 Star Trek 2 predictions
mark66 wrote: Okay my dear friends, I officially declare my first club a failure... Judging by Friday's box office even the most generous IM doesn't point to anything more than $85m until Sunday...
However when I started the club last November most predictions looked like this:
less than 30 million opening with a finish around 70 million -I put it at 35 million opening and 68 Million final -opening? 30's, maybe 40 -$30 mil max. -Even the best reboot imaginable does not point north of 40 -Make something like 46. When things go good....
Even though my club failed, the spirit of it is pretty much alive. J.J. Abrams delivered a crowd pleaser and proved that there is still life in this 43 year old franchise...
Let's enjoy the ride and start predictions for STAR TREK 2, coming to a theater near you in Summer 2011... Let's do it...

Will open to $90-100 million and make $250+ million in total.

So, you made a Dr. Lecter thread before Dr. Lecter could make it. Bravo, mark

Tough to say so soon obviously. However, keep in mind not all sequels to a well received film end up grossing more or significantly more.

Depends; Iron Man is primed to own next May. I see 160/475 for IM2 at the moment, a # ST2 wont touch.

Re: Star Trek 2 (Summer 2011) predictions
Well the first one is destroying the "stigma" against ST, so that by the time this one hits, it won't exist. Considering that, and how the fanboys will be back in full force, and this should have magnificent WOM and probably great DVD sales/rentals, so yeah...this will be a lot bigger. There's no point in guessing how much bigger just yet, but a lot bigger.

Whatever it is, it's not reaching TDK total.

Re: Star Trek 2 (Summer 2011) predictions
I still feel Trek is too nerdy to reach those hights that some of you are thinking it's capable of. (heh, only a year ago people were mocking me for predicting outlandish numbers for Trek, how the tide has turned) I like Lecter's predictions, personally, around $100m for OW, maybe it'd go a little higher regarding its total, say $280m. But before settling for a number for the sequel, why don't we wait at least a week or two to see how Trek 11 performs, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Re: Star Trek 2 (Summer 2011) predictions
If on a regular weekend, I agree with Lecter: around $90-100m opening.
$250m+ finish... like around $275-290 million
4-day weekend could see a $110-120 million opening and maybe a chance at $300m

Re: Star Trek 2 (Summer 2011) predictions
Let's not kid ourselves. Star Trek is no Star Wars. While SW is accepted amongst the mainstream, ST still has the geeky, nerd taboo associated with. In the coming weeks, as WOM continues to grow, the stigma will be destroyed. And as far as I'm concerned the sky is the limit for the next ST movie. JJ Abrams has been able to do what Lucas was not (or tried not to do), please old fans and bring in a new generation of fans. With the increase in IMAX and natural increase in inflation, my 135 million OW may even be low balling. Taken from Mark's other thread: Quote: When STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE opened with $11.9m back in 1979 it represented the biggest opening weekend of all-time...
When STAR TREK II - THE WRATH OF KHAN opened with $14.3m back in 1982 it represented the biggest opening weekend of all-time...
When STAR TREK III - THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK opened with $16.7m back in 1984 it represented the 3rd biggest opening weekend of all-time... The potential is certainly there for a massive increase for ST2. Lets not forget how sensational WOM is for this movie. It is still at an A on Yahoo after 5000 reviews.

Taking into consideration moviegoers' rapidly growing taste for stupidity, I'm going to have to predict 210/760...

Bradley, believe or think of this as you will, but it is not stupid, and consequently making such a strong claim while the rest of the world including the most cynical of reviewers and movie fanatics disagree with you full-heartedly ironically makes you appear stupid.

Yeah, yeah... and Transformers was a PhD thesis in robotics. I could care less about what anyone else thinks, but you will find that others will begin to share my opinion as the hype starts to wear off (as usual)...

I only tolerated you saying I "appear stupid" in this thread, because you took the time to learn the interpersonal dynamics of the forum before being bold enough to put forward your (incorrect) opinion. Besides, I was only half joking about my prediction - - I wouldn't be surprised to see the BO jump to ridiculous heights for the sequel, after I saw how far stupidity carried TDK last year. No matter, how stupid I thought the new Star Trek was, I have to say it's producers were very smart - - they know that there's a hot market for world class stupidity these days. I wasn't saying you were necessarily in the wrong, I agree Warmaster has no right to talk like that being a total newb, and honestly, I still try to avoid sounding off unless it's really deserved, seeing as I've only been here 5 months, not 5 years. I was just expressing my surprise cause I don't often see you react so strongly to people, that's all.
