I wondered the same thing about Notes on a Scandal - two acting noms, screenplay and score. No editing, true, but still... with picture it'd also have more noms than Little Miss Sunshine and Letters and the same as The Departed. And once again only 2 of the BP nominees were nominated for Editing.

Dreamgirls was still an obvious 6th spot, though.

But Notes on a Scandal were expected to get those four nominations by most. The three tech noms for Blood Diamond, especially editing, are a surprise.

I agree Dreamgirls and Pan's Labyrinth should be the next two in line on the ballot order. Labyrinth could really get a BD nom (to form its own director/foreign film combo) if pushed earlier/harder.

Of all the categories, how does Children of Men miss out on both sound editing and mixing? The sound was nearly perfect and it was some of the best use of sound in a film that I have ever heard.

Wow! No Dreamgirls nomination? I'm plain shocked. Who would have guessed that?

Oh, wait...

Haha, this year is so fucking crazy. I would love it all the way, if it wasn't for...

Babel.

While I haven't seen Letters, most people who have seen it have called it one of the best and most epic of the year, it would've had a nom locked up if it wasn't for the low box-office and awareness, I'm not that upset by it.

I was the first person to say Dreamgirls might not be nominated.

Well, so, yeah.

Clearly, there aren't any gigantic surprises (other than Mark Wahlberg, maybe) other than the big one: Dreamgirls leading all films in nominations despite Best Picture and Best Director snubs, which I don't know if has ever happened before.

It really is Cold Mountain all over again, right down to the same release date, high-profile cast + director, long-term Best Supporting Actress frontrunner, multiple Best song nominations, etc.

I knew I shouldn't have gone to sleep at 7:30......

Things I'm pleased by

Little Miss Sunshine - Best Picture/Best Supporting Actors
The Black Dahlia - Best Cinematography
Dreamgirls - No Best Picture :funny:
Ryan Gosling - Half Nelson - Was this expected?

Confused by

Click - Best Achievement in Makeup - Really? There was no other film they could've slid in here?

Disappointed by

Nothing - I still haven't seen Babel.

Some thoughts:

- Awesome to see what I thought would be a token, lame best picture nominee (Dreamgirls) get snubbed in director and picture in favour of what is no doubt a better film (Letters). Yeah, I haven't seen either film, but.........come on now, seriously.

- Not awesome to see an even worse nominee (Babel) still remaining in the best picture line-up. Ridiculous nominations for Barazza (Kikuchi deserves hers), editing and score for said film.

- Unfortunate to see The Departed fall short in nominations of films like Babel. It really should have made it in one of the sound categories, which are unfortunately filled with films that have lots of loud booms, as if that is all that good sound design is about. Nicholson anchored The Departed and is more deserving of a nom in supporting actor, in that respect, than Wahlberg, but it's pretty cool to see the new guy get some recognition for some fine work of his own.

- YESSSS!!!! to the 3 nominations for Children of Men, but it realistically should have been in art direction as well.

- What the fuck with the artificial inflating of Dreamgirls total nominations by having 3 songs nominated? Stupid beyond belief to think that of 300-odd films released in a year for consideration, one film manages to grab 3 of 5 spots for a particular category. But then, I think of it having no best director or picture noms and I begin to feel better.

- Even though I haven't seen it, very cool to see Pan's Labyrinth with 6 nominations. I have a good feeling it will be in my top 10 of the year after I see it this weekend.

- Cinematography nominations are pretty awesome, barring the omission of The Fountain. Nice to see both magic movies made it, as both looked fantastic. Dahlia is very deserving, I'm sure Pan's is and of course, Children of Men blows everything else away by a far margin.

- The Fountain is missing in best original score, which sucks a large amount of ass.

- I haven't seen Blood Diamond, but pretty much everyone is telling me that Leo is better in The Departed, so what the hell is with all the attention for his Blood Diamond work?

- Aside from Babel, the writing categories are really solid.

- I don't mind seeing Clint in best director up against Marty again, because I have a feeling that this time he actually deserves it. And Marty is fucking winning that oscar.

- Marty and The Departed will be winning on Feb 25.

Also, whoever called Abigail Breslin a "little bitch" just for getting nominated?

Maybe take it down a notch, it's really not cool to be using nasty language about an (not even) 11-year-old when they really didn't do anything wrong other than get nominated for a damn Oscar.

My two cents.

OscarWatch really, really, really hates child actors. REALLY. So, I probably couldn't say (If that's where it came from, which I'm sure it did).

well they need to get over it. Dakota is getting nominated for Hound Dog.

When that happens expect littles bits of what was once OscarWatch to rain over the internet.

Besides, can you imagine the Academy watching a movie about a girl that's raped? Not exactly something that's easy to watch.

True.

But "the little bitch" was in the BP nominated movie, therefore she got the edge. And she was good, let's face it. Oscar worthy? Probably not. But still a worthy nominee.

Congrats to The Illusionist, Labyrinth, and Men, but they couldn't find a better nomination than The Black Dahlia for a fifth slot? What about The Painted Veil? Babel? Marie Antoinette? What a joke of a nomination and I wouldn't be surprised if people in the audience snicker when they say the name during the nominations. I know it's unlikely we'll be able to hear because of the music and stuff, but I know there will be some people that will.

Why do you think Black Dahlia is a joke nomination? Because the movie is bad, doesn't mean the cinematography was bad. Yes, it may be a bad movie, but the cinematography was stylish, especially their use of red. You need to learn that the something is not good because the movie isn't good. They didn't vote for the movie, they only voted for the cinematography.

But I do agree with you about Click being the biggest joke nominee, because I too thought the makeup was not convincing.

The Black Dahlia is one of the worst films of the year, but easily one of the most stylish. It deserves that nod.

I really think DiCaprio being nominated for Blood Diamond instead of Departed, hurts him.

It's just really retarded that he's not getting the oscar from the film he made with Marty, instead the one he made with Zwick

I think it helps him. Why nominate him for two performances when teh voting can get split? I think this gives him a great shot at winning. and I think his performance in BD was just a bit better than in Departed.

I agree. As much as I love Departed and his performance especially - he was even better in Blood Diamond. If Whittiker doesnt get it - I think Leo can mop up.

Agreed, The Black Dahlia had some astonishingly good cinematography. But then, I loved the film, so maybe I'm not in the best place to say.

Some of my thoughts:

Very happy with Iwo Jima's nod for picture and director. It is well deserved.

As much as I thought Jack was good in Departed, it's nice to see Wahlberg get nomianted for best supporting actor.
I really hope this is Marty's year.

Babel still makes me sick thinking about all of the bullshit praise.

After seeing COM, I really wish it was nominated for more.

Very very very glad that both DiCaprio and Honsou were nominated for their performances in Blood Diamond.

Very very happy Breslin was nominated for LMS.

As for supporting actress, and Mav and everyone else saying Hudson is a lock, I guarantee you she will not win. This will be the surprise win of the year...someone you don't see coming.
