But I don't see $60M as a lowball. That's a great number

The important thing is that Paramount DOES see 60m as a lowball, otherwise they wouldn't have put it out there.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

What i find surprising is Paramount expects 25-35m from overseas. That would be an absolutely terrible opening considering it opens in pretty much all important markets this weekend.

DMA predicted 60M for MVA. They definitely did not low ball it. I remember Fox predicting 30's for TDTESS. They definitely did not low ball it as well. Plus dont ignore what rival studios thought about that number. I dont know why rival studios will low ball trek.

hmm... and I thought the under 25 was the key demograph. Well I know a ton of high schoolers with interest in ST so if that is one of the lowest demographs, good sign.
I think it might be a little soft at my theater, since our biggest demograph is seniors (55+) but we do have a lot of 40-60 year olds as well, so they may show up. I think if it does over 200 tickets total tonight at my theater that's a pretty good sign for a strong OW.

Okay, what do I think about the $7m in 5 hours?

Well, actually I was hoping for $10m, on the other hand IRON MAN did $4m in 4 hours on its way to $102m...

So this number doesn't give a clue where STAR TREK is heading 'til Sunday...

In other news:

IMDB is up to 8.4 (3.939 votes - 1 point haters down to 7.1 %)

Rotten Tomatoes upto 96 % (180/188) average still at 8.1...

Metacritic is down to 84 % (35 reviews)

Yahoo users straight A (2.000 votes)

'Star Trek' opens at $7 million to $8 million last night, is outpacing 'Wolverine's' Friday morning ticket sales
"Star Trek" is on its way to a huge opening weekend.

Paramount's reboot of the classic franchise grossed between $7 million and $8 million from Thursday evening and midnight shows, according to knowledgeable industry source. That's bigger than last year's "Iron Man," which sold about $5 million of tickets on a comparable Thursday opening and went on to make $102.1 million by Sunday.

More notably, one person with access to box-office data said today that "Star Trek" had already sold about $3 million worth of tickets by this morning. That's twice as big as "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which opened to $85 million, at the same point last week.

However, given the franchise's devoted base of hard-core fans, sales for the earliest shows don't necessarily mean the movie will go on to be as big as "Iron Man." But it's now looking very likely it will warp past tracking that indicated it would make between $65 million and $75 million.

Even distribution executives at competing studios, who usually remain nonplussed about competitors' performances, were uniformly impressed by the early returns.

Paramount hasn't yet released an official gross or responded to a request for comment.

Post Declaration of defeat
Okay my dear friends, I officially declare my first club a failure... Judging by Friday's box office even the most generous IM doesn't point to anything more than $85m until Sunday...

However when I started the club last November most predictions looked like this:

less than 30 million opening with a finish around 70 million
-I put it at 35 million opening and 68 Million final
-opening? 30's, maybe 40
-$30 mil max.
-Even the best reboot imaginable does not point north of 40
-Make something like 46. When things go good....

Even though my club failed, the spirit of it is pretty much alive. J.J. Abrams delivered a crowd pleaser and proved that there is still life in this 43 year old franchise...

Let's enjoy the ride and start predictions for STAR TREK 2, coming to a theater near you in Summer 2011...

Yeah, failure, but the fact it'll make in 3.5 days what many (including me) thought it'd make in total is funny.

I can't wait to see it.

You had to hit around 80-85m 3.5 day to get the benefit of the doubt, but it was still a lot closer than most thought, even right before numbers hit.

Like i said in the beginning, this will have a Batman Begins kinda performance. Maybe the sequel can flirt with $100m...

It was a gutsy club that wasn't necessarily realistic but props for being closer than my prediction from back then.

Yup, I gotta admit that this blew my expectations away from when you opened this thread. You called a huge breakout early, even if $100m was absolutely absurd.

Most predictable club failure ever at WOKJ (among clubs not created by BKB).

But it certainly outopened most expectations. After the first trailer I was thinking $45-50 million, but certainly not $70+ million.

Yep, because I opened the club after the first trailer - see first post:
