Road to Perdition didn't fade fast. It was nominated for PGA and was right there among the top 7 contenders all the way to the nominations. Same for Cold Mountain.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as soon as the winter season hit, no one talked about RTP in the oscar race. therefore, it faded fast. the buzz was high while the pic was released, just like seabiscuit. seabiscuit was nominated, but RTP wasnt.
i personally thought RTP was a better film than seabiscuit.
Quote: Released too early? (late summer). Not as much of a box office hit as it was supposed to be? Maybe a little too dark? Actors carrying other films? Sometimes you will notice a picture like Sideways, pushed by the indie folk, Million Dollar pushed by the critics, Ray pushed by the public, The Aviator pushed as an old-Hollywood-presige picture and Finding Neverland pushed as a literary film. Despite the lack of a real b.o. performer last year, there are a lot of conventions here. Sometimes that doesn't leave much room for anything else to get nominated.
Remember that Academy members, all of them, vote on best picture nominees (just for nominations). It's the only category that every single academy member gets to vote on, and they only get to put three choices on their ballot. If Road to Perdition, because of personal tastes, politics, etc. isn't on that top 3 then it is effectively shut out of a BP nomination.
the only issue with RTP should have been its release date. Schindler's List was nominated, yet it was dark. same with saving private ryan... million dollar baby was very dark, shawshank was mostly dark, etc.
the academy loves dark pictures. RTP made barely over 100 million dollars, which is more than List and Baby. the box office reasoning cannot be used because of the nominations of other pictures just as dark that did not make as much money... mystic river is another example.

I don't get what everyone is arguing about?
What point are each of you trying to make?
the thread is a debate about predictions, not a debate on whether we should have predictions! why else did people invent the word prediction

Quote: shawshank was mostly dark, etc. *shrug* Nobody would fault you if you would put Road to Perdition on a list of Best Picture nominees in 2002. It didn't make it. That's the randomness. Like I said, it was easily in the top 10 for potential nominees, it just didn't hit the top 5. Quote: RTP made barely over 100 million dollars, which is more than List and Baby. Quote: the box office reasoning cannot be used because of the nominations of other pictures just as dark that did not make as much money... mystic river is another example. Of course this is all opinion. For a film like Road to Perdition, having a lower box office is more of a problem because of its status as a wide release, big studio picture, a-list star, etc.. A $150 million performance would have pretty much secured its status as a Best Picture nominee. Ray wouldn't have gone anywhere without its box office performance. Mystic River doesn't fall into that same bracket (although Mystic had a HUGE box office). It really depends picture to picture. I would say this year Box Office is important for Jarhead, The New World (although since it moved this is a big question mark) and films like The Producers and to an extent it even tugs at pictures like A History of Violence. But Munich and Match Point? Brokeback Mountain? All The King's Men? It doesn't tug on them the same way. The same list of issues are not applied to every film in the same way. The Constant Gardener can be a huge Oscar success if it can keep going with word of mouth and general buzz, but this isn't happening. This is life. This is why 95% of the Best Picture nominees are usually released in Nov or Dec. Raffiki wrote: the thread is a debate about predictions

So I think the winner will be one of these three:
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Sean Penn, All The Kings Men
Joaquin and Heath seem to be amping up for a showdown, as they're the two most regarded so far easily. I think its almost guaranteed to be one of them, the only one I can see upsetting that is if Sean Penn can pull something magnificent out of his ass, his best, and surprise the hell out of everybody. We know hes good enough.

In that order.

This year seems much less predictable than less one, to be honest with the only lock seeming to be Joaquin Phoenix.
My predictions:
Joaquin Phoenix - Walk the Line
Eric Bana - Munich
Jake Gyllenhaal - Jarhead
Heath Ledger - Brokeback Mountain (is he lead or supporting?)
Colin Farrell - The New World
Sean Penn is the wildcard at this moment, IMO. As far as the winner goes...Phoenix or Gyllenhaal, I'd say.

Thats a friggin sweet list... I'm very pleased with the "potential nominees" right now. I'd flip my shit if it turned out to look something like this:
Jake Gyllenhaal
Heath Ledger
Joaquin Phoenix
Viggo Mortensen
Philip Seymor Hoffman
Rod re: Shia -- I agree man, that kid's got talent. Seems to be choosing pretty solid movies too.

that seems like such an unlikely top 5. No offense, it just seems like the whole list is young up-and-coming actors and I don't think the academy will go all the way!

The only nomination Capote really wants is Best Actor and I'm pretty sure Philip Seymour Hoffman will finally get nominated after years of scenery-chewing and obnoxious, showy roles.

Updated List:
1. Phillip Seymour-Hoffman +2
2. Heath Ledger- Brokeback Mountain -1
3. Joaquin Phoenix- Walk the Line -1
4. David Straithairn =
5. Tommy Lee Jones +1
6. Viggo Mortensen +1
7. Ralph Fiennes -3
8. Eric Bana +2 (big question mark)
9. Ken Wattanabe -1 (where's the buzz for his movie?)
10. Jake Gyllenhaal NE (lead/supporting, mountain, jarhead??)
Just Missing the top 10:
Cillian Murphy- Breakfast on Pluto
Possbilities (but unlikely)
Sean Penn- All the King's Men
Nathan Lane- The Producers
Collin Farrel- The New World (the movie will have to be BEYOND amazing for him to get in)
Out of the top 10:
George Clooney (will probably do better with Good Night..)
Other than my top 11 at the moment I don't really see many other contenders, unless Match Point really does end up doing better than anyone could imagine (even if it becomes a favorite i dont see it getting that many noms, instead settling for just about 5 like lost intranslation...pic, director, writing, acting for johansson maybe, but nothing in this category.)

I just can't see Ledger, Hoffman, and Straitharn all making it in. The critics will rally behind one, maybe two but not all three. My current picks:
1. Joaquin Phoenix - Walk The Line
2. Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
3. Russell Crowe - Cinderella Man
4. Tommy Lee Jones - The Three Burials of whatever.
5. Heath Ledger - Brokeback Mountain

Sorry, my post was really poorly written. What I meant was I don't expect Hoffman, Ledger, and Straitharn ALL to receive nominations. I think at least one of them will miss out. I agree with you that Hoffman is becoming a safe bet.

Viggos gotta be rising on the list now. History of Violence is doing excellently.

Crowe is forgotten, haven't heard much about Jones yet.
I'd agree with Attodr's list except for switch Mortensen with Crowe or Jones (depending on how Jones is received).
