Total foreign take by director James Cameron's 3D blockbuster now stands at $1.844 billion -- thus surpassing the $1.843-billion worldwide boxoffice total rolled up by the director's 1997 former record holder, "Titanic." "Avatar's" worldwide cume is $2.550 billion. To date, its foreign gross is more than two-and-a-half times its domestic cume of $707 million.

director Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" grossed $19 million from 20 territories on the weekend for an early foreign cume of $34 million

Also grossing $19 million on the weekend -- and also tied for No. 2 -- was Fox's adventure fantasy "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," which played 6,350 screens in 65 territories for a foreign cume to date of $95.4 million.

"The Wolfman," at $63.3 million with five more markets to play including Japan on April 22.

A close No. 4 is Warner Bros. romantic comedy "Valentine's Day," International cume stands at $87.4 million.

Finishing fifth was Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," a foreign cume to date of $143 million.

"The Lovely Bones" garnered $6.3 million on the weekend from a total of 3,328 screens in 34 territories. Foreign cume to date is $35 million.

Warner's "Sherlock Homes" upped its foreign cume to $273.7 million. Same distributor's "Invictus" for a foreign cume to date of $71.1 million.

"The Blind Side," (Foreign cume stands at $3.8 million.)

Paramount's "The Crazies," generating $1.9 million from 345 sites. Opening No. 18 in the U.K. was Sony's release of the CBS Films co-production, "Extraordinary Measures," a medical drama with Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser. Premier weekend came up with $215,000 from 258 screens.

"It's Complicated," ($90.2 million)

Sony's durable family-oriented title, "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $112.5 million.

Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air" starring George Clooney, which has grossed a total of $68.5 million thus far overseas.

Filmauro's "Genitori & Figli: Agitare bene prima dell'uso," director Giovannie Veronesi's comedy about generational frictions between parents and offspring. Debut stanza at 397 spots produced an estimated $2.2 million

A local-language newcomer in France was EuropaCorp. Distribution's "Coursier" ("Motorcycle Courier"), director Herve Renoh's comedy about a hard-pressed deliveryman and his girlfriend. Opener at 250 screens generated an estimated $1.1 million and a No. 9 ranking. Third in the market in its second round was "Le Mac" ("The Pimp"), a comedy from director Pascal Bourdiaux, which drew an estimated $2.6 million from 465 locations for a France-only cume of $7.5 million.

34M in 2 weeks for Shutter Island. Looks like 150M and Departed will be difficult on the Overseas circuit. It made double the money domestically. Though it has about 50 more markets to open with so I guess it can pass 100M for sure. At this point I would say 130M is a safe bet

"Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" seized the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit over the weekend, grossing an estimated $94 million in its opening round at 5,600 sites in 40 territories for a per-screen average of $16,786.

Director Tim Burton's 3D re-imagining of the Lewis Carroll classic dominated all markets played, and handily displaced director James Cameron's "Avatar," which had been No. 1 offshore for 11 consecutive weeks.

For its part, "Avatar" generated another $21.7 million on the weekend from 5,622 screens in 68 markets, for a record overseas gross total to date of $1.883 billion.

Worldwide, "Avatar" has amassed $2.604 billion. With more than 1,000 3D venues that had been playing the film usurped by "Alice," "Avatar" finished a distant No. 2 on the weekend.

According to Disney, "Alice," with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, logged the biggest international opening weekend ever for any title launched in the January-April period.

Combined with its No. 1 opening tally in the U.S. and Canada, "Alice" grossed a total of $210.3 million on the weekend. The film's offshore start is the best of any of director Burton's films, nearly tripling the opening of his previous best, 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (also costarring Depp and Bonham Carter).

The "Alice" foreign bow was the second best foreign opening ever for Disney behind that of 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," which grossed $216 million from 102 territories.

"Alice's" opening was also the biggest opening launch of any title this year. (20th Century Fox opened "Avatar" on Dec. 20.) It opened at about 2,500 3D situations, which threw off 70% of the opening weekend revenue.

The international opening weekend was especially impressive in that "Alice" premiered, said Disney, at "only 60% of the international marketplace." Such key territories as France and China won't open the picture until later this month with debuts in Spain, Japan and Brazil due next month.

