet they're always the first to complain whenever they get offended by anything that goes against THEIR beliefs.

I'm not applying that theory to everyone of course.

A children's book about two male penguins that raise a baby penguin has been moved to the nonfiction section of two public library branches after parents complained it had homosexual undertones.

The illustrated book, "And Tango Makes Three," is based on a true story of two male penguins, named Roy and Silo, who adopted an abandoned egg at New York City's Central Park Zoo in the late 1990s.

The book, written by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson, was moved from the children's section at two Rolling Hills' Consolidated Library's branches in Savannah and St. Joseph in northwest Missouri.

Two parents had expressed concerns about the book last month.

Barbara Read, the Rolling Hills' director, said experts report that adoptions aren't unusual in the penguin world. However, moving the book to the nonfiction section would decrease the chance that it would "blindside" readers, she said.

Em, how can it be in the fiction section? It's like saying that a book about two black parents ought to be moved to fiction, since, you know, those black people- they don't exist :-0

It wasn't in the fiction section per se, but in the children's section, which probably includes both fiction and nonfiction books.

(Sorry, can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.)

I was in the Castro theatre in San Francisco watching the Oscars, and the tone of the crowd turned downright sad when BP Crash was announced. Talk about an Oscar upset! Whew!

Yeah, I mean, great movies never even won or get nominated for an Oscar and are better regarded than some movies that won.

If anything, the stigma will be for Crash - whenever it gets mentioned, Brokeback will certainly follow the next sentence.

Hold on a second.

A film about gay cowboys that scored $80 million and did NOT win Best Picture...

Doesn't that almost make its performance seem better?

That'll probably only continue for a year (maybe a few for die-hard cinema fans), but then taper off. I'm seriously disapointed, because I felt that awarding it Best Picture would have somehow crystalized the film in history and acted as some kind of precedent for future movies of its nature.

I dunno, maybe I'm being a tad melodramatic. It's a great movie that'll probably be remembered regardless.

What pisses me off, other than the movie not winning Best Picture of course , is that they never released the absolutely BEAUTIFUL song "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" as a single. It deserved to get a music video (with scenes from the movie) and play on the radio. I think it definitely would have been a hit. I don't get what's wrong with them. I wish they'd still do it, but after all this time they probably won't for sure now. It's really unfortunate.

It would be interesting to hear what the remixes sounded like, but I'm sure they can't do the gorgeous "The Wings" justice. I'm not really into club mixes though.

Haha, yeah. The first one I ever saw was the Titanic-in-30-seconds bunny parody. They have a whole bunch here: http://www.angryalien.com

Titanic, Jaws, King Kong, Scream, Star Wars, Alien, The Exorcist, etc....

PEACE, Mike.

I ordered a Brokeback Mountain shirt off e-bay and got it on Monday. Sadly it's too long for me and doesn't fit me right. But I special ordered it so I can't exchange it. I also ordered a High Tension shirt, which is on a different brand of shirt, and that one is just fine. It's the perfect length and fits me well (both are Medium too, and yet since they are different brands they are quite different in size). This is the BM one I ordered: http://cgi.ebay.com/Brokeback-Mountain- ... dZViewItem Except I got it on blue, which cost $5 extra, though it usually costs $7 but the guy gave it to me a little cheaper because he had to special order a shirt for someone else too. It pisses me off that I spent so much and now I can't even wear it. Now I'd know which to get but I can't afford to dish out more money for another shirt.

If anyone would like to buy this BM one from me for the amount I paid so I can use the money to get a different one in the same brand as the HT one let me know. I want a BM shirt, but one I can wear. It's a really nice shirt too (the picture anyway).

I'm not interested, but if the shirt is just too long (I've experienced that before), try to find someone who is a stitcher/sewer, and then all you need to do is cut the shirt at the level you want, and get the edges re-stiched/sewn. It should look just fine. I've a few times gotten my super sewer aunt to cut arm lengths or shirt lengths on my tees, to make them unique or fit better. Just a suggestion, if you can't get a buyer.

PEACe, Mike.

