25 million wouldn't be a sign of being a disappointment (yet). But Avengers did 19m with strictly midnights.

If it only managed $25 million from 7 to close I don't think that is all that great. That would put in line for an opening day on par with the originals - assuming the $25 million is counted - but I don't expect Saturday or Sunday to keep pace.

We've come to this. I remember very clearly getting excited off of Lost World's $72 million OW. The fledgling online box-office community was stunned. $26 million...on a Sunday? $72 million in a weekend? How? What?

Now, $25 million from 7-12a receipts can be seen as a disappointment.

I'm not passing judgement just noting how perceptions (and inflation adjusted dollars) have changed so dramatically in 20 years.

25m is about what I expected for midnights/previews. There's a cap on the # of hardcore fans who *need* to see this immediately. There is no "finale factor" as with TDKR or DHII to drive the casual market to see the AoU in it's very first showings.

if it only does 25m 7-midnight last night, it aint matching that today 7 m to midnight. its going to have to do gangbusters during the day to match the originals opening day

How on earth is it making 250m OW with 25m or even 30m previews. I dont see how anyone can expect better non-midnight gross for Avengers. With 7PM release you would expect folks preferring shows at good time to check it out on OD. I think with 25M previews, it aint breaking OD record for sure. Even OW record is not locked though its possible. AOU will be less backloaded than Avengers for sure. Specially with a saturated release.

Additionally, The Dark Knight Rises was in July. This is May 1st - pretty much everyone is still in school. I would absolutely consider $25m solid and a $90m OD possible with such a result.

Isn't it a May Day Bank Holiday weekend? I thought schools were off.

Per RenTrak, only 2.5% of public schools are out as of this weekend.

I predicted 28 million, great start. Definitely could flirt with 100 million, but I think OD is looking really good now. Avengers managed 62 million after previews, I'd be surprised if it fell below that.

EPIC FAIL. But it set the bar too high. I dont think we will see 250m in the near future as well. I doubt there is that much interest to hit a number that high.

I don't think a film even has a shot at this until Star Wars: Episode VIII.

I dont see SW making that much. People are way overstimating the potential of SW flicks. That was the center gravity in pre-franchise/sequel era. Now we have dime a dozen of them. Plus prequels are horrible films(Even Sith has not aged well). While JJ is a decent director I doubt he will be able to take it OT level for sure.

You cannot set anticipation for a sequel if it releases 15 months after the 1st one plus there is another spinoff releasing in between. Back then 3 year gap helps build anticipation to fever pitch. Disney will kill this goose in not too distant future.

250 million ain't happening for any movie ever. I'd also bet money that 100 OD will never happen, Potter will keep its OD and midnight forever, and Avengers its OW forever.

250m OW will happen. But not in near year or two. May be Avatar sequel will open in summer and will have something crazy new. Or may be Zack suddenly makes awesome Bvs and JL1 and then sequel does. Infinity War 2 could do it if its out of the world.

Inflation alone will make sure it happens eventually.
