"Universal's "Robin Hood" braved a generally soft weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit, narrowly holding on to the No. 1 overseas spot for the second consecutive stanza.
Unseasonably warm weather in key Western European markets suppressed attendance by as much as half in Scandinavia to a third in Spain and the U.K., according to Disney calculations. Paramount described the situation as a "heat wave across Europe which kept grosses down for all films."
Dropping 60% from its opening launch, Universal's "Robin Hood" fought its way to $30 million in its second round on the foreign circuit, playing 7,064 sites in 59 markets. So far, director Ridley Scott's re-imagining of the Crusades-era outlaw costarring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett has grossed a total of $125 million overseas.
"Robin Hood" finished No. 2 in the U.K. and Germany but logged strong No. 1 second round finishes in France ($2.7 million from 648 locations for a 12-day market cume of $10.9 million) and in Australia ($2.98 million from 461 situations for a cume of $9.2 million). The film has six more markets to play including China in June.
Paramount premiered DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D in just nine overseas territories, collecting $25.8 million from 1,623 venues and finishing No. 2 on the weekend.
The fourth and presumably final installment of the "Shrek" franchise -- that has grossed $1.166 billion overseas to date -- opened massively in Russia where the weekend provided a whopping $20 million from 700 locations. Paramount says that is the biggest opening gross ever for any film playing the market. Strong weekends were also recorded in the Ukraine, the Philippines and Singapore.
The amiable green giant in 3D will open in Australia on June 17.
Disney opened "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," producer Jerry Bruckheimer's video-game-inspired adventure fantasy, on the foreign circuit for weekend tally of $18 million from 3,552 screens. The Gemma Arterton-Jake Gyllenhaal-Ben Kingsley vehicle, which opens in the U.S. this week (May 28), finished No. 1 in 18 of its 19 debut territories. It ranks No. 3 on the weekend.
Despite attendance declines in Europe, said Disney, "Prince's" overall weekend gross was 5% above the comparable opening figure compiled by 2004's "National Treasure," which grossed a total of $173.1 million overseas. Strongest market was Spain, which provided a No. 1 tally of $3 million from 560 spots.
In the U.K., "Prince" finished No. 2 with $2 million from 468 spots. The adventure fantasy opens this week in 30 territories including such key markets as France, Korea, Russia, China, Japan and Mexico.
Fourth was Marvel Entertainment's "Iron Man 2," which continues to show real legs on the foreign circuit, collecting $13.5 million in its fourth weekend at 7,099 screens in 46 territories. Overseas cume stands at $260.8 million of which $258.6 million comes from Paramount markets. "Iron Man 2" opens in Japan on June 11.
A solid first place finish in Korea via C.J. Entertainment ($6.2 million from 584 locations) propelled DreamWorks Animation's "How To Train Your Dragon" to a $10.6 million weekend at 3,673 situations in 37 territories. Cume for the 3D animation handled overseas largely by Paramount is $234.9 million. It ranked No. 5 on the weekend.
Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D is now the fifth most popular overseas release ever (with a foreign cume of $663.8 million) and ranks No. 6 on the all-time chart for all films (with a worldwide cume of $995 million).
The Tim Burton reworking of the Lewis Carroll classic drew $7.3 million over its 12th weekend overseas from 2,624 screens in 26 markets. It remains No. 1 in Japan in its 6th round there with a $4.2 million tally from 841 sites and a huge market cume of $112.3 million.
Warner Bros. reported Monday that it passed the $1 billion-mark in overseas boxoffice action this year in less than five months, the fastest that the company has ever reached this milestone. Biggest contributors were "Sherlock Holmes2 ($262 million this year) and "Clash of the Titans" in 3D ($313 million). This is the 10th consecutive year that Warners has surpassed the $1-billion mark in foreign boxoffice.
Warner Bros./New Line's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" logged $7.3 million on the weekend at 2,670 sites in 37 markets, raising the horror sequel's international cume to $27.5 million. The same distributor's "Clash of the The Titans" in 3D drew $6.6 million weekend at 4,015 sites in 53 territories. A powerful Brazil opening bagged $4.4 million from 451 situations, with 59% of the total coming from 3D venues.