Top market for "Alice" was the U.K. where it generated $16.8 million from 532 screens, the third biggest opening tally for any Disney film released in the territory. In Italy, "Alice" was the second biggest opening of all time (behind 2007's "Spider-Man 3") with $13.9 million drawn from 533 sites for a whopping $26,079 per-screen average.

The Russian opening produced $12.3 million from 655 venues, the biggest opening of any Disney title in the market. Australia contributed $9.2 million from 345 locations while Mexico served up $7.5 million from 662 situations, again the biggest Disney opening in the market.

No. 3 was director Martin Scorsese's drama "Shutter Island," which grossed $17 million on the weekend from 20 markets being handled by Paramount and other distributors. Overseas cume stands at $57 million with the worldwide tally clocking in at $152.8 million in three rounds.

France leads the way with the Leonardo Di Caprio vehicle taking the No. 1 market spot with $4 million drawn from 540 locations for a market cume of $12.8 million. Worldwide, "Shutter Island" has grossed $152.8 million in three rounds.

No. 4 was Fox's adventure fantasy "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief," which grabbed $9.3 million from 5,608 screens in 64 markets for an overseas cume of $110.6 million. Finishing fifth was Warner Bros.' comedy "Valentine's Day," which romanced $5.1 million from 3,700 sites in 59 markets for a foreign gross total to date of $96.2 million.

The Clint Eastwood-directed drama "Invictus" pushed its foreign cume to $79.3 million thanks to a $4.6 million weekend playing 2,670 screens in 42 markets. Also from Warner Bros., "Sherlock Holmes" hoisted its cume to $283.2 million due to a $4.4 million weekend at 2,500 sites in 42 territories.

Universal's "The Wolfman" with five territories yet to play grossed an estimated $4.2 million on the weekend from 4,400 locations in 57 territories, pushing its overseas cume to $71 million.

Drawing a total of $3.8 million was the BBC Films coproduction "The Men Who Stare at Goats" costarring George Clooney, which opened in Spain and Australia via Sony ($2.3 million from 286 screens) and premiered No. 4 in Germany via Kinowelt (estimated $1.5 million from 304 situations).

DreamWorks/Paramount's "The Lovely Bones" from director Peter Jackson shoved its overseas gross total to $41.6 million thanks to a $3.6 million weekend from 2,724 situations in 37 markets. Paramount's "Up In The Air" with George Clooney has grossed $72.6 million on the foreign circuit so far thanks to a $2.4 million weekend from 1,599 locations in 56 territories.

Grossing $2.3 million from 1,360 situations in 38 markets was Universal's romantic comedy "It's Complicated." With a dozen more markets still to play, the Meryl Streep vehicle has rolled up a foreign cume of $94.3 million to date.

In France, Pathe opened Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" (titled simply "The Ghost" in France) in the No. 2 market slot with an estimated $2.1 million drawn from 400 screens.

Making its debut at No. 9 is La Fabrique de Films' release "Thelma, Louise and Chantal," director-writer Benoit Petre's comedy costarring Janes Birkin about three middle-aged women swapping tales while on the road (not to be confused with Ridley Scott's 1991 title costarring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis). Weekend gross was an estimated $850,000 from 240 locations.

Other international cumes: Fox's "My Name Is Khan," $31.1 million from a dozen markets; Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $114.6 million; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $38 million; ARP Distributions "Le Mac" ("The Pimp"), $9.4 million in France only; Paramount's "The Crazies," $3.9 million over two rounds in the U.K. only; Fox's "Hot Summer Days," $18.2 million; Sony's "Did You Hear about the Morgans?," $49.5 million; Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," $220.8 million; Warner's "The Blind Side," $7.1 million from eight markets; and Fox's "Fantastic Mr. Fox," $22.7 million."

Percy dropped hard this weekend overseas. It went from 19 million last weekend to 9 million. Will end up with 120-130 million overseas.

And yet $110+ million OS is very good for it since it is far from over. Fox should greenlight a sequel.

what do u mean? I think it has released in pretty much all the major markets except China. Maybe some small countries are left but won't add much. I wonder how it did in its 2nd weekend in Japan. I really want this to do 20+ million there.

"It's early spring, and Lewis Carroll thrives.

Director Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D ruled the foreign theatrical universe over the weekend for an exceptionally strong second stanza -- down just 24% from its opening round -- with an estimated $76 million in boxoffice draw from 6,621 screens in 48 markets.

