'Transformers' revs up overseas

'Die Hard' foreign cume now $84.3 million
By DAVE MCNARY
http://www.variety.com/article/VR111796 ... id=13&cs=1

"Transformers" is the first international leader in 10 weekends that isn't a sequel -- a victory made sweeter by the fact that pic hasn't even opened yet in many major markets. Tentpole made $43.6 million from 3,503 playdates in 29 markets.

"Live Free or Die Hard," known as "Die Hard 4" in most foreign markets, showed plenty of muscle with a solid $41.4 million at 6,773 in 49 markets -- 14 of them new -- for a foreign cume of $84.3 million.

With "Shrek the Third" staying sturdy overseas with an additional $33.5 million haul, overall biz remained in overdrive as the top three pics combined for $118 million -- well ahead of the same weekend a year ago, when "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "Cars" and "Over the Hedge" took in a total of $81 million.

During the past nine frames, "Shrek the Third," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and "Spider-Man 3" each won three times -- accumulating more than $1.5 billion in international coin in the process.

With overseas moviegoers sparking to the current crop of tentpoles, 2007 foreign grosses for the six major studios are now 13% ahead of last year's record-setting pace.

That's likely to continue in coming weeks with "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" launching Wednesday; the four prior "Potter" pics combined for $2.4 billion overseas.

Paramount's "Transformers," with launches in 19 new territories, showed impressive offshore traction with a socko $12,418 per-location average -- by far the best among current pics.

Foreign cume has already hit $93.6 million, even though the sci-fier's yet to open in many major markets, including the U.K., Japan, Germany and France; global box office is already at $246 million.

Foreign results for "Transformers" have come in at the high end of studio expectations and ahead of previous pics directed by Michael Bay.

"Looking at the global market, the thing that we are seeing is that it doesn't matter what language you see it in, or what language you speak; the visuals that Michael Bay accomplished are spectacular, and the movie has a great sense of fun. The movie plays wherever you are," Paramount prexy of worldwide marketing and distribution Rob Moore said.

"Transformers" performed best in Russia, with a launch of $8.3 million; its second Korean frame, off 40% to $7.9 million; its Spanish opening with $5.2 million; and its Australian soph sesh with $3.8 million, down 45%. It also posted the fourth-biggest launches ever in the Ukraine and the UAE and grossed at least $1 million in Holland, New Zealand, Sweden and Ukraine.

Yeah I know, by the end of Summer we'll already have the biggest year in terms of overseas Box Office grosses.....let's see, potentiall 2 $600m films (unprecedented), 2 $450m+ films (SM3 and Shrek 3), potentially 2 $300m films (Transformers and Simpsons).....then you have Die Hard 4, Rush Hour 3, Ratatouille all looking like they could hit $250m.

Then we have Winter, National Treasure should do at least $250m overseas as well, GOlden Compass easily $300m if it hits, I Am Legend ($200m).... :hahaha:

Then thrown in Mr. bean's Holiday and 300 and voila....huge year :hahaha:

SCreendaily Article

The apocalyptic robots of Transformers just about did enough to keep
Bruce Willis at bay as Paramount/DreamWorks' Transformers ruled the
overseas market at the weekend.

The action epic grossed an estimated $43.6m from 3,503 venues in 29
territories following last weekend's robust take-off and now stands at
$93.6m.

Meanwhile Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) top brass were
celebrating as the distributor crossed $1bn in overseas receipts in
record time on Saturday [7], smashing its own industry speed record
set last year on Aug 24.

Returning to Transformers, the film opened in 19 territories including
Russia, where director Michael Bay enjoyed a personal best number one
launch of $8.3m from 394 sites. Spain also produced a table-topping
result and a new record for Bay on $5.2m from 706 sites.

Elsewhere Transformers opened top in the Netherlands and Sweden on
$1.4m from 111 and $1.3m from 88 respectively, with another personal
best for the director in Sweden.

The Ukraine produced $1m from 89 screens for a new Bay record, Denmark
generated $800,000 from 68 sites, Hungary delivered $477,000 from 40
sites, Finland produced a number one $366,000 results from 41 screens,
and there was an excellent number one launch in Turkey on $992,000
from 160.

The UAE generated the industry's fourth biggest opening and a record
for Bay on $781,000 from 38 screens, while the director enjoyed
another new record in Portugal on $596,000 from 64 screens.

