 Re: There Will Be Blood
I thought it was well made...But generally I thought it was very empty. Then in terms of its characters I didn't think they were treated like true people. The movie seemed to think it was as important as its fans make it out to be.
The drainage part? The scene didn't work for me; I thought it was haphazard.
Overall I thought the message and attitude of the film was pretty bad.

 Re: There Will Be Blood
I recently heard someone claiming they had seen There Will Be Blood five times and that they were now 100% sure it was a intended to be a flat out comedy movie.
I'll have to keep this in mind if I ever can be bothered to watch it a second time...

Also, the score is somehow even more amazing the more times I listen to it. Simply stunning. Fuck the Academy for disqualifying it. Yeah, seriously. Major fuck-up. Now I really liked Atonement's score, but sorry, TWBB should have walked away with this. Atonement had great sound editing in the way that the typewriting continued into the score, etc ( I think that would fall under the title of sound editing?) but yeah, Johnny Greenwood is amazing in general and should have gotten this oscar.

 Re: There Will Be Blood
I think a good way of describing this movie is that it's a GREAT movie, but not quite a GOOD one. Kind of like how you can love someone, if not like them. There's a lot of GREATNESS here, but not enough little things that truly make it wonderful.
I'll need to check this out again when I have a free 2.5 hours.

Typewriter sound is is a part of the score. I don't think they bothered implementing actual filmed sound on the set with the score etc...

 Re: There Will Be Blood
I should also mention we watched this in my Honors American Studies class and we're writing a paper using some bits from this and only me and one of my best friends (along with my teacher) thinks this film was awesome. Everyone else in the class (which is about 50 students) said it was boring, didn't make sense, stupid, etc.
Usual teens.

That's a fitting description for it, for me I feel the same way about 2001 sort of. Impresses the hell out of me and one of cinema's greatest (if not greatest) achievements, but I just don't like watching it much. I find it very hard to grade or rank/not rank on a top 100 list for that reason

 Re: There Will Be Blood
I found this boring. Felt like Nothing happened and this has happened to me with a lot of Oscar nominees of late. Benjamin Button, Crash and so on and so.
If this is considered to be one of the greatest, well ...
I could sit and watch Ben Hur for like 4 hours but this almost made me fall asleep.
Also I like Daniel Day Lewis.
Last of the Mohicans is an all time favourite of mine. See that was much better, more characters and better story.
I am sorry this was boring and you know I am a fun of great story films.

 Re: There Will Be Blood
There Will Be Blood
It started good, and I was really interested in it up until the last third where it started to have lulls. When his "son" grew older and married, and when his drinking noticeably affected his persona, those were the more boring parts of the movie. There's no need to say this, because everyone knows it, but Daniel Day-Lewis is one great actor. I've enjoyed him in all that I've seen him in; this, Gangs of New York and The Last of the Mohicans. Very watchable.
The thing I didn't like was how from 1902 to 1927, a period of twenty-five years, Daniel Plainview and Ely Sunday didn't change in appearance at all. That was a glaring error in continuity. I would also have liked to see more of the oil drilling/success of the oil deal with the union. But it seems as soon as Plainview gets the deal, which isn't shown, the film concentrates on his older days. The first and second thirds of the film are focusing on the oil connections and business, then the final third just drops that and focuses on his alcoholism and abandonement of his son.
I also think that Plainview could have been more savage in his hunt for control over Boston Fields and more. With a title like "There Will Be Blood", I was disappointed to not see much blood at all, or even intention of wrong-doing by Plainview. I wanted his greed to surface more often and with great intensity. I think that Paul Thomas Anderson and Day-Lewis dropped the ball in creating a really great villainous tycoon.
The score suits the film and the cinematography and simple long-take editing are what I adore about films, and this film made great use of it. I wish more films would.

 Re: There Will Be Blood
Oh Daniel Plainview, he's such a dreamboat...
That being said, this film has lost a lot of its gravity with me over time, but yeah, Daniel Day Lewis is absolutely captivating in this.
Also, Algren, I believe the shift in focus is suppose to be a mirror on the shift within Plainview himself. As the film is a character piece, the tone of the film should shift with the character, and so should the focus.