The film's No. 1 performance in all territories played, says Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International, is "the biggest second weekend ever realized for any title (released) during the winter-spring corridor (January-April) in industry history."

"Alice" has "expanded the commercial possibilities of this (usually quiescent boxoffice) period in a whole new way," said David Kornblum, Disney's vp of international theatrical sales and distribution.

With 35% of the international market -- including France, China, Spain, Japan and Brazil -- yet to play, "Alice" has rolled up a total overseas gross of $221 million, of which nearly 70% ($152 million) originated in 3D venues. Its worldwide tally is $429.6 million.

Double-digit weekend grosses came out of the U.K. ($10.8 million from 755 sites for a market cume of $34 million) and Russia ($10.6 million from 576 screens, cume $32.2 million).

Italy weighed in with $9.3 million from 730 situations for a cume of $28.7 million while Germany produced $7.1 million from 486 locales for a cume of $16.4 million. "Alice's" weekend results in Australia, Mexico and Korea were also notably strong.

No. 2 on the weekend was "Shutter Island," which grossed an estimated $19.2 million from 43 markets, which were all, except five (Spain, Italy, Russia, German and Austria), handled by Paramount. Director Martin Scorsese's drama has rolled up a foreign boxoffice cume of $82 million, of which $52.3 million stems from Paramount's territories. Worldwide total is $190 million.

Weekend openings in 18 territories were led by "Shutter Island's" No. 2 opening in the U.K., where the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle generated $3.5 million from 417 spots. A No. 1 Brazil debut came up with $1.1 million from 158 screens. In three rounds in France, "Shutter Island" has grossed $17.3 million.

Third was 20th Century Fox's "Avatar," which grossed $17 million from about 4,000 screens in 69 markets, pushing the film's record-breaking overseas cume to $1.914 billion after 13 rounds in release. Worldwide, director James Cameron's 3D spectacle has rolled up a cume of $2.644 billion. Biggest weekend market was Japan, where "Avatar" came away with $3.1 million from 450 screens for a market total of $155.8 million.

No. 4 was " "Green Zone," which battled its way to an estimated $9.7 million in its overseas opening at 1,562 screens in 14 markets. Leading was the U.K., where Universal's Iraq War thriller directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Matt Damon premiered at No. 3 in the market with a $3.3 million take from 419 situations. In Australia, the No. 2 debut gross was $1.9 million from 212 locations.

Summit Entertainment's "Remember Me" opened in Australia via Hoyts day-and-date with its domestic bow, and finished ninth in the market with an estimated $388,000 elicited from 173 situations. On the weekend overall, the romantic drama starring Robert Pattinson played nine markets, and drew an estimated $1.6 million from 530 locations.

No. 5 on the weekend was Fox's "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief," which pushed its foreign gross total to $120.5 million thanks to a $6.3 million weekend at 4,781 screens in 59 territories. An Italy premiere generated $1.77 million from 323 locations.

Oscar-related films on the foreign circuit included best picture winner "The Hurt Locker," which finished via Roadshow at No. 6 in Australia with an estimated $580,000 from 71 spots for a market cume of $2.5 million over four rounds.

Warner Bros.' "The Blind Side," which landed a best actress Oscar for Sandra Bullock, drew $1.8 million on the weekend from 369 screens in 11 markets for an overseas cume to date of $10.3 million. In Paris and its suburbs, "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" bumped up into the No. 7 spot in its second round via ARP.

Fox's "Crazy Heart," which won two Academy Awards, including a best actor nod to Jeff Bridges, drew $882,000 from 459 screens in 21 markets for an early international cume of $3.9 million.

Due to a solid Japan opening ($4.6 million from 444 sites), Warners' "Sherlock Holmes" generated a weekend total of $6.1 million from 2,100 locations in 39 markets. Overseas cume stands at $291 million. The same distributor's romantic comedy, "Valentine's Day," crossed the $100-million international gross mark ($101 million) thanks to a $3.5 million weekend at 3,500 screens in 58 markets.

Foreign language titles handled by the majors overseas included Fox's "Pajaros de Papel" ("Paper Birds"), director Emilio Aragon's Post-Civil War drama about a group of poor vaudevillians, which opened No. 7 in Spain with an estimated $790,000 drawn from 230 spots.

