"School holidays in French-, German- and English-speaking markets sparked weekend foreign grosses for the trio of leading 3D titles, with "Clash of the Titans" taking the top boxoffice spot with $54 million drawn from some 7,000 screens in 31 markets.

Second straight weekend in the top spot pushed the overseas gross total for Warner Bros.' update of the 1981 action fantasy to $119.2 million. 3D situations provided 65% of the offshore boxoffice. Globally, "Titans" has realized $229.7 million to date.

"Titans" opened No. 1 in Russia ($12.4 million from 919 screens), France ($7.6 million from 615 sites) and Germany ($6.4 million from 672 situations) while a first-place Korea holdover produced $4 million from 520 locations. Openings in Italy and Mexico are on tap this week.

20th Century Fox rolled out "Date Night" at 1,610 screens in 35 overseas markets simultaneously with the marital action comedy's No. 1 domestic opening.

Foreign take for the Steve Carell-Tina Fey co-starring vehicle was $7.1 million, with Australia providing $2 million of the total from 304 locations.

In second place overall was DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," which drew $23.7 million from 7,033 venues in 55 markets, with nearly 70% of the gross emanating from 3,357 3D locations. Offshore gross total stands at $148.1 million to date.

"Dragon's" only opening market was Poland, where weekend action ($790,000 from 95 spots) was dampened by the Saturday air crash that killed the Polish president and dozens of political and military leaders. (Cinemas in Poland are closed until Tuesday, said Paramount.)

The animation title's holdover in Australia produced a No. 1 ranking with $3.2 million from 358 spots, an increase of 42% from the prior weekend, with 68% of the action coming from 3D venues. "Dragon's" worldwide cume stands at $282 million.

No. 3 on the weekend with a sixth-stanza tally of $19 million drawn from 7,152 screens in 51 territories was Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," which continues to climb the all-time boxoffice charts.

Director Tim Burton's 3D re-imagining of the Lewis Carroll classic has grossed $461.5 million so far overseas, surpassing 2003's "The Matrix Reloaded" from Warner Bros. (foreign gross, $460.6 million) as the 28th most popular title ever released overseas.

Worldwide boxoffice stands at $780.8 million, making "Alice" the 29th most popular title in film history, and the fourth biggest title ever released by Disney. Openings this week are due in Spain and Japan.

No. 4 was another family-oriented title, Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," starring Emma Thompson as an amiable governess with magical powers. Total foreign gross so far is $34.6 million thanks to a $7.4 million weekend at 2,570 spots in 13 territories, the biggest of which remains the U.K. where the film's 17-day market tally is $18.1 million.

Fifth was "Shutter Island," director Martin Scorsese's drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which generated $7.3 million on the weekend via Paramount and other distributors. Foreign cume to date is $143.9 million.

"Island's" No. 1 opening in Japan provided a three-day gross of $3.5 million from 284 spots -- for a per-screen average of $12,324 -- representing the strongest market debut of any Scorsese title (46% more than 2006's "The Departed" and 128% bigger than 2004's "The Aviator").

"The Bounty Hunter," Sony's romantic comedy costarring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, boosted its foreign gross total to $42.2 million due to a $7.2 million weekend at 2,530 screens in 44 markets.

Opening France (No. 6 in Paris and environs) and other European markets was Summit Entertainment's "Remember Me," the romantic drama starring Robert Pattinson. Overall weekend take was $4.7 million from 2,302 screens in 36 territories for a foreign cume of $27 million.

"Avatar's" foreign gross total now stands at $1.971 billion after director James Cameron's blockbuster generated $3.5 million on the weekend from 1,155 screens in 22 territories.

Also coming in with $3.5 million from 636 locations in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand was Universal's "Kick-Ass," a comic-book-based saga of a nerdy teenager turned superhero. "Ass' " foreign cume stands at $12.4 million.

Universal's Iraq War drama "Green Zone," starring Matt Damon, pushed its overseas cume to $37.9 million thanks to a $2.7 million weekend at 1,800 locations in 30 markets.

