This movie is very much a character study. It relies on theme rather than plot, which is pretty evident. I'm not surprised by all of the "it's weird" comments, because to most viewers it certainly appears that way.
I personally loved the movie. There is a stark contrast between the life of "Tom" in the country land and the life (or previous life) of "Joey" in the city. I think that's a great move by Cronenberg, and it makes the ending of the movie all the more shocking, really. We only really get a glimpse of it with the bar fight earlier in the movie.

I just can't get over any of the bullying scenes, especially right after Viggo's son catches the fly ball. The batters reaction is so farfetched and unrealistic. Laughable. And the locker room scene, when the bully for some reason just gives up and goes "GOD!" like a little girl. Hilarious really.

I was listening to Cronenberg's commentary and according to him, this is the first mainstream American film to depict... the 69.

Sadly, only, um... "specialty" films have tackled that intricate position.

I surprisingly loved this movie, which which was fascinating thematically as well. Superb performances all around, with a chillig ending that stays with you. The film didn't really hit me on an emotional level, but it's great, nonetheless.

Saw the movie for the third time yesterday and it's growing on me. Could reach an A with the next viewing.

I liked it a little more than I expected. I thought it was perfectly cast. The actor who played the son was quite good. My grade: A-.

I wasn't impressed when I saw this movie [x] years ago, and I was even less impressed now.

 Re: A History of Violence
Lol I tried to watch this film like 4 times but always got interrupted to do something..
So finally was able to watch it on TV last night and its nothing special but pretty solid.
Seeing all the struggles and such was great and you did cheer for the character.
Solid Film B+

 Re: A History of Violence
This is quite the overrated film.
I don't understand the heaps of praise being dumped on it by how different it is, or whatever, when the scenes all are carbon copies of scenes you've seen before or expect from this kind of movie. The story is lightweight and I do not agre with critics or posters that it can be overlooked whilst saying at the same time it is a fresh take or something of that sort.
The whole exploration of a family's coming to terms with "a history of violence" is also very much understated. The direction was good, but besides the last scene, everything was meh.
"Captivating" and whatever else seems like people trying to fit in rather than their actual opinion.

 Re: A History of Violence
Such a great movie. There really is a lack of R-rated adult thrillers made nowadays - it's all CGI'd monsters and animals or disposeable rom com's. A History of Violence is realistic, gripping and violent, and more of these movies need to be made. The last one I can think of was Drive.

Is that Headhunters directed by Renny Harlin?
I want to see Lawless.

 Re: A History of Violence
The Harlin film is Mindhunters, which I, lol, saw in theatres.
Headhunters is a recent Norwegian film.

Ahhh, yeah, that's it. I remember when that came out, I guess I dodged a bullet on that bad boy. Apparently it's crap. Ok, Headhunters is on my list. Thanks
