 Summer 2010: Retrospective
Looking back on summer 2010, here are some film accomplishments I've come up with. Feel free to use these, or add your own.
Most unnecessary sequel: Cats and Dogs 2 Runner up: Nanny McPhee 2
Best actor/actress comeback: Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables (1st $100 m film in 25 years). Runner up: Russell Crowe in Robin Hood
Franchise ender: Shrek 4 (domestic) Runner up: Step Up 3D
Worst idea for a movie: Magruber Runner up: Marmaduke
Most underwhelming box office run despite a massive box office tally: Shrek 4 Runner up: Iron Man 2
Most disappointing box office weekend: May 28-30 with Prince of Persia, SATC 2, and Shrek 4 all disappointing
Most surprising box office weekend: July 9-11 with Despicable Me. This was supposed to be one of the weakest weekends of the summer but turned out to be one of the strongest.
Most surprising sequel box office disappointment: SATC 2 Runner up: Iron Man 2 (Underwhelming)
Film that had the highest potential for a mega box office run but didn't: A-team Runner up: SATC 2
Most shocking box office performance: Despicable Me Runner up: The Karate Kid
Most predictable box office run: Eclipse Runner up: Toy Story 3
Biggest flop of the summer: Jonah Hex Runner up: Magruber
Best ensemble box office performance: Grown Ups Runner up: Inception
Biggest comeback: Universal Studios with Despicable Me Runner up: M. Night Shymalan for The Last Airbender
Favorite box office performance of the summer: Despicable Me Runner up: Inception
Most unnecessary tentpole blockbuster with a $150 m + budget: The Sorceror's Apprentice Runner up: Prince of Persia
Most talked about box office run of the summer: Inception Runner up: Despicable Me
Best example of starpower: Angelina Jolie in Salt (Actress), Adam Sandler (Actor)
Worst example of starpower: Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day
Most deserved bad box office run: Cats and Dogs 2
Most deserved good box office run: Toy Story 3

 Re: Summer 2010: Retrospective
I disagree with almost all said about Sex and the City 2. There was so much history backing it up from female sequels with big openings like CA2, Lara Croft, and even ensemble films where less happens the second time around like Ocean's. There was absolutely nothing surprising about its run, but it was still not a disappointment by any means.
Maybe its just cause I rocked this summer by nailing Shrek 4, SATC, Despicable Me, ATeam, Grown UPs and The Expendables that this just seems like one of the most predictable summers ever. The only real surprises would have to be K&D (Though only in the soft weekend, everything else has been pretty good about it) Iron Man decreasing, and Karate Kid being so much of a monster opening weekend (Surprised that isn't on there for you at all)

I agree in most of them, but "Favorite box office performance of the summer: Despicable Me Runner up: Inception"
both Inception and TS3 were the most favorites
Despicable Me was just a big surprise

 Re: Summer 2010: Retrospective
Jim Halpert wrote: Sure there gun I just don't understand what was so surprising about most of these films. Shrek 3 was not well liked (I said after the first trailer it had a very good chance to do below the originals, but overseas would be huge enough that it would still be a monster) SATC has already been stated many times. Name another big opener for females that got a sequel, they all decreased. Despicable Me- How to train your dragon was a blueprint for middletier animated films that should be in the 180 million range, but 3D gives it a more solid 220+ gross. The A-team had sucky trailers, Grown Ups and Expendables were both given good examples with bigger ensemble actor films like Valentines Day earlier in the year. There were a lot of indicators to what these films were going to do before hand. Other than Iron man, Karate Kid, and K&D, Inception was the most unpredictable film of the summer, and even that wasn't a shocker, maybe Sorcerer's Apprentice given its good trailer reaction.

 Re: Summer 2010: Retrospective
I would say most lackluster run of the summer- Dinner for Schmucks (I kind of was just there) Runner Up- Predators, especially with the good reviews and good opening. For a summer with pretty better than average legs (Even a hated Shamalan (I know its spelled wrong, but he does not deserve spell check) film held better) Predators was lackluster.
Under the Radar Performance- Expendables (It's getting a 3 multiplier, and has as many younger and female audiences is spectacular) Runner Up- The Other Guys, it's doing really good numbers and holds, but noone mentions it.
Biggest WoW- Machete outgrossing Grindhouse seems very good. Runner Up- Scott Pilgrim is going to hit a 3 multiplier

 Re: Summer 2010: Retrospective
Oh, and also:
Biggest comeback: Universal Studios with Despicable Me Runner up: M. Night Shymalan for The Last Airbender
the last Airbender was not a big and good comeback IMO, maybe karate kid could be considered instead of Shyamalan last work

Despicable Me was just a big surprise To clarify, I meant my personal favorite box office performance of the summer. I enjoyed following Despicable Me's box office run the most this summer.

 Re: Summer 2010: Retrospective
Um, lacklustre? Predators wasn't ever going to get a higher total than what it did and Schmucks too considering all previous flicks.

 Re: Summer 2010: Retrospective
The Karate Kid is probably the 2nd-biggest comeback of the summer - for Jackie Chan. His biggest film since Rush Hour 2.

Lackluster after the fact it barely got a 2 multiplier, I never expected to do much more than 65 million at the most, but its legs should have been much better, it basically had the worst legs of the summer for a well received film critically and audiences. Especially that most action films are close to a 3 multiplier or higher.