Disney's "The Last Song" drew $1.4 million from 265 screens in Australia and New Zealand for an early foreign cume of $4.5 million. The Miley Cyrus vehicle has grossed $46.9 million worldwide so far.

Sony's local-language coproduction in Brazil, "As vidas de Chico Xavier" ("Chico Xavier") held the market's No. 1 spot for the second weekend in a row. The film biography of a spiritual medium and prolific author drew $2.5 million from 340 screens for a territory cume of $7.5 million.

Avatar added $1.3m from 653 in 24 markets, raising the extraordinary running total to $1.972bn.

It's a near 65% drop for Avatar compared to last weekend, but almost 1/3 of it's gross was coming from Japan and I just know it had to lose about all it's screens to Alice because all it had left were 3D (3/4 of them as of last week).

Thanks to opulent openings in Latin America and Italy, "Clash of the Titans" maintained its No. 1 boxoffice position on the foreign theatrical circuit for a third straight weekend, grossing $53.6 million from some 10,400 screens in 57 markets. Oversea gross total generated so far by the Warner Bros. release comes to $188.7 million.

Debuting at 2,207 screens in Latin American territories, including Mexico and Argentina, the 3D update of the 1981 MGM action fantasy generated $12.7 million with about half the action coming from 3D venues. In all, "Titans" premiered in nine territories on the weekend.

In Mexico, where it ranked No. 1, "Titans" drew $7.1 million from 1,343 screens, the equivalent of 80% of the market's top five collective boxoffice films, said Warners. An Italy bow drew a No. 1 ranking and $4.3 million from 603 screens.

Particularly strong holdovers for "Titans" include Russia (No. 1 with $5.2 million from 923 locations for a $20 million market cume), France ($3.6 million from 640 sites, cume $12.7 million) and Germany (No. 1 with $2.7 million from 672 screens, cume $10.2 million). A Japan opening is due Friday.

No. 2, Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," bouncing back from a $18.4 million prior weekend, took in $34 million from 7,134 screens in 53 territories. Director Tim Burton's 3D reworking of the Lewis Carroll classic, which occupied the top offshore ranking through March, was buoyed by strong weekend openings in Japan ($14 million from 654 locations) and Spain ($10.1 million from 349 screens).

A solid holdover in France ($3.9 million in the fourth weekend at 741 spots) also contributed to "Alice's" boxoffice resurgence. The film's foreign gross total has surpassed a half-billion dollars ($503.5 million), making the title one of only 21 films in history to beat that benchmark.

Worldwide, "Alice" has generated $827.5 million to rank as the 22nd biggest boxoffice hit of all time and the fourth most popular title ever released by Disney. A Brazil opening is scheduled for Friday.

The weekend's No. 3 title was DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," which boosted its overseas gross total to $176.5 million after four rounds thanks to a $15.5 million weekend at 6,582 venues in 58 markets.

Paramount, the animation title's distributor, said about 65% of the overall weekend gross came from 3D screens. Despite unseasonably warm weather in the U.K., "Dragon" managed to hold nicely with $2.1 million generated from 683 sites (80% of which were 3D screens) for a market cume of $20 million.

Opening in six European markets and finishing No. 4 was Fox's "Date Night," which grossed $8.1 million in its second weekend on the foreign circuit, playing a total of 2,796 screens in 41 territories and pushing its overseas take to $17.8 million. Best new market for the marital action comedy costarring Steve Carell and Tina Fey was Russia, where it generated $1.4 million from 442 locations.

Fifth on the weekend was "The Bounty Hunter," Sony's romantic comedy costarring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, which grossed $7 million from 2,760 sites in 51 markets, pushing its overseas gross total to $51.5 million. A No. 7 France bow delivered $1.175 million from 299 screens.

Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," starring Emma Thompson as a kindhearted governess with magical powers, delivered $5.7 million from 2,525 situations in 13 markets for an overseas cume of $44.6 million. Top market was France (via Studio Canal), where the weekend provided $1.6 million from 459 sites for a 19-day market cume of $4.1 million.

The weekend's dominant No. 1 title in France was EuropaCorp. Distribution's release of director-co-scripter Luc Besson's "Les Adventures Extraordinaries d'Adele Blanc-Sec" ("The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec"), which opened the 28th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

The feature film adaptation of a Franco-Belgian comic series written and illustrated by Jacques Tardi -- about a fearless reporter (Louise Bourgoin) pursuing a prehistoric creature in pre-World War I Paris -- opened at 650 locations for an estimated $5 million. ("Adele" also opened in Belgium over the weekend.)

"Green Zone," the Iraq War drama starring Matt Damon, hoisted its overseas gross total to $43.6 million due to a $4.6 million weekend at 1,900 situations in 31 territories. Handled by Universal and other distributors, "Zone" opened No. 5 in France via Studio Canal (but No. 2 in Paris and suburbs) for $2.4 million registered from 450 screens.

Director Martin Scorsese's drama "Shutter Island," handled by Paramount and other distributors, claimed $4.5 million on the weekend, raising its total offshore take to $154 million. The 50 markets Paramount is handling provided $4.1 million of the weekend gross from 1,982 sites. "Shutter's" Japan cume over two rounds stands at $9 million.

No. 1 title in the U.K. was "Dear John," Paramount's release of director Lasse Hallstrom's version of the Nicholas Sparks novel about the romance of a soldier and a college student. Opening tally at 403 sites was $3.2 million.

Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," which opened domestically on the weekend but has been playing for 17 days on the foreign circuit, drew $2.6 million from 675 screens in four territories handled by Universal for an early cume of $17.4 million. Openings in Germany, Austria and French-speaking Switzerland are due by next weekend.

No. 1 in Brazil remained Sony's local-language co-production "As Vidas de Chico Xavier" ("Chico Xavier"), the film biography of a nationally revered spiritual medium and author. The film's third weekend at 327 screens generated $1.8 million, lifting its market cume to $10.6 million.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Avatar," $1.972 billion over 18 weeks of release; Sony's "The Book of Eli," $24.1 million (Sony territories only); Universal's "It's Complicated," $109 million; Pathe's "Tout ce qui Brille" ("All that Glitters"), $8.5 million in France only; Universal's "L'arnacoeur" ("Heartbreaker"), $21.5 million in France only; Sony's "Cemetery Junction," opened the U.K. with $1 million drawn from 342 screens; and UGC's "Les Invites de mon Pere" ("My Father's Guest"), $4.7 million in France only.

"Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 2," this year's opening summer tentpole, lit up the foreign theatrical circuit with a five-day overseas launch bagging $100.2 million from 6,764 sites in 53 markets for a sparkling per-screen average of $14,814.

Distributor Paramount Pictures International says the sequel to 2008's Marvel original starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow finished No. 1 in 52 of the opening territories, beating "Iron Man's" opening overall numbers by 26% in local currencies.

Paramount said "'Iron Man 2" beat the original's openings in every market "on a local currency like-for-like basis."

The U.K. opening round furnished $12.2 million from 528 venues, 49% ahead of the "Iron Man" opening gross (excluding $1.4 million in preview grosses) in pound sterling, said Paramount. In Korea, the opening launch generated $10.8 million from 855 situations, 79% ahead of the comparable " Iron Man" figure.

Australia produced $8.8 million from 251 screens, exceeding the "Iron Man" opening in the market by 52%, while France came up with $8.2 million from 722 locations, 21% more than "Iron Man's" market bow.

In Russia, the tally was $8.2 million from 650 spots, 89% more than the comparable "Iron Man" figure, making the sequel the largest market opening for a live action film distributed by Paramount.

Separately, IMAX Corp. reported that "Iron Man 2's" opening weekend grossed $2.25 million at 48 IMAX overseas venues -- for a per-screen average of $46,875 -- thus establishing a boxoffice record for a 2D title at IMAX foreign situations. Previous record holder was 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which opened to $2.1 million.

