Best Director
P.T. Anderson, There Will Be Blood Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men Sean Penn, Into The Wild Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
It's been so hard for me to decide who the lone director slot will go to, now that Julian Schnabel won't be the lone director, since Diving Bell is so bloody strong and will be nominated for Best Picture. I've finally decided that Tim Burton will likely get the nomination - even though the film won't be nominated. I think everyone agrees it's his return back to Burton glory, and there are no other directors I would pin as being "lone director" material.
The other 4 spots seem locked to me: Anderson, Coens, Penn, and Schnabel.
Peace, Mike

If Atonement gets into Best Picture, it will be Joe Wright and my gut says Joe Wright but I think I'm gonna go with facts and say Gilroy
Paul Thomas Anderson Joel and Ethan Coen Tony Gilroy Sean Penn Julian Schnabel

Best Director
1 Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men 2 Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly 3 Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood 4 Sean Penn, Into The Wild 5 Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Although I won't be surprised to see Joe Wright bump out either Anderson on Penn instead of bumping out Gilroy, as directors love to nominate the performance-centric direction style of Gilroy.

2000? Soderbergh had been nominated before for writing, but not directing, and it was the first time for Ang and Daldry.

Re: Building A Consensus: T-2 Days (Best Director)
Yeah, but Scott was the only one who had been nominated for Best Director prior to that year.
I mean, if you want to get down to it, Penn and PTA are a prior nominees also, just not for Directing.

Re: Building A Consensus: T-2 Days (Best Director)
Hmm, I guess that makes sense.
Looking over the past Director nominees, there are years with some bizarre picks (04 with Hackford and Leigh, 95 with Mike Figgis, Chris Noonan, and Michael Radford - who?) and then some really solid years (01 had Altman, PJ, Lynch, Scott... and Ron Howard). In a year with so many great director's films, it makes me kinda sad that potentially three first-time (or close to it) directors are gonna get Oscar noms, over largely ignored visionary directors like Burton, Fincher + Cronenberg.

It's a good movie, but I don't see how the hell it can be proclaimed as a masterpiece of any sort. I'd be really pissed if it somehow managed anything outside some deserved tech nods and maybe something for Depp.
