90 on Metacritic with three 100s, including a pristinely glowing one from Ebert (Calling the director the "new great American director"), and 100% on RT with 23 reviews so far. If it does well enough at the box office and Roadside handles it well, Original Screenplay could be possible, and Red West could always pull a Richard Jenkins/Richard Farnsworth.

Seems much smaller than usual for this type of film to gain any traction. We'll see I guess.

Sounds like a great flick, though.

Not sure if even the mighty Scorsese can get a horror film nominated. I haven't read the novel but I continue to hear mixed things (some LOVE it, some not so much).

What was the last director to follow up a BP winner with a BP nominee (Shine a Light doesn't count)? Eastwood missed it by a tiny bit.

because it was a documentary or what? I would think SAL would count.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

When was the last time a Documentary was nominated for Best Picture?

James L. Brooks, with Broadcast News, though he was nominated himself. Woody Allen is the last director to follow up a BP winner with a Director nomination (Interiors), but then that wasn't nominated for Picture! So the last director to follow up a BP winner with BOTH nominations was actually William Friedkin (THe Exorcist). Coppola's Godfather followup as technically The Conversation, which missed a Director nomination.
But yeah, that little fact has kept me from predicting King Kong, Geisha, Flags of Our Fathers and In the Valley of Elah. I don't see that changing.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
It's Scorsese, though. I feel that the Academy and the moviegoers have started to warm up to him recently. I mean his last three films (not counting SAL again) got 26 Oscar noms and won 9 Oscars. The box-office of them kept increasing too with the average gross for the three being at $100+ million. (The Dearted was also one of the biggest WoM and DVD hits of its year).
DiCaprio starts to seem a bit overdue at this point too, so if he delivers the goods and can secure a Best Actor nom for himself, I think it'll propel the film to a BP nom as well. I also don' really see a gross of less than $60-70 million for it with the right marketing.

The Departed was, cast aside, anything but Oscar baity. You should go back and read the comments n it as that was what almost everyone was saying before it came out.

The Departed for me was the complete opposite of Oscar bait. I'm not the biggest fan of the film or its win, but yeah, it was a popcorn film all the way, which made its Oscar win kinda cool

But it was a remake of a highly acclaimed award winning Asian flick directed by none other than Scorsese who at the time has been touted as long overdue for an Oscar with an all star cast. It's like saying Nine is not an Oscar baity movie. It was in an Oscar genre too (crime thriller)... Which part of the movie didn't sound like bait? The plot? The original should've been enough for the doubtful to recognize The Departed as an Oscar bait.

Nine and The Departed are world's apart. Which awards did the original Departed win?

Pretty much every single person disagreed on that, diminishing The Dparted's Oscar chances all the way until Oscar night because it was anything, but Oscar bait. It was very bloody, it was fun, it had over 200 "fuck"'s in it. That was NO Oscar bait.
