I see that the worst that this movie could do is get Art Direction, Cinematography and Costume Design (kind of like Girl WIth a Pearl Earring) only.

At this point that is looking like a reality, as I think Girl With a pearl earring did not incur this level of backlash.

- Art Direction
- Costume Design
- Score
- Cinematography
Even Gong Li is looking iffy..

The truth is the only reason we are still talking about possible nominations for Memoirs is because of the release date. If it has switched schedule with Kingdom of Heaven or Jarhead, I doubt it will be mentioned at all at this point. I wonder if Memoirs should have been hidden for a couple of more weeks (limited release on the 23rd) to possibly grab a few more mentions from like NBR, BFCA, and Globe from their strategic point of view if they had known it's going to get slammed like this, even though at the end it all wouldn't matter.

Well, maybe it would be a good lesson for Hollywood studio if Geisha would be shut out despite all the hush-hush-awards talk beforehand. They shouldn't be rewarded just for positioning it in december since they failed to deliver a good movie

Ebert & Roeper covered Memoirs this week. Roeper gave it a thumb up as he liked the story, while Ebert gave it a thumb up saying he liked the production values but thought the story was hollow and looked at the story from outside.

29% rotten with 51 reviews: 15 fresh, 36 rotten. Average Rating: 5.3/10
28% COTC, Average Rating COTC: 5.2/10
Okay, that is really bad. Worse than Phantom and seriously, not too far away from Alexander anymore, heh.

Even though ive been looking forward to this for a long time - I always had a feeling it wouldnt be an awards getter. Its just impossible to predict what will be good or not a year in advance. Even Munich is Iffy.
I think it can get a few noms though:
Supporting Actress
Art Direction
Costume Design
Cinematography

Heh, I find it interesting how now that Geisha is getting bad reviews everyone seems to be saying how they always thought it wouldn't be a big player and all. Just a note.

Make-Up
Costumes
Art Direction
Score could easily go to Munich or Star Wars for Williams now. But it could get nominated here.
Cinematography... no. It usually aligns closer with Best Picture nominees.

Re: What's the worst Memoirs of a Geisha can do at the Oscar
Dr. Lecter wrote: Well, the movie that used to be pretty much one of the frontrunners for this year's Oscars have started out rather unimpressively out of the gates with 40% at RT (after five reviews) and some mostly "just decent" early reviews.Still, the movie still has a huge push behind it. If you need to be convinced, just take a look at this thread by Loyal. To those who will try and say that the same has been said about Jarhead, I would like to remind you that Jarhead's strengths were considered the war-movie genre and Sam Mendes. Geisha just has infinitely more. Rob Marshall delivered one of the most-nominated movies ever with Chicago and if there is something he has definitely proven with Chicago, then that is that he is great with production values and style. One might argue over the movie's quality, but you must admit that it was a visual feast at least. As you may notice, he works with the same team on the movie's costume and production design as he did when making Chicago. When you also have Steven Spielberg as the producer and John Williams as the composr, what really can go wrong?Granted, the response so far has certainly not been as overwhelming as most have expected, but I really really have hard time believing that it still won't get plentiful of Oscar noms. So what's the worst it can do, nominations-wise?I think the very worst would be something similar to Cold Mountain. Funnily enough that was also a movie by a director whose movie won Oscars big time not too long ago (The English Patient) and it was also a history-based "epic" and an adaptation of an acclaimed and best-selling novel. Cold Mountain scored eight nominations at the Golden Globes in its year and shocked many not getting nominated for Best Picture in its year. It still scored seven Academy Awards nominations: Best Song (two noms), Best Score, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. It won only the Best Sup. Actress trophy. Before anyone jumps at me now, I still think that Geisha will be nominated for Best Picture and most likely Best Director as well, unless there is a major screw-up with this movie. But I am speaking of the worst-case scenario here. In that scenario, I think Cold Mountain is the best recent comparison I can come up with. I don't see Memoirs of a Geisha getting less than 7 nominations. That would be the worst I'd say it will do. Those are the ones I am seeing in the worst-case scenario:
Best Score Best Costume Design Best Cinematography Best Art Direction Best Editing Best Actress Best Supporting ActressWhat do you think is the worst it can perform nominations-wise?
As this thread just won't die, just curious how this thread started.
Not sure why as even though 5 average reviews were first out, Lecter pumped this up as much as he did?
Looking back, did this ever have a chance - and as X said , if not for the time-release, this might have been ..............
Maybe the North County or Cinderella Man of the Oscar release season.

Wow, FIVE AVERAGE REVIEWS were out and I suppose that already spelled doom for the movie.
Not to mention that Ray actually started out just as badly until it got to over 20 reviews.
In other words, time to take the medicine, Goldie ; )

Seriously, for someone who makes more stupid threads and polls than there are stupid news and articles in Britain's The Guardian (sorry, what an insult to The Guardian), I don't think you should be complaining about a thread that contains more than ten own words and a question mark in the first post : )

Lecter, please tell me which threads you are talking about. Cause mostly they are about current movies. Please lets try putting something out there instead of your big mouth.
and as we know English and analyzing things are not your strong point so I will point out in very small words that I asked a question to everyone that you of course missed.

Seriously, I will not even bother answering questions asked by you. Except for one. You are asking which threads I mean? I mean the bazillion of annoying polls in the Cinemania that make the eyes hurt.
PS: Time to take the medicine, Goldie.

I think people are not blind. And the question is dumb, vague and has been approached in different discussions before.

As I suspected months ago, Memoirs is ending up off putting, probably by that damn Anglicization. I'm not a fan of movies like Hero, Daggers, or even 2046, but I think Geisha would have been absolutely epic if presented in Japanese. That said, I still haven't seen the movie and should probably shut the hell up about it.

With the same cast, though? I mean it'd still be Chinese actresses speaking and playing Japanese. It#s just that we would notice less of it, but it'd probably be equally hard for them (hurting their performance) and would not come across well in, say, Japan.

Let's face it. Americans don't know jack shit about the nuances of the Chinese or Japanese languages. We would say, "Gee, that sounds authentic". Then again, the movie would be an utter waste at the box office. No foreign film can justify the huge budget Geisha probably has. I guess going English follows the way the book was written and opens appeal to the main movie market, so it sorta had to be done.... I just feel sorry seeing talents sort of force that slurred Chinese-English. Talk about really souring the tone of the film.