The film held on to its top berth in Australia in the second weekend
despite a 45% drop, as $3.8m from 231 screens raised the tally there
to $13.5m. It fell 40% in South Korea on $7.9m from 559 sites to an
excellent $25.5m, and 23% in New Zealand where it also held on to the
number one spot on $1m from 63 screens for $3m.

==================

Do you know which figure pleases me the most, it's the New Zealand one  , down just 23% to $3m. After 2 weekends, it's tracking 2nd only to ROTK....yes bigger than AWE, King Kong, and the 2 Shreks. Mind you it was a school holiday weekend.....Shrek 3 increased by 40%+ or something....that one is at $4.5m after 4 or 5 weekends.

Transformers will definately finish with around $5-6m there....huge take.

South Korea is fantastic, it's US$ gross is slightly behind Spiderman 3 and Pirates 3 but is apparently beating both in terms of admissions. This one is well positioned to take Misson Impossible 3 as the 2nd largest foreign release of all-time, who knows, even ROTK may not be safe from Prime and his gang.

AUSTRALIA (AUD$) - Weekend 2

Transformers holds extremely well for such a fan-driven movie....it has just overtaken Spiderman 3 and The Da Vinci Code......still tracking inside the Top 20 films.

Harry Potter 5 opens in just 2 days, so it'll be interesting to see how Transformers handles the boy-wizard. Though with school holidays still in session, it'll be one hectic week regardless. Transformers is currently headed for $25-30m.

I had a look, yes it's Russian

The Italian (M)

now showing | sessions
Director: Andrei Kravchuk
Starring: Kolya Spiridonov, Denis Moiseenko

Russian dialogue with English subtitles

In his feature directorial debut, director Andrei Kravchuk addresses with intelligence and poignancy the plight of illegal adoption in Russia, which has become a well-documented international crisis. The Italian is based on the true story of a small Russian boy abandoned in an orphanage who goes in search of his birth mother. The Italian has been the recipient of 30 international awards.

Yes Rumpel as Omega has shown - that is a Russian film. It had done quite well in limited release here. Friends of mine have seen it and liked it.

International was underestimated as well:
$46.7m this weekend (instead of $43.6m) for a new total of $96.7m

$96.7m+155.4m=$252.1m worldwide...

Hahah, for some reason I knew it was going to be underestimated, especially Domestic where the Sunday drop is much larger than I would expect....

TAIPEI (TWD) - Weekend 2

What a brillaint 2nd weekend drop, just 18%, it's the 3rd largest 2nd weekend of all-time in Taipei behind only HP2 and TTT.

What this means is that after a solid opening last week, it has rocketed up the charts, overtaking Spiderman 3 and sitting only 8m TWD behind AWE (which has just passed DMC's lifetime gross in Taipei by the way).

Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End - 116,595,571 (21,847,737, -47.3%) - 20
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - 115,442,405 (25,712,350, -29.1%) - 21
Kung Fu Hustle - 114,421,980 (22,134,710, -50.8%)*NY - 20
Transformers - 108,126,133 (26,231,391, -18.8%) - 19
Harry Potter 4: GOF - 108,051,230 adms. (26,084,670, -38.9%) - 22
Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest - 106,476,724 (19,815,668, -44.4%) - 20
Harry Potter 2: COS - 103,876,650 (30,390,930, -25%) - 19
Spiderman 2 - 102,396,170 (18,448,190, -46.8%) - 21
The Da Vinci Code - 101,577,849 (16,780,830, -55.7%) - 20
Spiderman 3 - 99,761,200 (14,314,195, -56.3%) - 19
War Of The Worlds - 96,254,700 (12,073,145, -63.5%) - 21
The Day After Tomorrow - 94,131,415 (19,000,720, -48.4%) - 18

Lord Of The Rings: TTT - 92,655,810 (26,651,820, -6.8%) - 18
Mr. And Mrs. Smith - 91,047,145 (18,333,805, -40.7%) - 18
King Kong - 87,423,850 (21,737,185, -27.8%) - 21
Mission Impossible 3 - 84,218,119 (16,195,778, -46.3%) - 20

TAIPEI (US$) - Weekend 2

I am guessing Europeans are waiting for HP5 hence not uber blockbuster type money in Europe.

Also I am very surprised by LFODH european performance which has been pretty damn good even with competetion from Transformers.

I am really worried about Transformers boxoffice in UK. The movie is releasing against The Simpsons movie and will have two movies LFODH and Shrek 3 that will still be making some good money.
