Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
I am easy to please as I find stuff like IM and TF to be fun.
However, if I go in expecting a good film like I did with Spiderman 3, then I am pissed.

I just noticed that my vote was an "A" when I think this is really C- material. Must have selected the wrong box that day.

What is up with everyone suddenly lowering their grade by a full letter or more after someone bumped this thread?

I'll stick with my original D-... Davy Jones still looks cool. But that's all it's got.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
When I first watched the film I gave the film a B, but a year later I've found the movie doesn't hold up too well. The movie looks beautiful, has beautiful cinematography, the sets are nice, the score couldn't be any better, Davy Jones looks fantastic, and it's great to have Barbosa back.
But the film has too much talking, it's not entertaining at all. I felt like half the movie was set on the deck of a ship where the characters explained the plot of the movie to each other. And at close to a 3 hour running time, this movie is too damn long. I feel like the movie could have been greatly improved if half the characters were randomly hit by a bus and killed off. But as it stands the writers bit off more than they could chew and left too many subplots to close up the the third movie.
I may be the only one on this board who finds DMC to not only be good but better than AWE. At least the movie kept moving for the most part and retained the fun of the original. The original is still a classic in my opinion, and I would more than welcome a fourth one if they keep the story line as simple as possible with as few characters as possible.

The true test of a movie is if it stands the test of time, the original Star Wars trilogy has and I think LOTR will, but other trilogies of today like POTC and sadly The Matrix, will not.

I have been saying that for weeks now about Wall-E and TDK...

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
My grade dropped after repeat viewings I just never bothered to "officially" change it (from an A-). It's around a B. I still can't forgive the film makers for botching a great setup, but once I moved past that I was able to see and enjoy AWE for what it is.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Well fucking shoot someone for actually bother to look at a film in retrospect and instead of judging and branding it within 15 minutes of seeing it, actually letting it evolve and sink in.
AWE was a film that captured audiences with hype and spectacle, its inevitable that in retrospect, once the spectacle has worn off, that it wont be as fondly aknowledged.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Yes it is the hype and buzz that make films gross a lot of money and that allows it to have a massive opening.
Even with bad WOM, curiosity will allow the film to double its opening easily.
Really if these films had to start small and build thier wom to become big hits they would not get past the first month imo.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
I don't want to say that AWE was necessarily a bad movie, it just bit off way more than it could chew. I appreciated the fact that the writer's tried to create their own mythology rather than simply rehashing the story of the original. But I think the biggest problem was that the writers had enough material for two films, and they tried to cram it all into one. They would have in all likelihood have created two very good, fun films rather than one subpar one.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
My initial grade of AWE were somewhere between D to F but I enjoyed the movie really well when binge watching together. Again there are SO MANY concepts stuffed into this movie that it has no time to breathe and focus on those action and fun elements that are present here and there. The end is still very disappointing with too much CGI that amounts to nothing. Still a missed potential but my grade has now improved to a passing score of C+

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
I’m the opposite, loved it the first time, have struggled on every repeat. Seems like two of three hours are just people making deals with other people who are definitely going to betray them. Why is there any trust in this universe? The end is still great for me though. Battle marriage is the way to go.

This one is great if you take the time to follow it, but I can understand others lacking the patience. It’s my favorite one for sure.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
To me this is still the most disappointing film in the franchise and this is coming from someone who loved DMC. I still remember seeing this in the theater opening day and being excited only to realize I was not prepared what I was about to get myself into. This movie is still a confusing, convoluted mess IMO and while I do remember the special effects looking great it just went too off the rails with the CGI and over the set pieces that it pretty much drains any excitement out of it for me.
It's even more disappointing/frustrating when you think about the fact that this was sort of meant to be a finale for that OT of Pirates films.
