The reason I watched this affront to moviedom- A friend's birthday party. After everyone was suitably plastered, this porn, which she had recieved for free when buying something (I don't remember what) at a adult shop, was suggested as good viewing material. And it certainly was funny. I especially liked the Behind the Scenes documentary....really!

Apparently, the night before any major anal scene, many actress get enemas. And the film crews are scary as hell.

Ugh. Tepid's the only way to describe it. Simon West knows nothing about shooting horror films. His idea of pointing the camera down a long hallway for extended periods of time wears thin quickly. Further, every scare is of the "Boo!" variety. It's neck and neck with Boogeyman in terms how many stupid, stinger scares are used. And the "He's in the house!" line played in every trailer and TV spot? They STILL try to play it off like it's a secret!

Every once in awhile there is a movie so captivating that it grabs you and doesn’t let you go, even after the final credits roll. For the year of 2005, that film is BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Yes, the “gay cowboy” movie is a movie you will not soon forget. The performances woven into the film are one of a kind. The dialogue, while a bit cheesy at times is true and emotional. It’s a powerful film, a difficult film to watch in some aspects. It’s a film that is so emotional and depressing; you’ll be thinking about it for many weeks to come, I know I did.

The film starts in 1963. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger), a rancher and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), a rodeo cowboy are looking for work over the summer. They get a job taking care of sheep, illegally. One night, the unthinkable happens: Ennis and Jack create a life long bond and love relationship. Four years later, after they leave Brokeback Mountain, Ennis in married to the hard-working Alma (Michelle Williams), they have two children together. Jack is married to Laureen (Anne Hathaway) and they have a little boy together. Spanning the next fifteen or so years, they’ll go through love, heartache, misery and depression; and the biggest obstacle of all: living a lie.

I’ve always thought that acting is one of the most important things in a film. With terrible, laughable, cheesy acting; the movie won’t be taken seriously. In BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, the performances are so real and captivating, it feels like you’re living the film. Heath Ledger (CASANOVA) plays Ennis, a shy farm boy. He’s amazing in the role and deserves to win an Oscar. Throughout the course of the film, you can tell how much Ennis wants to be with Jack but he won’t admit it. He knows that if the wrong people find out that they’ve had a past, something could happen. Through his muffled voice, you see the brilliantly crafted soul of the character. Jake Gyllenhaal (THE GOOD GIRL) plays Jack, a somewhat openly bisexual rodeo cowboy. Many reviews have called Gyllenhaal the “woman” of the film. In a way, I guess they’re correct. He is the one that shows the emotion, he is the one that shows how much he is aching to be with the other person. He was snubbed for a nomination at the Golden Globes but the Oscars nominated him for Best Supporting Actor, which is great. While not as amazing as Ledger, he deserves to be recognized and to win. Michelle Williams (THE BAXTER) plays Ennis’ wife Alma, who finds out when Jack and Ennis reunite that Ennis is having an affair. Though she has few “big” scenes in the movie, she shines. Whether it’s a scene where she has no dialogue (the scene where she is crying, holding her daughter) or the scene were she is confronting her husband about what she saw, she turns out an Oscar worthy performance that not many people would be able to pull off. Anne Hathaway (THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT) plays Jack’s wife. Again, she has little to do with the story and her character is a little underdeveloped but her acting is great. A particular scene near the end of the film will leave you in tears. Linda Cardellini (SCOOBY DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASHED) turns out a surprisingly great performance as Ennis’ girlfriend, whom he goes out with after Alma and him get a divorce. She gives the second best performance of the girls. I hope there is more of her to come in the future.

There will always be people that call this the “gay cowboy movie.” They either disliked the film, didn’t understand what it’s like to be in love or just don’t want to see it because they’re too ignorant. To me, I wasn’t watching a “gay” film. I was watching a movie about undying love. No, the film wasn’t very graphic. Yes, you see them kiss and sex is shown for about two seconds and then all you see are their faces for another twenty. It’s not a film made to show off nudity, it’s tasteful and needed for the story. Every sex scene serves a purpose. Without the sex scene between Ennis and Jack, you wouldn’t have known they wanted each other so badly. Without the sex scene between Ennis and Alma, you wouldn’t have known that Ennis was craving Jack so badly. All scenes in this film serve a purpose. Ang Lee shoots a beautiful looking film. The cinematography is to die for; it’s some of the best of the year. The score is brilliant, if you like it enough you’ll be humming it and it will be in your head for days. The song A Love That Will Never Grow Old is just depressing and a great song. Every way you look at BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, it’s nothing short of breathtaking. I urge everyone to see this movie; whether you think you’ll enjoy it or not. So many people have been surprised by it. Hopefully everyone will enjoy it just as much as I did and if you don’t, well I’m sorry. I hope you at least understood what it feels like to be in love. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is my number five film of the year 2005, see it!

im not really disappointed, i didnt like the trailer from the very beginning, the story was very interesting but way to slow and painfully to long.

there were some parts that were fantastic but most of them werent, not a very consistant movie
The performance by Bana was great but still, i almost felt asleep!

Guilty pleasure

I had the very opposite reaction to the movie. Thought the first hour was tedious, dull and unfunny, but the 2nd half of the movie was very strong.

Final Destination 3 B

It's the makers of FD1 trying to imitate FD2. They try to twist their characters into the over-the-top cartoon violence of the sequel. It's not entirely successful, but the movie's a lot of fun and has a pretty tense last act. I need to see it again on Wednesday to figure out where it places against the other two.

Derailed - C-

one of the biggest letdowns I've ever seen. Everything they changed from the book (alot) worked against the movie.