The original "Iron Man" rolled up a total foreign gross of $265 million and another $318.3 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Paramount rushed "Iron Man 2" into the foreign market a week before the film's domestic bow on May 7 to provide the film longer theatrical playing time before the month-long World Cup begins in South Africa on June 11. The most widely watched sports event in the world, the soccer tournament draws a huge male viewership, a key demo for the "Iron Man" sequel and many other summer tentpoles."

The original "Iron Man" rolled up a total foreign gross of $265 million and another $318.3 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Paramount rushed "Iron Man 2" into the foreign market a week before the film's domestic bow on May 7 to provide the film longer theatrical playing time before the monthlong World Cup begins in South Africa on June 11. The most widely watched sports event in the world, the soccer tournament draws a huge male viewership, a key demo for the "Iron Man" sequel and many other summer tentpoles.

As it also handled the original "Iron Man," Paramount is distributing the sequel. But "Iron Man 2" represents the first Marvel theatrical release since Disney acquired the company last year. This week, "Iron Man 2" opens in seven territories including China, India and Germany. A Japan bow is set for June 11.

No. 2 on the weekend was Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," which on the basis of its $591 million overseas cume after nine rounds on the foreign circuit, is the 13th biggest-grossing title ever released abroad. Worldwide, director Tim Burton's 3D reworking of the Lewis Carroll classic has amassed $920.7 million, making "Alice" the 12th biggest grosser of all time.

Weekend tally was $22.5 million from 6,930 screens in 54 markets. Biggest contributor was Japan in the throes of the Golden Week holiday period ($12.7 million drawn from 859 sites for a $14,784 per-screen average).

Third was Warner Bros.' "Clash of the Titans" in 3D, which drew $18.4 million in its fifth weekend at 8,000 screens in 61 markets. Overseas cume stands at $273.8 million.

Fourth was DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," generating $6.7 million from 5,687 situations in 60 markets. Distributor Paramount says the overseas gross total has surpassed $200 million ($203 million).

No. 5 is the French-language comedy, "Camping 2," which in France alone looks to tally $6.2 million in its second round at 781 sites, enough for a No. 2 ranking. Market cume is $16.8 million. The Pathe release is the sequel to 2006's "Camping," which grossed more than $40 million in France.

20th Century Fox's "Date Night" came in with $4 million from 2,609 screens in 48 markets, raising the offshore cume for the marital action comedy costarring Steve Carell and Tina Fey to $35 million. "The Last Song," Disney's drama starring Miley Cyrus, opened No. 2 in Germany at 224 sites, and drew $3.4 million overall on the weekend, lifting its overseas cume to $11.2 million.

"The Bounty Hunter," Sony's comedy with Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, raised its offshore gross total to $61.5 million thanks to a $2.4 million weekend at 1,950 sites in 55 markets. Director Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" hoisted its foreign cume to $163.7 million after a $2 million weekend via Paramount and other distributors. Portion of the cume from Paramount-handled territories is $121.5 million.

Opening No. 4 in France is ARP Selection's "Comme les 5 doigts de la main," director Alexandre Arcady's action-drama about five brothers versus the Marseilles mob. Opening gross was $1.3 million from 350 screens.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Avatar," $1.977 billion; Sony's "The Back-Up Plan," $2 million; Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," estimated $34 million; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $49.4 million; Sony's "Las Vidas de Chico Xavier," $15 million in Brazil only; Universal's "Green Zone," $48.9 million; EuropaCorp. Distribution's "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec," $9 million in France only; Fox's "Fantastic Mr. Fox," $24.7 million; Ad Vitam Distribution's "Mammuth," $2.6 million in two rounds in France only; and Universal's "L'arnacoeur," $24.3 million in France only, the market's biggest local language film of 2010. Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Iron Man 2 at $194 million overseas!
"Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 2" ruled the foreign theatrical circuit over the weekend for the second straight stanza, taking the No. 1 spot with $57.2 million from 10,774 locations in 61 markets, and hoisting its accumulated overseas boxoffice total to $194 million.