Arent those shirts slightly...illegal? I meant they are using the name, images from Focus and the faces of the actors to sell the products, unless they have the consent of Focus and the actors im not sure if that stuff is allowed?

Maybe, but it doesn't bother me. I'm happy as long as I can get shirts like that for movies I love, and ebay has lots of shirts like this. I can't see why Focus or other studios would care either because people wearing the shirts would be promoting their movie, so it's free publicity. If they don't want that then they should get the shirts out themselves, but you don't see that happening. It used to be where you could get shirts for movies on the websites for them that the studios put out, but I haven't seen that much anymore. If I really love a movie I want to show my love for it and want to wear a shirt for it. So as long as I can I don't care if the people making them are doing it illegally.

What I don't get is if Focus isn't making promo shirts themselves, then what's the big deal. It's basically free advertising for them.

Exactly!

Some studios make shirts to give out for their movies because if people wear them in public it's good advertising. Well this way they don't have to pay to have them made, so I can't see why they'd be mad that their movie is getting free promotion.

AUSTRALIA (AUD$) - Weekend 7

1 - Brokeback Mountain - $1,574,210 (or $1,611,557 incl. p/v - 48 SC)
2 - Brokeback Mountain - $3,173,790 ($1,003,156, -36%)
3 - Brokeback Mountain - $4,274,074 ($712,779, -29%)

5 - Brokeback Mountain - $6,330,884 ($644,479, -19%)
6 - Brokeback Mountain - $7,159,438 ($570,651, -11%)

Very dissapointing release strategy by the distributors here in Australia. It started off in limited theatres, which is fair enough.....however, they failed to capatilise on its pre-Oscar buzz and it's still in less than 100 screens in Australia. Comparatively Munich and Walk The Line all had wide releases......with the latter doing extremely well (AUD$12m after 6 weeks). This could've been a $10m contender.

Memoirs Of A Geisha - $9,697,603 ($149,097, -28%)
The Aviator - $8,275,364 ($162,120, -52%)*Easter
Brokeback Mountain - $7,830,831 ($424,829, -26%)
Finding Neverland - $7,544,380 ($158,108, -49%)
Pride And Prejudice - $6,803,672 ($82,462, -63%)
The Phantom Of The Opera - $6,509,650 ($183,811, -14%)
Cinderella Man - $5,925,456 ($29,806, -54%) - OUT
Closer - $5,780,818 ($47,061, -47%) - OUT

TAIPEI (TWD$) - Weekend 8

1 - Brokeback Mountain - 11,200,745 (8,369,250 2-Day) - 15
2 - Brokeback Mountain - 21,781,875 (1,980,750, -76.3%) - 15
3 - Brokeback Mountain - 34,074,095 (3,313,695, +67.3%) - 15
4 - Brokeback Mountain - 39,197,070 (1,628,290, -50.9%) - 14
5 - Brokeback Mountain - 41,993,845 (984,625, -39.5%) - 14
6 - Brokeback Mountain - 43,357,935 (540,385, -45.1%) - 9
7 - Brokeback Mountain - 44,452,600 (417,440, -22.8%) - 9
8 - Brokeback Mountain - 47,283,720 (1,198,340, +187.1%) - 13

Taiwan is Ang Lee crazy, and after his Best Director's win at the Oscars, BM adds 4 new screens in Taipei and jumps 187%. BM now surpasses 2004's surprise hit Phantom of the Opera and Fun with Dick and Jane. 50m TWD is not out of the question.

The Hulk (2003) - 57,522,075
Final Destination 3 (2006) - 47,963,895
Brokeback Mountain (2006) - 47,283,720

A Beautiful Mind (2002) - 37,554,200
Memoirs Of A Geisha (2006) - 33,574,940
The Aviator (2005) - 32,476,450

HONG KONG - Day 20

Outstanding performance in Hong Kong, and competing extremly well against local smash Two Becomes One. BM is outperforming such blockbusters as Pirates of the Caribbean, Ocean's 12...with the highest-gross for an Oscar nominee since ROTK.

Brokeback Mountain - $1,222,702 ($29,633)
The Hulk - $1,167,889 ($7,615)
The Aviator - $839,722 ($11,538)