Universal opened "Teufelskicker" ("Devil's Kickers"), director Granz Henma's family drama about the personal trials of a German soccer player, in German-speaking Europe (Germany, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland) for an estimated $1 million from 540 locations.

Fox's "My Name Is Khan," which has rolled up a foreign cume of $35.8 million, has become the biggest-grossing Bollywood title at the U.K. boxoffice, drawing more than $3.8 million in the territory.

In France, a couple of local-language newcomers placed within the top five. Gaumont's "La Rafle" ("The Roundup"), director Roselyn Bosch's historical drama about the French police's collaboration with the Nazis, opened No. 2 in the market, and drew $4.5 million from 500 locations. Diaphana Films' release of "Piece Montee," director Denys Granier-Deferre's romantic comedy costarring Danielle Darrieux, opened No. 5 with $1.3 million derived from 450 spots.

Other international cumes: Universal's "The Wolfman," $74 million; Warners' "Invictus," $83.5 million; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $38.6 million; ARP Distribution's "Le Mac" ("The Pimp"), $10.6 million over four rounds in France only; Sony's "The Men Who Stare At Goats," $5.5 million in four markets only; Lionsgate's "Brothers," $10 million; Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," $222 million; Universal's "It's Complicated," $98 million; Lionsgate's "Daybreakers," $14.8 million; Sony's "Did You hear About the Morgans?," $50.9 million; Fox's 'Hot Summer Days," $19.4 million; Lionsgate's "Dear John," $5.6 million; Sony's "Extraordinary Measures," $1.2 million; Showbox's "The Secret Reunion," estimated $35 million in Korea only; Lionsgate's "The Spy Next Door," $16 million; Paramount's "The Lovely Bones," $45 million; and Sony's "Legion," $12.5 million.

Post Re: Intl. Box-Office - Alice at $221m OS, Holmes close to $300m
Very good holds in the major markets. $500m looks like a lock with some of the majors still to open. At this rate i'm thinking $325m to $350m Domestic + $550m to $600m Overseas = $875m minimum to $950m Worldwide.

It's still got another 3 weeks until Clash of the Titans opens, that movie is also headed for at least $500m WW, very good start to the year. Clash of the TItans will surely play much better than Watchment which floundered after opening, I see Clash more in line with 300 (that movie grossed almost $250m OS but was back in 2007 without 3D). This one looks good for at least $300m overseas.

How To Train Your Dragon takes over the #1 spot in Singapore with huge previews on just 23 cinemas. It sent Alice In Wonderland crashing over 50% after a massive hold in its 2nd week.

1 - How to Train Your Dragon UIP $514,205 - 23 - $22,357 $514,205 -

Quote:
Do you realize that just two films have dominated the No. 1 spot on the foreign theatrical circuit over the entire first quarter of 2010?

Overseas hunger for spectacle in 3D propelled 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" to the top spot for nine consecutive weeks this year, through Feb. 28.

Then audiences shifted to Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," which has rounded out the rest of the quarter with its fourth straight No. 1 finish.

By the end of March 2009, eight films ranging from DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" to Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" took their turns in the lofty No. 1 slot overseas.

Director Tim Burton's 3D version of "Alice" drew $46 million on the weekend from 7,170 screens in 51 markets for an offshore cume of $363 million. The worldwide gross total stands at $656.1 million.

"Alice" was challenged by the Paramount's release of DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," which drew $31 million from 5,594 locations in 35 markets, of which 32 are new. (Last weekend's debuts were in Russia, the Ukraine and Romania.)

Overseas cume for the 3D animation about a lonely Viking teenager who befriends a giant dragon stands at $42 million. The worldwide tally is $85.3 million. Although "Dragon" opened No. 1 domestically, it will finish in the No. 2 spot behind "Alice" on the foreign circuit.

Biggest boost for "Alice" were openings in France (generating $14.9 million from 746 screens) and in China ($5.1 million from 450 locations). "Dragon," which opened No. 1 in Brazil, Mexico and Spain, did best in its second weekend in Russia ($6.4 million for a market cume of $16.7 million).

For its part, "Avatar" drew another $7.6 million on the weekend from 2,600 situations in 63 markets, pushing its overseas gross total to an unprecedented $1.950 billion.

HR fully updated:

"Do you realize that just two films have dominated the No. 1 spot on the foreign theatrical circuit over the entire first quarter of 2010?