"The Back-Up Plan," the CBS-Films-produced romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, held steady overseas, grossing an estimated $4.5 million on the weekend, most of which came from 1,540 screens in 35 territories handled by Sony. Total overseas cume via all distributors stands at an estimated $19.5 million. "Back-Up Plan's" No. 4 Australia bow furnished $1.1 million from 205 situations.
Opening a resounding No. 1 in the U.K. was Vertigo Films release of "StreetDance 3D" from BBC Films, a drama starring Charlotte Rampling and featuring U.K. dance acts Diversity, George Sampson, and Flawless.
Directed by Dania Pasquini and Max Giwa, "StreetDance 3D" -- about a group of street dancers' encounter with the Royal Ballet -- drew $3.6 million in its debut at 412 screens. It also finished No. 3 in its Paris-area premier via Metropolitan at 32 locations.
Also in the U.K., India's Reliance Big Pictures' release of "Kites" opened at No. 5 with $395,754 drawn from 70 locations. The Bollywood romantic drama directed by Anurag Basu also was released on 1,800 screens in India. An edited version supervised by director Brett Ratner is set to play the U.S.
20th Century Fox's "Date Night" has drawn $50.9 million overseas boxoffice so far on the strength of a $1.7 million weekend at 1,500 situations in 33 markets. The marital action comedy costarring Steve Carell grossed about $2.8 million of its foreign total in France.
Cannes playoff lent scant opening boxoffice help in France to Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami's' "Copie Conforme" (Certified Copy), which played in the Festival's main competition section and Jean-Luc Godard's "Film Socialisme," which played in the "Un Certain Regard" section.
The Kiarostami drama starring Juliette Binoche drew a No. 9 market ranking with an estimated $300,000 drawn from 180 locations. Total market gross for "Socialisme" was not available on Sunday, but Godard's latest opened at No. 21 in the Paris area.
A bigger beneficiary of main competition playoff at Cannes was Korean director Im Sang-Soo's "The Housemaid," which placed No. 2 in its second Korea weekend via Sidus FNH at 523 locations with a tally of $3 million. Market cume after only two rounds stands at a lusty $10.7 million.
Other international cumes: Fox's "Avatar," $1.984 billion; Focus Features/Universal's "A Serious Man," $21.8 million; Summit Int'l.'s "Letters to Juliet," $3.1 million (after a $1.2 million weekend at 547 screens in five markets); Pathe's "Camping 2," $26 million over five rounds in France only; Universal's "Green Zone," $57.7 million; Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," $25.9 million (Universal territories only); MGM/Fox's "Hot Tub Time Machine," $8 million; DreamWorks/Paramount's "She's ut of My league," $10.7 million; and UGC Distribution's "Imogene McCarthery," $3.3 million over three rounds in France only.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Iron Man 2 hits $500 million worldwide!
Clash of the Titans is performing really well overseas. Considering how bad the movie was, it's legs where quite solid for a movie of its genre in most markets....much better than the likes of Watchmen.
It opened in Brazil last weekend and had a very strong $4m+ opening.

May 27-30 Weekend"Powerful opening launches in a handful of key overseas markets on the Memorial Day weekend propelled Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" to the No. 1 spot on the foreign theatrical circuit.
Based on updated weekend figures received Monday from the distributor, the swords-and-sandals-style spectacular based on Jordan Mechner's video game franchise drew $61 million -- $2 million more than previously estimated -- from 7,100 screens in 47 territories for an early international cume of $89.5 million.
Disney projects that by the end of Monday, "Prince of Persia" will deliver another $6 million offshore, pushing its international gross total to $95.5 million and its worldwide cume to $133.3 million.
Taking second place on the weekend was Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex and the City 2," which opened on the foreign circuit with an estimated $27.6 million from 3,700 screens in 17 markets. Warner's is not updating the sequel's weekend numbers until Tuesday.
In "Prince of Persia's" second round on the foreign circuit -- it just opened to $30.2 million domestically, or $37.8 million when taking into account the four-day holiday weekend -- the Jerry Bruckheimer production finished No. 1 in at least 40 of its 47 markets and helped drive Disney's 2010 foreign boxoffice revenues past the $1 billion mark for the 16th consecutive year.