That puts the sequel to 2008's "Iron Man" $71 million shy of the original's total foreign gross after only 12 days of international play (it began its offshore run on April 28). Of the cume so far, $190.3 million was derived from territories handled by Paramount International, which is handling "Iron Man 2" costarring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow in most offshore markets.

"Iron Man 2" got a huge weekend boost from its China opening where the Jon Favreau-directed sequel drew $7.3 million from about 3,000 situations.

Paramount reports the China opening tally is a full 209% better than "Iron Man's" comparable opening market figure. In Germany and Austria, "Iron Man 2" drew a combined opening tally of $3.88 million, sufficient for a No. 1 finish in each market.

"Iron Man 2" also finished No. 1 in Korea ($4.7 million from 834 locations for a market cume of $22 million), Australia, Turkey, Russia, Brazil, Italy and Mexico.

In France, the sequel snared $4 million from 655 locations, down 55% from the opener, but far more than enough to rank No. 1 in the market. In the U.K., "Iron Man 2" took the top spot with $4.9 million drawn from 426 spots (down 53% from the opener) for a market cume of $23 million.

Paramount opened "Iron Man 2" a week before its domestic bow over the weekend to maximize foreign playtime before the June 11-July 11 World Cup soccer tournament eats into theatrical audiences, especially those for action titles. As it also handled the original, Paramount is distributing the sequel. But "Iron Man 2" is the first Marvel theatrical release since Disney acquired the company last year.

Competition with "Iron Man 2" for the top overseas spot this coming weekend will heat up considerably as Universal opens its summer tentpole, director Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" starring Russell Crowe, in some 56 markets. After making its debut at the International Festival de Cannes on May 12, "Hood" begins its foreign run in France and Russia plus four other territories. (The film's domestic run begins May 14.)

This won't even crack 650 million worldwide.

$320m domestically and $290+m overseas. $610+m worldwide.

VERY DISAPPOINTING boxoffice. They spent $170 million budget and $100 million marketing. Not that good of a performance.

You kiddin' me? You expect that coming off a $57 million OS weekend and standing at $194 million OS it will just make $100 million more OS. And a 2.4 multiplier domestically?! WTF?

It will easily pass $650 million worldwide.

Of the cume so far, $190.3 million was derived from territories handled by Paramount International, which is handling "Iron man 2" costarring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow in most offshore markets.

Combined with its $133.6 million opening domestic tally, "Iron Man 2" has generated a worldwide gross to date of $327.6 million.

"Iron Man 2" got a huge weekend boost from its China opening where the Jon Favreau-directed sequel drew $7.3 million from about 3,000 situations.

Paramount reports the China opening tally is a full 209% better than "Iron Man's" comparable opening market figure. In Germany and Austria (via local distributor Concorde), "Iron Man 2" drew a combined opening tally of $3.88 million, sufficient for a No. 1 finish in each market.

"Iron Man 2" also finished No. 1 in Korea ($4.7 million from 834 locations for a market cume of $22 million), Australia, Turkey, Russia, Brazil, Italy and Mexico.

In France, the sequel snared $4 million from 655 locations, down 55% from the opener but far more than enough to rank No. 1 in the market. In the U.K., "Iron Man 2" took the top spot with $4.9 million drawn from 426 spots (down 53% from the opener) for a market cume of $23 million.

After making its debut at the International Festival du Cannes on May 12, "Hood" begins its foreign run in France and Russia plus four other territories. (The film's domestic run begins May 14.)

Finishing second on the weekend was Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," which collected $12.5 million from 5,946 situations in 54 markets. Overseas cume for director Tim Burton's 3D reworking of the Lewis Carroll classic stands at 4629.5 million over 10 rounds, making "Alice" the tenth biggest overseas boxoffice release ever.

A fourth weekend in Japan secured $5 million, raising the market total to $89 million. "Alice's" worldwide cume is $960.3 million, placing the title No. 8 on the all-time top boxoffice chart.

No. 3 on the weekend was Warner Bros.' "Clash of the Titans," which has accumulated an overseas gross of $295.1 million -- of which $192 million derives from 3D venues -- after a $8.8 million weekend at more than 7,200 screens in 61 markets.