Overseas hunger for spectacle in 3D propelled 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" to the top spot for eight consecutive weeks this year, through Feb. 28.

Then audiences shifted to Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," which has rounded out the rest of the quarter with its fourth straight No. 1 finish.

By the end of March 2009, eight films ranging from DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" to Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" took turns in the lofty No. 1 slot overseas.

Director Tim Burton's 3D version of "Alice" drew $46 million on the weekend from 7,170 screens in 51 markets for an offshore cume of $363 million. The worldwide gross total stands at $656.1 million.

"Alice" was challenged by Paramount's release of DreamWorks Animation's "How To Train Your Dragon," which drew $31 million from 5,594 locations in 35 markets, of which 32 are new.

Director James Cameron's blockbuster ranks No. 4 on the weekend, behind the No. 3 title, director Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," which grossed $10 million from 46 territories handled by Paramount and other distributors.

The Paramount portion of "Shutter Island's" run accounted for $8.1 million from 2,697 screens. The period drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio has grossed a total of $125.6 million overseas to date.

No. 5 was Warner Bros.' "The Blind Side" starring Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, which opened No. 3 in the U.K. ($2 million from 369 sites) for a total of $6.7 million on the weekend from 9,600 screens in 28 markets for a foreign cume to date of $22.4 million.

Director Andy Tennant's "The Bounty Hunter," Sony's romantic comedy costarring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, laughed all the way to $6.1 million from 1,705 screens in 31 markets. Total overseas take after 10 days on the foreign circuit is $16.8 million.

Opening No. 1 in Korea was "Green Zone," which grossed $2 million in the market (via Sierra Pictures) from 276 situations. Overall on the weekend, Universal's Iraq War drama starring Matt Damon tallied $6 million from 2,100 sites in 27 territories for an international cume of $28.8 million.

Topping the U.K. market on the weekend was Universal's release of Working Title Films' sequel "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," which generated $4 million from 510 locations. The distributor says that is 4% more than the opening boxoffice figure compiled in the market by the original 2005 "Nanny McPhee."

The family romp starring Emma Thompson as a benign governess with magical powers also played dates in Ireland, Iceland and the Netherlands, and grossed overall $4.3 million from 614 sites.

Summit International's "Remember Me," a romantic melodrama starring Robert Pattison, drew an estimated $4 million from 1,944 screens in 29 markets. Foreign cume stands at $9.9 million.

Finishing in second place in France was Universal's local language coproduction, "L'arnacoeur" ("Heartbreakers"), which grossed in its second round an estimated $3.5 million from 379 situations. The romantic comedy, which opened a strong No. 1 last round, has generated a 12-day market cume of $10.7 million.

Opening third in France was Pathe's "Tout ce qui brille" ("All that Glitters"), a family comedy co-directed by actress Geraldine Nakache and Herve Mimram about the adventures of two young women on the town in Paris. Debut tally was an estimated $2.3 million from 340 screens.

At the opposite end of the content spectrum is "L'immortel" ("22 Bullets"), a crime caper reuniting producer Luc Besson and actor Jean Reno, who plays an ex-mobster whose attempt to go straight is interrupted by his attempted assassination. The EuropaCorp. Distribution release finished No. 4 with $2.2 million drawn from 650 sites.

Finishing fifth was Gaumont's "La Rafle" ("The Roundup"), the historical drama about French police collaboration with the Nazis, which grossed $2.7 million in its third stanza at 650 locations for a market cume so far of $14.1 million.

Other international cumes: Warner Bros.' "Valentine's Day," $104.5 million; Universal's "It's Complicated," $105.3 million; Lionsgate's "Brothers," $10.2 million; Sony's "The Book of Eli," $2.7 million from Sony-handled territories only; Warner Bros.' "Invictus," $87 million; Lionsgate's "Daybreakers," $17.5 million; and Universal's "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," $20 million.

Also, Fox's "Crazy Heart," $ 5.4 million; Lionsgate's "The Men Who Stare at Goats," $31 million; Universal's "The Wolfman," $75.9 million; Lionsgate's "The Spy Next Door," $18 million; Fox's "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," $133.7 million; Lionsgate/Sony's "Dear John," $9 million thanks to a $900,000 opening in Spain at 207 screens; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $42 million; and Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes," $305.3 million after a $2.2 million weekend from 1,250 screens in 19 markets). "

Saw Clash just tonight, movie was good but not great. I just thought they rushed the 2nd half of the movie too much and felt thin. You may feel slightly cheated with the final end game.

