Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (12/05-06); 2021 Begins!
21-22% down from last Friday with some new competition AND the giveaway right around the corner seems like a great trend to me. I'm predicting 10-15% over last Saturday for tomorrow.

A 10-15% increase while good just wouldn't cut for weekend increase IMO because of giveaways the Sunday could go down from last weekend (even though there is no reason for it to decrease).

Kimetsu just destroyed the previous record of the highest week one for a single volume that belonged to One Piece (with 2,275,453 sold copies in 5 days)
It has also destroyed its own record of the highest week for a series with over 4.7 million sold copies this week
Seriously after all we've seen I thought KnY sales couldn't surprise me anymore, but boy I was so wrong... Over 3.4 million sold copies in just 3 days !!
This will go down in history. I don't think we'll ever see something like this ever again. OMG!!!!

I've realized for quite some time now that a lot of lurkers frequent this thread, for a couple years at least, due to the amount of views it receives. Just curious how and where you guys came upon our forum. And definitely glad all of you have joined recently. I was a recent lurker because I wanted to see how DS will do and after searching google, this thread was the only one I saw that has enough research and info. I have learned a lot these past weeks because of all your analyses and your insights. Thank you to all of you.

The giveaway effect has proven to be strong so far but I'm being cautious because of the fact that with each giveaway, the impact ceiling gets lower. Most people who went for a repeat viewing because of a giveaway will likely not go for another repeat viewing because of another giveaway, at least that's what logic would dictate. We've already had multiple giveaways, the strength of their effect cannot be everlasting. Maybe I'm lowballing it, but if I'm wrong, I'll gladly take a higher increase.

Are people allowed to buy a ticket to collect the giveaway item and then leave the theater? I'm sure for the fans, the price of admission is well worth the limited time collectible. They also wouldn't have to spend 2 hours rewatching the film if they really don't have the time for it.

Can someone check the reserve situation for Sunday? The reserve situation for Sat is +70% from the previous giveaway Sat (2 weeks ago), so Sun is supposed to be big too, no?

Corpse wrote: JustLurking wrote: @corpse: what would you say is the expectation for the neverland movie next week? I've been pretty curious about this for a while. The manga is quite popular and I feel like the first arc fits a movie quite well, and it requiring very little CG makes for an easy LA transition as well. The first arc does fit a single-movie/plot time frame quite well too, I think. And as you said, this adaptation would need pretty minimal CG. But I'm not especially confident in its box-office. The manga is popular, but it never really broke out beyond that sort of normal breakout hit status (i.e. Tokyo Ghoul, My Hero Academia, Haikyuu!, Fairy Tail, etc.) into the more phenomenal hit status (i.e. One Piece, Demon Slayer, Naruto, Attack on Titan, etc.). Most live-action adaptation of a manga series typically don't perform particularly well since they largely just appeal to the fanbase (so their audience ends up being limited to the ~1/1.5 million people who buy the volumes); unless as I mentioned, they manage to reach a certain level of success beyond just breakout hit series. ¥1/1.5 billion is usually where most tend to land (Tokyo Ghoul, Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, Kimi ni Todoke, second Attack on Titan film, etc.). I'd expect The Promised Neverland to fall into this category. Some can get up into the ¥2-3 billion range, such as the Assassination Classroom films, two of the Death Note films, and probably a couple more I'm not remembering off the top of my head. The Shojo titles, such as Strobe Edge and Orange, have a decent track record of landing in this range (or getting very close) due to their strong female appeal and being far easier to adapt as live-action. The ¥3-4 billion range is usually the ceiling. The first Attack on Titan live-action film, two of the Death Note films, the first Gantz film, the 20th Century Boy trilogy (the second one may have barely missed, I don't remember), and two of the Rurouni Kenshin films. I need to check to make 100% certain, but I think the only two that have broke ¥5 billion is the first sequel in the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy and the Kingdom live-action film last year, if you exclude the Umizaru live-action films since those were released after its hit live-action TV series adaptation where it was more well-known. With The Promised Neverland opening next week, I can put together a chart of Highest Grossing Live-Action Manga Films. HOWEVER, A LOT (probably a majority) of Japanese films are based on manga, so I'd have to somehow limit it to certain publications or magazines or something. Any ideas? NOTE: The films I included in the various ranges are off the top of my head. I may have misplaced a couple. I see, I was thinking maybe 2-2.5bln would be a good target but I guess 1-1.5 is more likely.

¥2 billion could happen (especially from the upcoming holiday boost), but I'd bet on a total more around ¥1/1.5 billion.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (12/05-06); 2021 Begins!
New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms performed well on Friday, probably coming in around ~¥160/170 million ($1.5/1.6 million) with ~125,000 admissions or so.
From this first day, it should be targeting an opening weekend between ¥400-500 million ($4-5 million) and 300,000-400,000 admissions, so a 3-day total around ¥550-650 million ($5.5-6.5 million) and 425,000-525,000 admissions is possible.
So with this early weekend projection, a total of ¥4 billion ($40 million) would be possible. But let's wait and see more numbers before projecting a possible total for now.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (12/05-06); 2021 Begins!
After this weekend, Demon Slayer is going to be right on the cusp of the ¥30 billion (~$285 million) milestone, becoming only the second film to ever reach the mark (after Spirited Away of course). So it's either going to reach the milestone on its 59th-day (Sunday) or 60th-day (Monday) in release.
It's likely going to surpass Spirited Away and become the new #1 film of all-time next week, possibly on December 20th. It will need another week, maybe slightly less (such as Christmas Day), to beat Spirited Away's admissions to become the new #1 film of all-time in admissions, too.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (12/05-06); 2021 Begins!

Do you speak about Spirited Away with or without re-release ?

660M away and only “maybe” by Sunday? Not sure if this is a general instinct toward conservatism or bad news about the weekend incoming

Just being safe. Don't want to call ¥30 billion right now and it's at like ¥29.99 billion instead.
Reservations are very strong, and very likely indicate a weekend increase that would get it above ¥30 billion, but with the lower quantity of the limited giveaway this weekend (750,000), the reservations will understandably be very high for Saturday and probably Sunday, too.
Saturdays reservations two weeks ago (the previous giveaway weekend) were up 78% over the prior Saturday, but the weekend itself saw a decline of 3%. That 3% decline was still exceptional, obviously, but this shows that the Saturday reservations are accounting for a significant share of the weekend business.

When Demon Slayer breaks ¥¥30.8 billion, it'll be reported as the new highest-grossing film. If you add the re-release to Spirited Away's total, then Demon Slayer would likely surpass that number after another week or so (around Christmas).

Obviously this is pretty much uncharted territory so I'm kind of curious to see if it gets some sort of boost once it gets reported as the new highest grossing movie of all time, and how big if so.

How many percent increased in reservations last Saturday compared to Saturday 3 weeks ago ? And do you think a 10% to 20% increase this weekend is possible compared to last weekend ?
