8.

Hmmm... what else was nominated that year?

Cider House Rules, Insider, Sixth Sense, Green Mile.

So, did any other film get more than 8 nods?

I don't remember anyone bringing up 1999 when we were saying its the lowest highest nods for a movie.

American Beauty was the only one with 8 nods, the most as well.

Pride & Prejudice - 4
King Kong - 4
Cinderella Man - 3
War of the Worlds - 3
A History of Violence - 2
Hustle & Flow - 2

The noms were insanely spread out this year. 10 films with 4 or more nominations!

I'm incredibly happy to see The Constant Gardener and King Kong grab 4 each.

War of the Worlds even nabbed 3 noms, and got the spot in Visual Effects! Sweet.

Also glad to see Cinderella Man get 3 noms, although it would have been nice to see it get more.

Overall, this isn't really the greatest Oscar season for me. Crash gets 6 noms, bleh. But Walk the Line is shut out allowing Munich to get in, which is pretty damn cool.

PEACE, Mike.

Further notes from me, heh:

I'm very disappointed that films like Batman Begins and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory got shafted in the technical categories, while Narnia walks away with four noms. Where the hell is Charlie's art direction nom? A huge snub there.

So, reading through the thread, has it been figured out yet whether Memoirs or Narnia has that confusion nom?

And lastly, I am super glad Munich could pull out the major nominations, because now hopefully it will receive a boost in audience attendance as well as theatre confidence. Hopefully Munich can ride well off of these noms and solidify a stronger total gross.

PEACE, Mike.

Very surprised that Walk the Line didn't get a BP nom. It seemed like a lock. Nice to see Knightley get a BA nod. She deserved it. What's up with Howard getting a BA nod for a movie hardly anyone saw? Crash would have made more sense. On that note, nice to see Dillon get nominated and I think he'll win unless Gyllenhaal or possibly Clooney pull it out.

Giamatti?

Also, Hustle & Flow made over $20M, which is a good 20 times the amount of what Transamerica, another acting nominee, has made.

By the way, no one has answered my question. Why were there 3 songs nominated and not 5?

Christian answered it somewhere...(or guessed, anyway)

Probably just didn't have 5 songs get the required score of 8.25 with the new voting system.

Him says: "I think not enough scored above an 8.25 (I guess only those 3 did), with the new bake-off point system that they had to use. No fewer than 3, no more than 5 nominees."

Oh, thanks to you and Christian (sorry didn't see yours earlier!)

That sounds kind of sketch, why has that never happened before?

I assume because they just implemented this requirement/system.

It's okay Libs, hehe.

Batman's cinematography nod is very well deserved, I actually thought it would be the ASC nominee that will get shafted. However, I would have liked to see the movie get an Art Direction nomination as most of the locations in the film are big soundstage set pieces (the bat cave, Ra's mansion, the narrows...)

Yep, they are the most recent.

Okay nominations overall. I'm a little bitter about Narnia getting more nods that both Goblet of Fire and The New World combined, but oh well.

Narnia certainly didn't deserve its nods. But then...neither would Potter!

I didn't like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it's absence from the Art Direction category was crazy.

The first Harry Potter movie having more nods than Goblet is just...weird, not to mention crazy.

I have to say, I was underwhelmed with the new Potter movie in every single way. No, I take that back. I liked Ralph Fiennes.

I actually think King Kong was snubbed from a Cinematography nod. :nonono:

Art Direction and Visual Effects were deserved.
I don't really know the sound categories or how they judge and I don't really care, so I wouldn't mind trading in those two nods for a cinem. nod.

Art Direction and Visual FX for KONG were more deserving than SITH???? That Lava Planet and Lightsaber fight around it had better FX in that 1 scene alone than KONG did throughout the whole movie..

And WALK THE LINE being snubbed for BEST PICTURE over BAREASS MOUNTAIN is a travesty to.. Perhaps if there were Gay sex involved in WALK THE LINE it would've been more of a contender.. :disgust:

SITH looks like a goddamn cartoon. Especially the lava and such and such.

And yet, SITH still managed to bring in nearly twice the amount of $$$ domestically as KONG did at it's paltry and underwhelming amount of $$$ at 212 Million.. :hahaha:

Which means what, exactly?

I wasn't crazy about King Kong either. But Kong himself was amazingly done.

Uhh how about the other four movies that got nominated instead of Walk the Line. Not much gay sex in those movies.

It may not have had the sex, but WTL was gayer than Brokeback Mountain

Good Night and Good Luck=no sex at all

Forgot about Giamatti. If he wins it will be more because he was snubbed in the past, not because of his performance in CM. Also, Hustle and Flow may have made more than TransAmerica but the latter seems more like an "Oscar Worthy" film than the former. Hustle and Flow is like 8 Mile getting a nomination.

As far as snubs go, I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory takes the cake.

Not only did it deserve a best pic nom, a best director nom and a best actor nom... But it was completely shafted on art direction, costumes, score and original song.

Seriously, the Charlie theme's the only piece of original scoring I can even remember this year.

Mwa-oo-wa-mwa-oo-wa-mwa-oo-wa-mwa-oo-mwa, mwa-oo-wa-mwa-oo-wa-mwa-oo-wa-mwa-oo-wa, doo-doo-da-de, de-de-dum, dum-de-de, dum-do-da...
