If only New Line really got nehind Little Children, I think it wouldn't be too hard to get a nod.

xiayun wrote: Mav, I think we should track Pan's Labyrinth. It's at least a strong contender for foreign language. And Borat too. The reviews are just too good. Screenplay and actor noms are possible.
I will have to get arsi to add those when he gets back.
I just updated, and Volver is starting to kick some really seriously "Penelope Cruz is a lock for a nom" type of ass.

Little Children seems dead in the water to me. I haven't seen it yet but it seems its shot it's bolt to early. For one the very small section given to its review in Empire is a worrying sign in itself.
Pan's Labyrinth is looking like a serious dark horse for some Noms. Its early reviews are stunning.

Borat got a 91 from BFCA, the 9th film scoring above 90 this year. Getting rather crowded for its top 10 list.

Quote: As if we didn't know already--Zhang Yimou is a fucking genius. Whether tackling intimate stories such as The Road Home and the recent Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles or mounting action extravaganzas such as Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and now this, the man can seemingly do no wrong. Marking the first collaboration between Zhang and one-time muse Gong Li since their personal split after 1995's Shanghai Triad, Curse leans more heavily on drama than stunts than his last two period action films, but what rich drama it is, following the various romantic, familial, and political intrigue lurking in the imperial palace. Sporting a long, grey-peppered wig and beard, Chow Yun-Fat is virtually unrecognizable as the Emperor, but his singular presence and effortless gravitas is unmistakable--and the film is unthinkable without it. After all these years apart, the Zhang/Gong magic is stronger than ever, her vividly etched emotion erasing lingering thoughts of her awkward Miami Vice work. (I'm resigned to being insanely pissed that Sony Pictures Classics will undoubtedly half-ass a Gong Best Actress nod push in favor of the inexplicably hyped-up Penelope Cruz campaign.) But the real star again is Zhang, who serves up a sumptuous sensory feast (while not as extensively in his last two actioners, he continues to make bold use of color, here in particular the contrast between gleaming gold and blood red) with spectacular set pieces and--crucially--the story, characters, and connection to back it up.

In the thick of AFI Fest coverage right now, and I had intended to use this blog to post up-to-the-minute blurbs as screenings happen, but time and energy have been wanting. Reports on what I've caught at the fest are still to come... (and for those in the L.A. area, the world premier of Curse of the Golden Flower is the closing night film on Sunday, November 12--tickets are indeed still available, but don't let the cost deter you).

I was somewhat underwhelmed by The Queen, I wouldn't be a fan of a BP nomination.
I'm watching Babel in a few hours.

I'm seeing Babel this weekend, possibly today. I also need to see Borat. The Queen will probably be next week. I could kick myself for not seeing Catch a Fire. It's already been here and gone, and unless one of the other theaters get it, I'd have to make an hour trip.

This will probably bite me in the ass but I have a very strong feeling I will dislike Babel, perhaps even hate and I shouldn't go into films thinking like that.

It can be tough. I really can't stand Brad Pitt anymore, so I have to keep that seperated from the work. It's also obvious that he's one of the boys in Hollywood, so I expect success with the Oscars, and he'll be one of the speech makers when The Departed wins. Grrrr.....
Cate Blanchet is actually a heavyweight contender this year. Not only does she have a film with the delicious Dame Judi Dench, but she's a leading lady for BOTH George Clooney and Brad Pitt. That's pretty strong.

It's probably because Best Actress is so freaking weak, but I'm predicting her for a double nom this year - Actress for The Good German, Supporting for Notes on a Scandal.
And if Leo does indeed go Supporting for The Departed, he might also have a shot at double nomination, getting a lead nom for The Blood Diamond.

Babel is now COTC rotten.
And Kris Tapley didn't like The Good German much.

I am seeing Babel at the 4PM showing. (20 minutes) Had a choice between it and Borat. I'll see Borat tomorrow, most likely, but definitely this weekend.

Last night on ABC I saw an epic tv spot for Babel. I had already seen the movie but this LONG commercial really made the film look like an amazing masterpiece. I'd give a nomination based on that clip alone.
I don't like, though, how they are really up-playing the Pitt/Blanchett storyline when it's probably the one with the least screentime and down-playing the one storyline that many people disliked. It's marketing I guess but it's just setting up viewers for at least mild disappointment.

The commercials for Babel have been incredible. It gets me pumped every time I see it. Some great quotes from the critics who LOVED the film are flashed across the screen systematically, and puts emphasis on how this is Brad Pitt's best career performance, showing him in scenes of anguish at the same time. The commercial is very driven; one of the best structured I've seen in a long while.
PEACE, Mike.

Depends on how many Jewish academy members are offended. I was always under the impression that Mel was loved within the industry, and it was clear about a month ago when a few reluctant praises leaked out that this was going to be one to watch.
