Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Forecast
No. Very little news or updates this week, but I don't think it's grossed $100m yet (during the weekdays) because that should have been reported.
The last showings for Saturday are currently taking place, so maybe some partial Saturday admissions will be known soon.

Looks like Flowering Dogwood might be heading towards a possible Y350 million ($4m) opening.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Forecast
No official numbers yet, but data is suggesting the Top 3 to look something like this (rankings in admissions):
1. The Borrower Arrietty (Y3.3-3.6 million, or $3.8-4.2 million), would make it's 6th consecutive week on top in admissions. 2. Toy Story 3 (Y3.7-4 million, or $4.3-4.6 million), would be it's 4th consecutive week on top in gross, 5th week overall. 3. Flowering Dogwood (Y2.9-3.3 million, or $3.3-3.8 million)
Which would be great holds for Arrietty and Toy Story 3 coming off a Holiday Weekend. The big blockbusters like them normally defy normal drops, so maybe not that unexpected, but still somewhat surprising.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Forecast
Screendaily has some numbers for imported films in:
A-Team - $2.2m. -Given how SD and THR report 3day weekends for Friday openers, a $2.2m 3-day would be pretty disappointing. But it could have been worse as I doubt anyone knew what it even was.
Cats and Dogs 2 - $800,000 on 345 screens. -Expected disappointment, and I doubt it made the Top 10. I didn't think it'd made the Top 10 when it was projected to open at No.10.
Inception - $1.7m, $35.3m total. -Just under a 40% drop, which is great for the weekend.
Toy Story 3 - $2.6m, $106.6m. -I believe SD has this one quite off. It's a near 60% drop (second biggest post-Obon weekend drop ever) and while many films opened this weekend geared toward a young audience, and last weekend was a holiday, nothing has suggested such a severe weekend drop. The total looks perfectly fine, but the weekend number looks very fishy.
How To Train Your Dragon - $407,000, $7.7m total. -Big drop, but not surprising coming off a holiday and so many films aimed at kids opening this past week.
The Karate Kid - $1.6m, $8.4m total. -As predicted, one of the biggest second weekend drops of the year at about 55%.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Forecast
SHIKOKU 1 N Flowering Dogwood (Toho) 1 2 1 Police Dog Dream (Shichoku) 2 3 2 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 6 4 3 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 7 5 N Metal Fight Beyblade VS Taiyō Shakunetsu no Shinryakusha (Toho) 6 6 Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions Zoroark (Toho) 7 7 N Thriller Restaurant (Toei) 8 5 The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Disney) 2 9 - The Karate Kid (Sony) 2 10 N Cats and Dogs 2: Great War of the World's Largest Meatball (WB)
To come out on top in admissions at all three major theater chains means Flowering Dogwood is almost certain to be No.1 this weekend.
So SD's $2.6m for TS3 might be closer than I thought since Flowering Dogwood, at most, would have grossed around $4m. Perhaps all the kid/family films released this weekend took an unexpected toll on the Toys.
Surprising to see The Karate Kid make the Top 10 here after not even ranking last weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Rankings
That's the Japanese title, and I doubt I'd ever get to use it beyond this weekend (and it may not have even made the National Top 10). So I'll be using it as much as I can.

Inception is out of the Top 10... even though it made more than twice as much as C&D2 according to SD?

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Rankings
No, it'll be in the Top 10. It ranked 8th last weekend at Shikoku locations, so it hasn't been playing too well there. And with so many openers this weekend, dropping out of the top 10 at those locations makes sense.
If I had to guess where it ranks before the National Top 10 is released, I'd say 7th. The higher tickets will give it the advantage over all of the kids/family films.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Rankings
Weekend Rankings August 21-22, 2010 1 N Flowering Dogwood (Toho)2 2 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 6 3 1 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 7 4 N The A-Team (Fox) 5 N Metal Fight Beyblade VS Taiyō Shakunetsu no Shinryakusha (Toho)6 3 The Karate Kid (Sony) 2 7 7 Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Double & Decade Forever A-Z (Toei) 3 8 5 Inception (WB) 5 9 4 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 8 10 9 Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions Zoroark (Toho) 7 A little surprising to see Flowering Dogwood at No.1 this weekend, but Kamen Rider managing the same position as last weekend is shocking. It actually rose one spot in admissions. This is a franchise that is known as the most frontloaded in the country, barely reaching a multiplier of 3 with most of the films released every year. The Sorcerer's Apprentice died. Numbers should be available soon.

glad to see great holds specially for Toy Story 3, The Borrower Arrietty, good for Inception and Pokemon 13, they don't want to leave the top 10

The most recent exchange rate (BOM just used Sunday's) is becoming a little crazy, it's never been like this before and it's not slowing down. Toy Story 3 and Inception are estimates, but since they're the only two film without an actual Yen gross yet, I went ahead and updated the charts.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Rankings
Are those really totals as of Sunday? That would be shockingly good drops for all 3 (down 25% or so for the week).

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Rankings
Based on 14.4M gross over last week.
if TS3 averages 30% drop it will make ~ 144M in Japan.
it needs to average around 26% drop to make 150M.
Big question is how long TS3 will be able to retain its theaters(and 3d screens). When is Avatar releasing in japan?

Glad to see Salt broke the $20m barrier. Multipliers really are incredible in Japan. Maybe it can get to $24/25m.

Big question is how long TS3 will be able to retain its theaters(and 3d screens). When is Avatar releasing in japan? It's only playing on 3D screens now, and 3D is back to representing 80% of it's total gross again (will probably be the same as Alice's 84% when it's finished). Avatar won't be released until October, but Resident Evil IV (fairy popular series) and Umizaru 3 (going to break the local screen count record to be the first with more than 500 screens, 600 is possible, and is the first major local 3D release) will be released back to back mid-September, so Toy Story 3 will more than likely be a the end of it's run may be September 18th.
