It's a character I care about at stake, not countless nameless people at the mercy of a bomb/torpedo/some sort of doomsday device. The stakes felt higher here to me.

Maybe thats the difference. Nobody REALLY cares about M. Yeah, theres some emotional attachment but, it doesnt even rival vesper, who was only in one movie.

itll have great wom, but it wont be batmans level.

"It's called a radio"

This one is funny as hell. That might be new favorite line, as well as Bond gleefully watching his Martini being shaken the hell out of it and saying "Perfect"

Wow this movie is a trip. Probably the most thought provoking of the Bond films, yet completely simple in what it's trying to set out. Mendes did a great job as the acting is top notch, as is the cinematography (The night city skylines and the Sniper scene is just beautiful to look at) The bond girls are effective if underused in this one but I completely can feel the past relationship of Eve and other characters of the past, and after thinking Q would suck, there one scene working together was very fun. Bardem is quirky and interesting, but I'm not sure if his payoff is where it should be. The action and score are both very well done, if not quite up to par of Casino. I can't say I was necessarily wowed by any action scene in this one, like I was in CR, but this Bond is not quite as good as the Freshly 007 of Casino, the action is meant to be more subdued. It's kind of funny that a film so different feels so much like Vintage Bond. I only hope that Bond is back in shape for the next one which now with the necessary characters in play, we'll get a truly awesome mix of old and new that this one is hinting at.

Casino Royale A+
Quantam of Solace B+
Skyfall A

And here' s my name gripe

Spoiler: show
I kind of wish that Bond wasn't his real name. Considering M is replaced by the end, as is Q, I was hoping the Bond 007 name was more of a Dread Pirate Robertson. In the sense that "this isn't baseball, we don't retire numbers, I think that works more with the expendability of Bardem's character especially begging her to be called by his real name. Imagine if say Dalton or particularly Brosnan turned out to be the villain. How much awesome would that be, and of course how pissed off would fans be

Excel

I think her death is much more thematic in this one, despite her coldness in other films. It's the idea that Bond loss his entire family, they go back to his old house, it's destroyed and his "mum" was killed at his chapel. On screen it's done adequately. There is only so much you can give M in a Bond film, but her motherly relationship has certainly always been present in the Craig's Bond

Oh I know, but at the same time, both are such cold characters that it just doesnt work overly well. Yeah, it is deeper than the standard bond fare, but its hardly anything special in general. Bond is a loner - what else is new?

dont get me wrong, its a good movie that I enjoyed. I just dont think it is near goldfinger, ohmss, etc.

A fantastic action and suspense film. This, over half a decade later, is the nuanced, playful, and rewarding sequel franchise savior Casino Royale deserves. Daniel Craig is in top form as Bond: his version of the character remains aching and anxious, but here he also explores the character's lighter side. The action is exciting, though also surprising. The film does not aim to be the most complicated, epic, and over-the-top Bond film. Instead, it ends with a quiet four-person chase, generating incredible suspense through old-fashioned staging and ace acting instead of computer-generated flash and rapid-fire editing. The film is also memorable for an antagonist who is colorful, frightening, and sad in equal measure (a tragic monster created by the cruel modern world) and awe-inspiring visuals, the Shanghai sequence in particular.

A

The tone of the Scotland scenes reminds me of the third act of On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Oh, and:

1. The Living Daylights
2. From Russia with Love
3. Casino Royale
4. Licence to Kill
5. Skyfall
6. Goldfinger
7. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
8. GoldenEye
9. Thunderball
10. Dr. No

Licence to Kill fourth? Yuck. Dalton's good, but it's such a cliche late-80s action flick.

On par with my favorite Bond, CR. Will have to see again to decide whether it's better.

Loved Bardem in this.

Loved it and might just be my favorite Bond movie ever. Enjoy how dark and serious the movie feels; at one time, it almost gave me Joker and The Dark Knight type of feeling (but not that dark). Great screen presence from Bardem; one of the better villains in the series. Of course Adele's title song is top-notch. Bond's girl had very little screen time though, and there isn't much romance here. Love the shoutout to the previous movies such as the car with the ejectable seat and the end dialog with Moneypenny. A.

I want to see it again in IMAX before I write anything substantial, but I think I loved it. The last two minutes were a sight for sore eyes. Just seeing that coat hanger sent chills down my spine.

I'd take Casino Royale over Skyfall -- more memorable set pieces, and I'm a sucker for 'Bond falls in love... then she dies at the end' stories.

It is strange Craig is eight years into his tenure as Bond, the same amount of time separating Die Another Day from GoldenEye. Craig feels much, much fresher in the role eight years later (still finding new notes to play in the role) than Brosnan did, say, four years into his Bond era.

A highly entertaining, dynamically made Bond flick that usurps Casino Royale to be the best outing from Daniel Craig so far. I'm not as head over heels in love with this movie as a lot of people are, but it's pretty darn good. B+

Can't really blame that on Brosnan (Craig is a better actor though).

The Brosnan movies went in the wrong direction. Every subsequent film moved closer to the spirit of the Roger Moore era and its camp.

Oh, and I s'pose it has been seven years since Craig was cast. James Berardinelli said eight.

I wouldn't say that. The World is Not Enough has it's outlandish elements, but it is more toned down than Tomorrow Never Dies.

I think the leap from The World is Not Enough to Die Another Day and how absurd that film was cast a shadow over his run and made it seem like each film got more outlandish with each outing.

Yeah, I'd say Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist alone makes it campier.
