What movie will top the National Board of Review list?
In every single year except for two, the #1 on NBR's list was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, the exceptions being Quills & Gods and Monsters.
Here are the past #1's of NBR:
2005 - Good Night, and Good Luck
2004 - Finding Neverland
2003 - Mystic River
2002 - The Hours
2001 - Moulin Rouge!
2000 - Quills
1999 - American Beauty
1998 - Gods and Monsters
1997 - L.A. Confidential
1996 - Shine
1995 - Sense and Sensibility
I don't think any of the "biggies" will make it (Flags, Dreamgirls, The Departed), something small-ish.
Capote didn't top the list despite stellar reviews, so I doubt The Queen or The Last King of Scotland will. Just not the kind of a film.
I am thinking Babel, Little Children, Little Miss Sunshine or United 93.
Going with United 93. If anything, its reviews are excellent.

I always find their top 10 interesting.
Whatever takes the top spot, hasn't been released yet. Could be a film like History Boys.

I say Little Children. They don't mind a little controversy. Or maybe Volver or The Queen.

Not Volver, I don't think a foreign film ever topped that list, I am not even sure they are eligible.

I'm sticking to my theory that there's one BP spot available. Not sure yet if it fits my 5th pic profile. Not even sure yet what my 5th pic profile is.
I'm assuming LMS pulls 5 noms and has the lowest total of the 5 films (Picture, Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, random tech). A film could match LMS with 5 or best it by 1. I don't know enough about Little Children, could it earn 5 or 6 noms?

Hmm, maybe if it has a good score? Otherwise, even IF a BP contenders, I'd see noms for BP, BD, Screenplay and Actress.
Babel could grab up to 5 as well. Volver could grab 5-6.

Let's not forget that Little Children has a score of 95 at BFCA... so it's still extremely possible

well, they liked 21 Grams. It made their top 10, they just liked Mystic River more and gave it the top prize.

It's Little Children for sure.
If not, and they somehow let it slip by, then I'd go with:
The Good German.

I don't think they'll pick another black and white film starring Clooney for two consecutive years. Little Children feels like the one they would go for.

Little Children feels too much like Closer to me and that didn't top the list. Moreover, currently I see several BP nominee contenders ahead of Little Children and as we know the probability of a BP nominee topping the list is very high, so...

Even though it's buzz-free thus far, Miss Potter might be a contender. They loved Finding Neverland...

Quills, another sexual drama with Winslet that didn't come close to get in BP, did win it though.
Hard to say; I mean, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if The Queen wins it.

I had that on my mind, yeah, but that is a rare thing and Quills had more support than that, I think.

At this point, Babel or Little Children are the best bets

I was surprised the year Mystic River won and I believe Last Samurai was second that year. I going to say another WB film tops the list this year.
The Departed