It was the fastest that Disney has ever reached that benchmark. The studio joins Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox in 2010's $1 billion foreign boxoffice club, confirming that this year on the overseas circuit is exceptionally strong.
Directed by Mike Newell and costarring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley, "Prince of Persia" drew $9.7 million in its Russian launch, duking it out for the top market spot with Paramount's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D. In China, "Prince of Persia" took the top spot with $8.1 million while France contributed $5.5 million.
India made the difference in the higher "Prince of Persia" weekend update, delivering $3.3 million from 656 screens, $2 million more than earlier projected.
"This stands as the biggest (all-time) opening weekend for any Disney film in India, and the best for any Western production (in the market) during calendar 2010," said the studio. Other No. 1 bows for "Prince of Persia" were Korea ($4.3 million or 40% of overall market boxoffice), Mexico ($3.9 million at 476 locations, beating the combined results for the No. 2 through No. 10 titles) and Australia ($2.96 million from 299 locations).
"Sex and the City 2," the sequel to 2008's original based on the long-running HBO TV series, drew best in the U.K., opening No. 1 in the market with $9.2 million drawn from 529 locales, with the Friday through Sunday tally beating the original's market opening by 24%.
Other big markets for "Sex 2" included Germany, which came up with a No. 1 ranking and $7.7 million over four days due from 736 screens, 23% ahead of the original's market opening. A first place finish in Austria provided another $1 million over five days from just 88 screens.
2008's "Sex and the City" grossed a total of $263.4 million on the foreign circuit.
No. 3 on the weekend was DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D, which opened in six markets including Turkey (No. 1 with $853,000 drawn from 215 locations). Overall weekend tally was $18.5 million from 1,685 venues in 15 territories. Biggest market was Russia where, as per distributor Paramount, the gross was $12.2 million from 700 spots, the biggest opening of the "Shrek" series in the market. The overseas cume stands at $53.5 million.
Fourth was Universal' "Robin Hood," drawing $17.6 million from 7,095 situations in 56 markets, pushing its international gross total to $154.6 million. With no new openings, the Russell Crowe-Cate Blanchette vehicle directed by Ridley Scott did best in the U.K. with $2.2 million elicited from 486 spots -- an increase of 12% over last weekend -- for a 17-day market cume of $17 million.
No. 5 was Marvel Entertainment's "Iron Man 2" with a weekend gross of $6.8 million (overseas total of $281.5 million), of which all but $300,000 came from the 7,848 sites in 61 markets that Paramount is handling the Robert Downey Jr.-Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle. A Japan opening is set for June 11.
Having grossed $1.005 billion worldwide, Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D is now the fifth biggest-grossing film of all time. International tally so far is $672.9 million thanks to a $4.8 million weekend for the Tim Burton rendering of the Lewis Carroll classic.
Overseas cume for Dreamworks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," distributed by Paramount, stands at $243 million due to a $4.7 million weekend at 4,139 spots in 62 markets. A Japan bow is due in early August.
Warner's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" scared up $3.9 million on the weekend from 2,550 screens in 40 markets for an international cume of $34.1 million. The same distributor's "Clash of the Titans" in 3D drew $3.8 million from about 4,000 sites in 49 territories for an overseas gross total of $320.3 million. Most of its action came from Brazil where "Titans" was No. 1 for a second round, eliciting $2.7 million from 439 locations for a market cume of $8.6 million.
Buoyed by a No. 2 opening in Spain, Sony's "The Back-Up Plan," the CBS-Films-produced romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, drew a weekend total of $2.9 million in more than 1,280 screens in 32 markets for an overseas cume of $25.8 million.
In the U.K., Fox's comedy "Tooth Fairy" starring Dwayne Johson opened No. 5 with $1.3 million drawn from 402 locations. In France, MK2's release of director Abbas Kiarostami's "Copie Conforme" ("Certified Copy") starring Juliette Bionche (who picked up a best actress award at Cannes for her role) bounced up 10% from its opening weekend to $400,000 from 101 screens.
Other international cumes: Fox's "Date Night," $52.8 million; Universal's "Green Zone," $59.4 million; Fox's "Avatar," $1.985 billion; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $55.4 million; Fox's "My Name is Khan," $33.6 million; and Universal's "L'arnacoeur" ("Heartbreaker"), $26.9 million in France only. Nice numbers for RH. OK for SATC2
Shrek4 numbers are great. It has been released only in 15 markets (less that 1/3 markets of the first movie) and the overseas total is half of it.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Prince of Persia rules overseas!