No. 4 was Warners/New Line Cinema's "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the latest in the 26-year-old horror franchise featuring serial killer Freddy Krueger. Openings in Russia (via Karo Premier, which drew $3.2 million from 525 locations), the U.K. (No. 2 in the market with $2.2 million from 354 spots) Brazil and Argentina generated $6.7 million from some 1,200 screens.

Fifth was 20th Century Fox's "Date Night," which had a decent bow in Italy ($764,000 from 224 locations) and drew $4.7 million overall on the weekend from 2,750 screens in 50 territories. The marital action comedy costarring Steve Carell and Tina Fey has grossed a total of $41.7 million so far overseas. Openings are due this week in four markets, including France.

DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" garnered, via Paramount, $4.5 million on the weekend from 4,249 screens in 60 markets, boosting its overseas cume to $212 million.

Sony's "The Back-Up Plan," the romantic comedy with Jennifer Lopez, opened in Russia and the U.K. (where it ranked fifth with $1.075 million drawn from 294 locations) and drew $4.3 million overall from 1,360 spots in 24 markets. Cume stands at $6.6 million.

Hit French comedy, "Camping 2," drew $4.2 million from 782 sites in France only, raising its market cume to a solid $22.2 million. The Pathe release, which finished No. 2 in the market after "Iron Man 2," is the sequel to 2006's "Camping," which grossed more than $40 million in France.

New to the France market were "L'amour, c'est mieu a deux," a romantic comedy from co-directors Dominique Farrugia and Arnaud Lemort. The Studio Canal release drew a No. 3 ranking in the market, collecting $2.7 million from 370 screens.

Another market opener was UGC's "Imogene McCarthery" from co-directors Alexandre Charlot and Franck Magnier. The drama starring Lambert Wilson collected a No. 4 market slot with $2 million from 400 situations.

Other international cumes: Fox's "Avatar," $1.98 billion; Sony's "The Bounty Hunter," $64.5 million; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $52 million; EuropaCorp. Distribution's "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec," $10.5 million over four frames in France only; and Universal's "Green Zone," $51.4 million of which $38 million came from Universal-handled territories.

Also, Paramount and other distributors' "Shutter Island," $166.5 million ($124 million from Paramount-handled territories); MGM/Fox's "Hot Tub Time Machine," $4.9 million (after a No. 3 U.K. opening with $1.5 million drawn from 392 spots; Ad Vitam Distribution's "Mammuth," $4 million over three stanzas in France only; Lionsgate/Universal's "Kick-Ass," $25.3 million from Universal-handled territories only; Universal's "L'arnacoeur," $25.5 million over eight rounds in France, the market's top-grossing local language title of 2010. I think 315 overeas and 350-390 domestic 665 looks very good and 700 is certainly possible with some good holds.

Robin Hood - $74 million OS
Alice in Wonderland - $649.5 million OS

Heh, you know, it looks like Clash of the Titans could end up with a higher overseas total than all live action May releases. It's looking at $300+ million, a mark that Robin Hood will miss and Iron Man 2 will only barely crack.

SATC 1 made $262.6 overseas. Given that the sequel is set overseas, it could potentially do $300 m + as well...

That means around $245 million overseas.

Looks like a $31 million OS weekend for Iron Man 2. That's solid. It'll pass the first film's internationasl total next weekend and still has a couple of markets left I think. We're loking at a worldwide total of $610-630 million.

Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Robin Hood #1, Iron Man 2 passes $450m WW
"After premiering May 12 at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, where critics gave the Universal epic largely muted reviews, "Robin Hood" conquered the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $74 million from 6,944 screens in 56 markets.

Director Ridley Scott's reimagining of the Crusades-era outlaw costarring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett opened a resounding No. 1 on the weekend overall, making it Universal's second biggest international opening weekend ever behind the $84.3 million debut gross compiled by director Peter Jackson's 2005 "King Kong" remake.