Crowds was so so, about 40% Full at a 6:40pm Thursday session. Looks to gross well but nothing spectacular here in Australia.

"The year's second quarter dawned on the foreign theatrical circuit with a new boxoffice champ in place as Warner Bros.' "Clash of the Titans" grossed an estimated $44.2 million in its opening launch at 4,240 screens in 15 markets.

Director Louis Leterrier's 3D, special effects-laden update of MGM's 1981 action fantasy loosely based on Greek mythology and co-produced by Ray Harryhausen and Charles Schneer is only the third title of 2010 to take the No. 1 spot overseas. (By this time last year, nine titles successively topped offshore charts.)

"Titans" took over Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D, which spent a month as the No. 1 foreign title after 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" dominated for the year's first eight rounds.

"Alice" drew $34.2 million from 8,443 spots in 51 markets, and ranks No. 3 on the weekend. "Avatar" finished out of the top five with $4.6 million generated from 2,300 screens in 37 markets for a foreign gross total of $1.959 billion.

Easter weekend action for "Titans," which stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, claimed the No. 1 spot in each market played, drawing $7.8 million over three days from 752 sites in the U.K.; $8.6 million over five days in Spain from 549 spots; $6.8 million over four days from 591 Korea screens; and $5.9 million over four days in Australia from 349 situations.

As per Warner Bros, "Titans" beat the comparable opening grosses in the same 15 territories recorded by 2006's "300" ($38 million) and 2004's "Troy" ($32 million). Openings in France and Germany are due this week.

The weekend's No. 2 film, DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon," opened in 19 territories, and garnered an animated $38.5 million overall from 7,658 locations in 54 markets for a total of $99 million.

Nearly 70% of the tally derived from some 3,477 3D venues. "Dragon's" best openers were in the U.K ($7.8 million from 716 sites, with 76% of revenues coming from 3D locations) and France, where it grabbed $4.7 million from 743 spots.

Director Tim Burton's "Alice" in 3D has grossed $422.3 million overseas thus far, making it the 36th biggest offshore boxoffice hit ever, surpassing 2002's "Spider-Man" ($418 million). Biggest weekend markets were France (No. 1 with $8.7 million from 737 spots for a market cume of $25.8 million) and China ($7.3 million from 1,477 locations for an 11-day market cume of $21.4 million, making "Alice" Disney's best-grossing film ever in the market).

Worldwide, the Johnny Depp vehicle's cume is $732.1 million, making it one of only 38 film titles in history to cross the $700 million global gross mark. "Alice" stands as the 35th most popular release of all time, and the sixth biggest-grossing title ever released by Disney.

New entries on the foreign circuit on the weekend included Universal's "Kick-Ass," director Matthew Vaughn's comic book-based saga about a nerdy teenager turned superhero. The film opened No. 4 in the U.K. with $5.7 million derived from 403 screens. U.S. opening via Lionsgate is due April 16.

Also, Disney opened in Australia and New Zealand "The Last Song," a melodrama based on a Nicholas Sparks novel about the vicissitudes of a rebellious teenage girl. Debut tally for the Miley Cyrus vehicle was an estimated $1.5 million from some 300 screens in both markets.

Paramount opened DreamWorks' romantic comedy "She's Out of My League" in five markets for a total of $2.3 million from 611 spots. Universal premiered "Repo Men" in Russia for $1.4 million from 311 situations.

The weekend's No. 4 title was Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," which generated $10.3 million from 2,500 sites in 12 markets for an overseas cume of $17.2 million. Fifth was Sony's "The Bounty Hunter," costarring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, which laid claim to $9.3 million from 2,170 screens in 41 markets for an overseas cume of $29.8 million.

Director Martin Scorsese's drama "Shutter Island" from Paramount and other distributors drew $6.7 million on the weekend, of which Paramount contributed $5.4 million from 2,458 situations in 42 markets. Overseas cume stands at $132.4 million with a Japan opening set for the coming weekend.