Shrek 4 is definately doing really well, it's beaten the openings of both Shrek 3 and Shrek 2 in most markets it's opened in so far. The huge gross in Russia surely helps.
If it wasn't for Toy Story 3, this may well grow into a semi-Ice Age 3 style gross....but at this stage, i'm thinking around $450-$550m.

June 4-6 Weekend"Hot-blooded openings in 32 markets including first-place showings in France and Australia propelled Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex and the City 2" to the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit on the weekend.
The sequel to 2008's original based on the long-running HBO TV series collected a lusty $45 million from a total of 7,970 screens in 49 territories. After two frames on the foreign circuit, "Sex and the City 2" has generated a foreign gross total of about $90 million, beating its domestic cume by nearly $17 million.
Top opening market was Australia, where "Sex 2" took about 65% of the boxoffice total generated by the market's top five titles, as per the distributor. Down Under tally was $7.6 million (including previews) from 562 sites, for a per-screen average of $13,523.
In France, "Sex 2" pulled $3.9 million from 526 situations. Russia contributed the same amount from 659 screens while Japan provided $3 million from 402 locations. Biggest holdover was Germany where the No. 1 market tally was $3.6 million from 993 spots for a cume of $14.6 million. A strong second stanza in the U.K. provided a No. 1 ranking with $3.5 million from 530 locations for a market cume of $19.6 million.
Second on the weekend was Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which dropped nearly 40% from the prior weekend, bagging $37.6 million from 10,316 situations in 48 markets. Overseas gross total stands at $156.4 million over three rounds -- versus the sword-and-sandals epic's domestic cume of $59.5 million over two rounds.
The Jerry Bruckheimer production directed by Mike Newell and costarring Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton opened strongly in Brazil ($3.6 million from 329 locations) and maintained its torrid pace in sophomore stanzas in Russia ($5.5 million from 556 spots, cume $17.9 million) and in China (No. 1 with $4.4 million collected from 1,250 situations, cume $14.8 million).
Newcomers to the foreign circuit include Universal's "Get Him to the Greek," the latest from producer Judd Apatow, which opened No. 2 domestically. Directed by Nicholas Stoller and costarring Jonah Hill and Russell Brand, the comedy about getting a rock star from London to an L.A. concert date in 72 hours opened in Russia and Iceland for a combined $760,000 from 258 sites for a nearly $3,000 per-screen average.
"Marmaduke," from 20th Century Fox, premiered in 13 markets on the weekend, and collected overall $3.5 million from1,473 screens in 17 territories. The live action adaptation of the single-panel newspaper cartoon about an unruly Great Dane, which opened offshore a week before its domestic bow, has collected a foreign gross total so far of $5.1 million.
Sony opened the Screen Gems production of "Death at a Funeral" in seven markets for $1 million from 320 screens, for an overseas gross total of $1.4 million. Director Neil LaBute's comedy starring Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Zoe Saldana premiered No. 5 in the U.K. with $910,000 drawn from 288 sites.
The overall soft weekend belies the fact that grosses generally on the foreign circuit in 2010 have been dynamite so far for the Hollywood majors, up 76% over 2009 through April. Whereas domestic boxoffice hit the wall in May, dipping 11% from a year ago, international boxoffice this May is likely to be up (latest numbers confirming this are not yet available).
Twentieth Century Fox, the first studio this year to push past the $1 billion overseas boxoffice mark on Jan. 30, is expected within a fortnight to sprint the $2 billion mark. Director James Cameron's "Avatar" in 3D alone has collected more than $1.985 billion in foreign boxoffice.
Warner Bros. International said on May 24 that its roster -- notably "Sherlock Holmes" and "Clash of the Titans" in 3D -- generated more than $1 billion in foreign boxoffice. Disney, on the strength of director Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D, flew past the $1 billion milestone a week ago.
In all, despite headwinds from a month's worth of World Cup distractions, which commences Friday (June 11), and a strengthening U.S. dollar against the Euro, the first four months of 2010 point to a record boxoffice year overseas.
