We have a goo dchance of surging ahead of last year this weekend....
If Underworld can open above 30 million and both Hoodwinked and Brokeback Mountain hold well, we will pass it for sure....here is what the top 10 looked like last year..
1 N Are We There Yet? $18,575,214
2 1 Coach Carter Par. $10,548,599 -56.4%
3 2 Meet the Fockers Uni. $9,683,260 -49.9%
4 3 In Good Company Uni. $7,989,410 -44.1%
5 4 Racing Stripes WB $6,815,275 -51.0%
6 N Assault on Precinct 13 Rog. $6,502,724 -
7 6 White Noise Uni. $4,988,480 -58.7%
8 7 The Aviator Mira. $4,837,872 -4.3%
9 9 The Phantom of the Opera WB $4,555,434 +24.2%
10 5 Elektra Fox $3,964,598 -69.0%
The holdovers absolutley collapsed last year... so all we need is some decent holds from last weekends openers...
Here's how I am see this weekend...
1. Underworld -- 27 million
2. Hoodwinked -- 10 million
3. Brokeback Mountain -- 8 million
4. Glory Road -- 7.5 million
5. Last Holiday -- 7 million
6. Narnia -- 6 million
7. Dick and Jane -- 6 million
8. Hostel -- 4 million
9. The New World -- 4 million
10. End of the Spear -- 4 million

Good idea (even if you didn't realize you were suggesting one). Can we make a list for a few years prior as well? And that way we can compare for broader trends as well?
Welcome!

Here's USA TODAY'S Breakdown of how they feel about the 2006 year compared to 2005.. There saying X3 is the swan song for the franchise.. Didn't they hear about an X4 and X5 or maybe X3 really is it??

If it makes as much as Day After Tomorrow did for Fox over Memorial Day weekend, there'll be another one. Heck, Fox is so sequel-happy (isn't Big Momma's House 2 enough proof of that? <G>) that I'm surprised they didn't greenlight "The Day After The Day After Tomorrow" the Tuesday after it opened.
I think the problem is that they're probably going to be losing some of their cast with this one or else they know they'll be priced out of making it affordable to make a 4th movie.

Big Momma's House -- 18 million
Underworld:Evolution -- 12 million
Nanny McPhee -- 12 million
Hoodwinked -- 8 million
Brokeback Mountain -- 7 million
Annapolis -- 7 million
Last Holiday -- 6.5 million
Glory Road -- 6.5 million
The Matador -- 6 million
Narnia -- 5 million
FDAJ -- 4 million
Walk the Line -- 3 million
Top 12 Total : 95 million
Could be close....

Still too early to tell. Remember we had a strong Jan last year, and look how that year turned out!

$99,373,000 this weekend, versus $104,449,103 last year.
We're down a little, but it's not too surprising because lots of films barely dropped last year due to the snowstorm the weekend before. I think we'll rebound next weekend.

Plus, let's not forget that The Chronicles of Narnia, King Kong, and Brokeback Mountain (among others) are contributing some of their grosses to 2006. Only $12 million of Brokeback's final gross will go to 2005, while the rest will go to 2006.
As of right now, this is how 2006 looks (from Jan. 1 - Jan. 29):

Does BOM count every movie when making the YTD charts, or just each weekends top 12?

Still a good lead, even though the weekend was behind.
This weekend could beat it. Even without a $40 million opener (like Hitch last year), all the openers should open well.

I think 06 has only lost one weekend so far. Very good.

The $100m lead over 04 is very good. It will be needed to counter TPOTC.