Warner Bros.' "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock boosted its overseas take to $31.7 million thanks to a $4.9 million weekend at some 1,800 screens in 28 markets. Summit International's "Remember Me," a romantic melodrama starring Robert Pattinson, drew $4.7 million on the weekend from 2,485 screens in 33 territories for an overseas total of $17.2 million.

In France, the American majors were very much in evidence over the weekend on the local-language front. "L'Arnacoeur" ("Heartbreaker"), a romantic comedy which Universal co-produced, garnered $2.7 million in its third round at 436 screens, sufficient for the No. 3 market spot. The 19-day market cume is $15.1 million

Premiering on the weekend was a Warner Bros. France production, "Tete de Turc," director Pascal Elbe's social drama about rebellious youth in the poor suburbs of Paris. Opening take was $800,000 from 200 locations and a No. 8 market finish.

Also new to the France market was "Les invites de mon pere" ("My Father's Guest"), a UGC release of director-co-scripter Anne Le Ny's comedy about a retired physician who acquires a new wife. Opening surge generated $1.7 million from 220 sites for a No. 6 market ranking.

Other international cumes: Universal's "Green Zone," $33.8 million (due to a $2.9 million weekend at 1,760 screens in 25 markets); Fox's "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief," $136 million; Universal's "It's Complicated," $107.3 million; EuropaCorp. Distribution's "L'immortel" ("22 Bullets"), $5.6 million in France only; Fox's "Tooth Fairy," $43.6 million; Gaumont's "La Rafle" ("The Roundup"), $16.7 million in France only; Sony's "Dear John," $14.6 million; and Pathe's "Tout ce qui brille" ("All that Glitters"), $4.9 million. Shutter Island is performing quite terrificly overseas. The Departed finished with around $157 million OS and Shutter Island is looking to approach the same mark as well. It still has Japan (and Singapore) left, so that $150+ million OS is likely. Should become Scorsese's second $250+ million worldwide hit in a row and his fourth in a row to have passed $100 million overseas where his name is an even bigger draw than domestically it seems.

After the magnificent openings of Alice In Wonderland. Clsah of the Titans and How To Train Your Dragon looks mediocre by comparison.

Clash's result is slightly dissapointing, the numbers don't show breakout success, more along the lines of Watchmen but slightly larger and having Asian support. This won't do much more than $250m overseas at this rate considering the poor reviews and sure to be harsh drops as the May releases draw near.

How To Trian your Dragon's openigns so far have not been at the same level as Kung Fu Panda or Madagascar 2. It is however on par if not bigger than Monsters vs Aliens in some European countries. Legs will surely be good so i think there's still hope for close to $300m.

Well, it has Germany, Russia, Japan, Brazil, France, Netherlands, Scandinavia and a bunch of smaller markets ahead. Not sure whether it'll open in China. So big things are still to come and $400+ million worldwide is happening.

Oh and I'd say How to Train Your Dragon is way bigger than Monsters Vs. Aliens overseas. A $250+ million OS total is almost guaranteed (whereas MvA stalled at less than $200 million).

Um, what?

I am perfectly aware of the fact that Scandinavia is not a country, but it is more conveniet to sum up the whole region considering most films open in all three/four countries simultaneously.

No one gives a shit about poor reviews, especially not OS audiences who never see any of the America-centric criticism anyway.
WOM does count though and you don't need good reviews to have good WOM.

Yeah, the signs in Germany are looking very good too. I think this can make $300+ million overseas and $450+ million worldwide.

Quote:
A spectacular debut in Russia played its part in helping Clash Of The Titans hold on to the international crown as Warner Bros Pictures International’s titan shot past $100m in its second weekend.

The action adventure was active on more than 7,000 screens in 31 territories and 2,610 3D screens accounted for $34.9m or 65% of total box office from 37% of total screens.

Weekend business was punctuated by a trio of number one debuts, led by that sensational Russian result of $12.4m (361m roubles) from 919. French audiences generated $7.6m (€5.6m) from 615 for their compatriot, director Louis Leterrier, and Germany produced $6.4m (€4.7m) from 672.

The only new opening was in Poland, where $790,000 from 95 sites understandably fell below expectations after president Lech Kaczynski’s death on Saturday in a fatal air crash. The film is set to open in Turkey on April 23, South Korea on May 20 and Japan on August 7.

Shutter Island added $7.3m to bring the international running total to $143.9m.