Fox will challenge the World Cup, the world's most-watched sporting event, this week by opening its male-oriented action tentpole "The A-Team" this coming weekend in 34 territories, including Australia, Brazil, Holland, Mexico, Russia, Korea, Sweden and Taiwan.
Third on the weekend was Universal's "Robin Hood," which continues to chug along as it enters its fourth round on the foreign circuit, drawing $9 million on the weekend from 6,500 screens in 59 markets. Director Ridley Scott's adventure costarring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchette opened No. 1 in Venezuela ($320,000 from 65 sites) and ranked in the top five in most holdover markets. Foreign gross total stands at $172 million.
No. 4 is DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D, which claimed $8.8 million from 1,986 sites in 19 territories. International cume stands at $68.4 million. The latest animation of the Shrek series drew $4.5 million from 860 spots in its third Russian round, for a market cume of $46.1 million. Paramount is releasing overseas.
Fifth was another title from DreamWorks Animation, "How to Train Your Dragon," which hoisted its overseas gross total to $253.3 million thanks to a $3.8 million weekend at 3,548 situations in 62 territories. In its third Korea round, the Paramount release drew $2.2 million from 524 spots for a market cume of $16.2 million.
Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D drew $3.5 million on the weekend from 1,875 locations in 25 markets for an overseas cume of $680.3 million (No. 5 foreign all-time; worldwide cume is $1.013 billion). Marvel Entertainment's "Iron Man 2," also distributed by Paramount in most markets, registered $3.2 million, raising its overall cume to $288.4 million, of which $279.5 came from the 61 territories handled by Paramount.
Biggest newcomer in France, ranking No. 3 in the market, was Studio Canal's release of "Le tete en friche" ("Head in the Wasteland"), directed and co-scripted by Jean Becker and costarring Gerard Depardieu and Gisele Casadesus. The drama about a Forrest Gump-type illiterate and a learned older woman drew an estimated $1.8 million from 600 screens.
Other international cumes: Sony's "The Back-Up Plan," $28.3 million; Warner Bros.' "Clash of the Titans" in 3D, $324.8 million; Fox's "Date Night," $53 million; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $56.8 million; and Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," $26.5 million (Universal territories only).
Also, Pathe's "Camping 2," $27.3 million over seven rounds in France only; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $50.7 million; Studio Canal's "L'amour c'est mieux a deux," $6.8 million in five frames in France only; Universal's "Green Zone," $61.2 million; DreamWorks/Paramount's "She's Out of My League," $12.2 million from 20 markets; and Universal's "Lanarcoeur" ("Heartbreaker"), $27.1 million over a dozen stanzas in France only. Clash OS > IM2 OS. I would say that Clash will still lead through June and some part of July till Shrek4 and TS3 is released everywhere.

BTW Fox should have crossed 2B OS total this year. I remember Avatar being at about 0.57B OS before January started that would make 1.43B from Avatar, the rest of the movies including Alvin2 and others might definitely have contributed for another 0.57B.
Any idea how good are its stats ? I mean how many times and the fastest mark for reaching 2B ?

June 11-13"Reinforcing conventional wisdom that only comedies, films appealing to women and animation withstand the World Cup's adverse boxoffice fallout, "Sex and the City 2" narrowly maintained its No. 1 ranking on the foreign theatrical circuit for the second straight weekend.
Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex 2" drew $23.7 million from about 7,900 screens in 56 markets. International gross total stands at $131.7 million in 16 days.
After just 12 days on the foreign circuit, the sequel to 2008's original based on the long-running HBO TV series flew past the $100 million mark. Research from previous World Cup years shows that from 75% to 85% of a title's overall foreign boxoffice usually is grossed within the first three-week period of a film's run before the soccer competition begins.
"Sex and the City 2" -- still 50% behind the overseas gross total of its 2008 original ($263.4 million) -- is betting on its counter-programming appeal to female moviegoers to demonstrate sufficient legs to weather World Cup distractions.
Braving Friday's opening of the month-long soccer tournament -- the world's most widely watched sports event siphoning off large chunks of male-dominated audiences of action movies -- "The A-Team" fought its way to the weekend's No. 3 spot on the foreign theatrical circuit with a disappointing $15 million drawn from 3,640 screens in 35 markets.
