I am pretty sure the first time I read your grade it was a B+, hehe.

Was it? I wanted to give it that this time, but thought I gave it a B so I didn't.

Ohhh, I already see the flames coming to me. What can I say? I really got a kick out of this flick which I admit has more flaws than one could count on both hands, but at the same time manages to be one of the most entertaining romps last year. Some scenes were that unrealistic that I even laughed at them myself pretty hard. I mean how on earth was Kate Beckinsale supposed to catch that injection with one hand while swingin on a rope in the middle of a rainy night?! But I am used to drop my sense of realism when watching movies like this one. Moreover, I guess I have somewhat of a soft spot for monsters and creatures of all kind, so this one hit the bullseye for me.

Hugh Jackamn pretty much delivered the only good performance of the movie. Kate Beckinsale is wasted and Richard Roxburgh's over-the-top Dracula impersonation was just...weird? His brides were simply ridiculous and delivered the worst pieces of acting I have seen in a blockbuster in quite a while.

Other than that, I found the action hugely entertaining. The CGI could have been better...actually could have been much better considering the $150+ million budget, but there have been some good effects as well. The set design as well as the cinematography are superb in this one and I applaud this movie for not dragging at all despite a rather long-ish running time. It's a popcorn film at (almost) its best and at (definitely) its dumbest.

This movie is so fucking bad - which is a shame, because it's a brilliant concept. What a waste.

Last year I spent a week living with a rural Panamanian family who LOVED this movie. I couldn't understand why until I watched it with them. All the completely over-the-top nonsense they just took as straight comedy. By laughing at how unbelievably melodramatic and ridiculous Van Helsing is, it became a fantastic experience.

Sadly, I don't think that there's any way to recreate the circumstances that made this into an enormously entertaining experience. I tried to show it again to some friends with that context in mind and we still had to turn it off.

Van Helsing is sort of a guilty pleasure. I don't really like it all that much, but I usually watch it when I see it on TV.

D

Yuk. I liked GI Joe but I wonder how Sommers even made it that far since Mummy, Mummy 2 and this are all horrible.

This happened to me with Alien vs. Predator 2.

For better or worse, I agree. It's far from perfect, but I liked what I saw. Certainly dripped with untapped potential, but oh well.