Premiering in the top spot in 52 of its 56 markets, "Robin Hood" drew a resounding $8.1 million in the U.K. from 539 spots, registering a 42% market share. In France, the boxoffice market share was 30% with $6.8 million elicited from 648 locations. The Germany bow generated $6.4 million from 716 screens for a 31% market share.

Italy came up with $6.1 million from 496 locations, the biggest opening weekend market gross for any Universal title ever. In Russia, where the gross was $5.8 million from 610 sites, it was Universal's fourth-largest market opening. Spain provided $4.4 million from 384 situations (43% of the market) and Australia generated $5.2 million from 271 sites (48%).

With its costly production budget, reportedly well above $200 million, it's vital that "Robin Hood" perform at least as strongly overseas as "Gladiator." The 2000 Scott-Crowe-teamed Roman epic grossed $460.6 million worldwide with $272.9 million coming from foreign playoff.

Universal said "Robin Hood's" opening overseas gross beat "Gladiator's" comparable figure ($43.1 million) by a full 72%.

Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 2" is second on the weekend, grossing $31 million in its third weekend of foreign play, raising its offshore gross total to date to $245 million.

Paramount is handling the Robert Downey Jr.-Gwyneth Paltrow-costarring sequel to the 2008 original in 61 markets at 9,857 screens, which provided a weekend total of $28.3 million for a cume of $238.2 million.

"Iron Man 2" scored especially well in China where it grossed an estimated $4.4 million from 3,000 situations for a market cume of $16.7 million
. In France, the weekend registered $3.3 million from 637 screens for a cume of $17.7 million. Australia registered a No. 2 ranking thanks to $2.3 million from 254 spots for a cume of $18.9 million.

"Iron Man 2" finished No. 2 in the U.K. in its third stanza, with $2.3 million drawn from 496 locations for a cume of $27 million. In Korea, the cume reached $25.4 million thanks to a $2.1 million weekend at 522 situations.

Third on the weekend was Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," which registered an 11th weekend tally of $10.7 million from 3,861 locations in 55 markets, with Japan, Brazil, Spain and Chile driving the boxoffice action.

The 3D reworking of the Lewis Carroll classic from director -- and Cannes Festival jury president -- Tim Burton was No. 1 in Japan in its fifth weekend, scoring $4.7 million from 877 spots and pushing its market cume to $100 million. A Chile opening produced $1.1 million, a remarkably large figure from this market. Overseas cume stands at $649 million.

"Alice" now ranks as the seventh biggest international boxoffice hit ever released. With its worldwide gross of $980.5 million, "Alice" ranks as the sixth biggest boxoffice success of all time.

No. 4 was Warner Bros./New Line's "A Nightmare on Elm Street," which had solid openings in France (No. 4 in the market with $1.5 million derived from 245 locations) and in Mexico (No. 3 with $1.16 million from 387 sites). Weekend overall generated $7.8 million from some 2,300 screens in 24 markets pushing the horror sequel's early international cume to $17 million.

Fifth was "The Back-Up Plan," the CBS-Films-produced romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, which grossed $5.2 million on the weekend, of which $3.9 million came from 1,580 screens in 31 territories handled by Sony. Overall international cume stands at $14.1 million.

Twentieth Century Fox's "Date Night" had a decent opening in France ($1.77 million from 331 locations) and generated $5.08 million on the weekend overall from 2,588 sites in 40 territories. The overseas gross total for marital action comedy with Steve Carell and Tina Fey is $48.3 million.

Warner Bros.' "Clash of the Titans" pushed its foreign gross total past the $300-million mark ($303.1 million) thanks to a $4.3 million weekend tally generated from some 5,300 screens in 58 markets. "Green Zone," Universal's Iraq war drama starring Matt Damon, opened No. 2 in Japan, grossing $2.3 million from 260 locations. Overall weekend tally was $3 million from 560 sites in 20 territories for an international cume of $55.4 million.

Finishing No. 2 in its fourth France weekend was Pathe's release of "Camping 2," which registered $2.7 million from 750 situations. Market cume for the French-language comedy, the sequel to 2006's "Camping," totals $25 million.