The quadrennial WC soccer tournament, held this year in South Africa, certainly dented boxoffice action for director Joe Carnahan's action-packed redo -- costarring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson, Sharlto Copely and Jessica Biel -- of the popular 1980s NBC TV series, which itself featured plenty of violent mayhem.
"A-Team" finished No.1 in just three markets (Taiwan, New Zealand and Puerto Rico). Top territory was Australia, where 324 locations provided $2.87 million and a No. 2 market ranking. The numbers should improve this coming weekend when distributor 20th Century Fox opens "The A-Team" in 14 more overseas markets, including France, Italy and Belgium.
Finishing No. 2 on the weekend was Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," the sword-and-sandals epic from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, which showed real boxoffice durability by generating $19.7 million in its fourth weekend on the foreign circuit at 10,211 screens in 50 markets. Overseas cume is nudging the $200 million mark ($190.3 million).
Another counter-programming beneficiary appears to be Lionsgate's "Killers," which in its second round on the foreign circuit drew an estimated $8.7 million from 2,859 locations in an unspecified number of markets. Cume so far for the action comedy costarring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher about a married couple threatened by a hit man is $30.7 million. "Killers" ranks No. 4 on the weekend.
Prodded by openings in India, China and Chile, the weekend's No. 5 title, Universal's "Robin Hood," began its fifth round on the international circuit with an estimated $7 million weekend in 60 markets for an offshore gross total to date of $183.3 million.
Skipping key European markets altogether during World Cup is Sony's "The Karate Kid," director Harald Zwart's update of director John Avildsen's 1984 original costarring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. "Kid" premiered in 10 Asian and Caribbean territories, including India, for an estimated $6 million from a total of 800 screens.
The new version, also opening in the U.S. and Canada, is coproduced by Jerry Weintraub and Will Smith, and moves the action from California to China with the actor's son, Jaden Smith, and Jackie Chan taking the leads. Leading market was Maylasia where "Kid" grossed $1.25 million from 121 sites.
Yet another title pitched to female audiences is Summit International's "Letters to Juliet," which opened No. 3 in the U.K. (after "Sex 2" and "StreetDance in 3D"). Weekend overall generated an estimated $1.8 million from just 845 spots in 12 markets, raising the melodrama's offshore cume to $7.6 million.
Marvel Entertainment's "Iron Man 2" pushed its international gross total to nearly $300 million ($295 million) thanks to a $5.3 million weekend, most of which came from the 5,260 screens in 62 markets handled by Paramount.
The two DreamWorks animation titles released by Paramount continue to generate solid numbers offshore. "Shrek Forever After" in 3D pulled $4.3 million from 1,713 locations in 19 markets for a cume of $74.3 million. "How to Train Your Dragon," also in 3D, drew $2.6 million from 3,202 spots in 62 territories. Foreign gross cume stands at $258.1 million.
Biggest-grossing local-language newcomer in France is No. 4-ranked (No. 3 in Paris) "Les meilleurs amis du monde" ("Best Friends in the World"), Gaumont's release of Julien Rambaldi's directoral debut. An acerbic comedy about a gathering of long-standing pals, "Best Friends" drew an estimated $1.4 million from 350 situations.
Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D elicited $1.3 million on the weekend, its total foreign gross to $683.3 million, $4.9 million shy of the tally of the fourth biggest offshore release of all time, Fox's "Ice Age 3." Director Timothy Burton's "Alice" has grossed $1.017 billion to date worldwide.
Other international cumes: Warners' "Clash of the Titans," $325.9 million; Sony's "The Back-Up Plan," $30.6 million; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $52 million; Universal's "Get Him to the Greek," $1.5 million in two rounds; Studio Canal's "La tete en friche" ("Head in the Wasteland"), $4 million thanks to a No. 3 second weekend in France with $1.6 million from 426 spots; Fox's "My Name is Khan," $38.1 million; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $58.2 million; Studio Canal's "L'amour c'est mieux a deux," $7.2 million in six stanzas in France; Universal's "Green Zone," $62.1 million; Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," $47.9 million; and Universal's "L'arnacoeur" ("Heartbreaker"), $27.3 million."http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... eb37975b20___________________________________________________________________________

"Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," the weekend's No. 1 domestic film, opened briskly on the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $44.8 million from 4,787 screens in 25 territories -- only a quarter of the total overseas marketplace.
Strong debuts in China and in Latin America, said Disney, "registered the biggest consolidated debut for a Pixar title from this bucket of release markets, almost doubling the (comparable) high set by 'Up.' " That 2009 title drew total foreign boxoffice of $438 million (versus $293 million domestic).
Top market for the Pixar animation threequel was Mexico, which provided $14.3 million, which Disney described as the biggest market opening ever for an animation title.
In China, "Toy Story 3" grossed $9.5 million on the weekend, also a record market debut for an animation film. Brazil came up with 3.3 million, best market opening to date for a Pixar title, while Argentina tallied $2.3 million, another record market opening.
As it has for all previous Pixar titles, Disney is releasing "Toy Story 3" in a months-long, graduated overseas rollout to capitalize on local market conditions around the world. The threequel this week bows in eight territories including Australia and India. "http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... bbc061b69d

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Toy Story 3 grosses $45m in 25 markets
14.3 from Mexico is eye-popping. Who said it did not open in all the big markets again? China and obviously Mexico are great. And it did open in 25 markets. 44.8 is great number though 600-700m OS is still far fetched.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Toy Story 3 grosses $45m in 25 markets
"Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," the weekend's front-ranked domestic film, also opened No. 1 on the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $44.8 million from 4,787 screens in 25 territories -- only a quarter of the total overseas marketplace.
Monster debuts in China and Latin America helped the film register "the biggest consolidated debut for a Pixar title from this bucket of release markets, almost doubling the (comparable) high set by ' Up,' " said Disney. That 2009 title drew total foreign boxoffice of $438 million (versus $293 million domestic).
Top market for the Pixar animation threequel was Mexico, where "Toy Story 3" generated $14.3 million, which Disney described as the biggest market opening ever for an animation title.
No. 2 on the weekend was 20th Century Fox's "The A-Team," which opened No. 1 in five of its 13 new markets, drawing $13.95 million overall from 4,911 situations in 48 territories. Top territory for director Joe Carnahan's feature update of the popular NBC TV series of the 1980s was France, where "A-Team" opened No. 1 with $3 million drawn from 652 spots. Early offshore cume stands at $34.7 million.
Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex and the City 2," which had occupied the No. 1 overseas spot for the previous two weekends, dropped to No. 3 this time with an estimated $13 million grossed from nearly 7,000 screens in 58 territories. Overseas cume for the sequel stands at $157.2 million (compared with the $263.4 million grossed overseas by 2008's "Sex and the City: The Movie").
No. 4 was "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," producer Jerry Bruckheimer's sword-and-sandals extravaganza via Disney, which drew $10.2 million in its fifth weekend at 8,680 sites in 54 markets, hoisting its offshore boxoffice total to $213.1 million.
Fifth was DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D, which registered $10 million from 2,107 venues in 20 markets. The fourth installment of the 'Shrek" franchise opened No. 1 in Australia, generating $8 million over four days from 312 situations ($11.7 million including previews) with 76% coming from 3D screens. The overseas total is $86 million.
The weekend's top five titles drew nearly $92 million, more than $20 million generated by the top five titles in 2009's comparable weekend, another indication that 2010 is -- despite the World Cup distractions and a strong U.S. dollar -- headed for another boxoffice record overseas.
Sony's remake of "The Karate Kid," costarring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (son of coproducer-actor Will Smith), opened No. 1 in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Vietnam, kicking its way to $5.4 million overall from 835 screens in 21 territories. Early international cume stands at $14.6 million.
Thanks to a solid China round ($900,000 from 1,545 sites for a 10-day market cume of $5.1 million), Universal's "Robin Hood" generated $4.3 million overall on the weekend from 5,800 sites in 56 markets for an overseas cume to date of $193.3 million. Same distributor's comedy, "Get Him to the Greek" opened No. 2 in Australia ($2.75 million from 177 spots) for an overall weekend tally of $3.2 million from 530 locales in five markets. Early overseas cume stands at $4.9 million with a U.K. bow due this week.
In France, Universal Pictures Int'l.'s release of "Fatal" is off to a brisk start, opening No. 2 and grossing an estimated $2.5 million from 470 locations. The UPI acquisition, a comedy from French director-actor-singer-comedian-TV personality Michael Youn, was filmed largely in Montreal.
The French market should experience beginning this week a theatrical attendance boost thanks to the June 26-July 2 La Fete Du Cinema during which nationwide cinema ticket prices are discounted .
Best-grossing newcomer on the weekend was Studio Canal's "Bebes" ("Babies"), which Focus Features is handling in the U.S. Director Thomas Balmes' documentary about a year in the lives of four infants from various countries opened No. 7 with $500,000 drawn from 200 screens.
Other international cumes: Marvel Ent./Paramount's "Iron Man 2," $300 million; Warner Bros.' "Clash of the Titans" in 3D, $328.4 million; Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D, $685.6 million (fifth all-time overseas); Fox's "Marmaduke," $10.9 million; Sony's "The Back-Up Plan," $33.3 million; and Universal's "Green Zone," $62.3 million.
Also, Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," $47.4 million; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $52.6 million; Studio Canal's "La tete en friche" ("Head in the Wasteland"), $5.7 million in France only; DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "How to Train Your Dragon," $260.2 million; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $59.5 million; and Gaumont's "Les meilleurs amis du monde" ("Best Friends in the World"), $2.3 million over two rounds in France only. Re: Intl. Box-Office: Toy Story 3 grosses $45m in 25 markets
Hmm, Shrek 4....Not quite as strong in Australia as i originally predicted in Australia for the first weekend (without previews). The previews certainly burned alot of its audience.
If you covert US$8m, it would be just over AU$9m in today's exchange rates....with previews it's almost AU$13.5m. Not quite as strong as SHrek 3's $10,338,331 weekend and $13,399,567 with previews......and Shrke 2's AU$13,159,869 and AU13,646,848 with previews. Though it's pretty consistent with its predecessors.

According to official estimates TS3 made only 2.3 million on 550 screens in Russia. I'm totally puzzled and have no slightest idea how to explain this disaster.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Toy Story 3 grosses $45m in 25 markets
What would a $2.3m opening normally lead to for a well-received animated film in Russia?
Pixar doesn't seem all that popular looking at BOM's totals for Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Up. Probably no need to go back before Cars since the market has grown so much. A multiplier of 4 would put TS3 near $10m, which Wall-E and Up just finished over if BOM is accurate.

Pixar doesn't seem all that popular looking at BOM's totals for Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Up. WALL-E made 5.2 mln, Bolt 4.4 mln, Up 3.88 mln and Ratatouille 3.52 mln so Toy Story 3 is well below any of them. Looks like football with 3 matches every day (15.30, 18.00 and 22.30) simply killed our box office. At very best with such soft start I see 3 multiplyer or slightly more with probably 7 million total.

Also, being the third in the series which many(i'm assuming) never watched should have played its part.

Quote: "Knight and Day," from 20th Century Fox and costarring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, opened at 2,238 screens in a dozen foreign markets on the weekend, grossing $12.6 million for a $5,630 per-screen average.
The big-budget action comedy directed by James Mangold premiered No. 1 in South Korea ($3.8 million from 501 locations) and in Russia ($3.38 million from 950 sites).
"Knight" also notched first-place rankings in Taiwan ($1 million from 135 screens), Hong Kong ($778,495 from 60 sites for a per-screen average of $12,975), Thailand, Malaysia, Trinidad and Jamaica.
The film, which opened No. 3 on the domestic circuit, was easily surpassed on the weekend by Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," which grossed $36.1 million in its second weekend on the foreign circuit at 6,278 screens in 32 markets. "Knight" opens this week in 14 additional offshore territories. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 18cb915566WEAK opening for K&D. Will have hard time cracking 200m overseas. Good for TS3.

Re: Intl. Box-Office: Toy Story 3 grosses $45m in 25 markets
Given the markets it opened in, it's not all that weak for Knight and Day actually, and it opened first in a lot of markets.... I think it's too early to rule on a final OS gross until it opens in a few of the larger markets. Let's not forget that Tom Cruise still has a lot of star power in Europe, more so than he does here in NA.
