Post Upping the Ante Here: Madagascar Will Top SW3
I mean, not only will it win the Memorial Day Weekend, but it will outgross SW3's total.

I also predict one of the top 4 opening weekends of 2005 with $70-80m, if not more. Remember that it is MMDWknd, so the Sunday acts like a second Sat. And we all know how well family films do on Saturdays...

*Gasp; Shock* Happy?

No I dont think it'll get 70m over the weekend. At first I was thinking Dinosaur type numbers  But considering Shrek 2 made 72m second weekend there is hope for this one. But right now about $50million is safe, 200million total. It WONT beat SW3

I agree. Given what we have seen with Shrek, Shrek 2, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Shark Tale, I think it is clear that a summer date is much better for CG animated films then any other time of the year. I think that Madagascar will probably top 300m. Meanwhile, I think that SW will continue to slump with 280m. Whatever fans say, being the final in a trilogy does not seem to help the BO.

Just in case someone tries to use Incredibles lower total gross as an example of CGI movies dying out, I would say that a long time agao Incredibles would had a harder time appealing to kids since its not about cutesey animals or creatures. Madagascar has ann the CGI animals to appeal to kids so I don't see it doing anywhere below The Incredibles number.

Yup, thanks for pointing that out Roid. The thing with The Incredibles is that is it anything but a kids film; I'm frankly surprised it did so well; it's much more in tune with The Iron Giant, which performed poorly at the box office.

This one seems to be mindless fun, Shrek-like. It is (prolly) funny, cute, doesn't require much thought, and comes at a time when the kids begin getting out of school. Sounds like a big hit alright.

if its anything like shrek/drek 2 Im only going to watch it for the penuins 8) but if its anywhere near as good as the first shrek than there wont be a stick out character to like most which usualy make a movie better IMO 8)

I think it could make over 50 million more then Star Wars.

Right now:
Madagascar: 335 million
Star Wars: 280 million

It is entirely possible, I wouldn't even consider it a crazy call actually. Seriously, each year there is a huge CGI animated flick and what do we have this year? No Pixar. Then we have Chicken Little (opening in November will hurt) and Robots (which will do like Ice Age at best). Madagascar has a good trailer and expect the studio to advertise the heck out of it with "FROM THE MAKERS OF SHREK". I consider the film a lock for $200 million and a near-lock for $250 million, but much more is just as possible if the movie is actually better than Shark Tale.

Even Shark Tale would have gotten close to 200 million if it was released in the summer.

I do not agree at the moment, but I think it is very possible.

I originally thought the same, until I saw the trailer, which looks to have less appeal than Shark Tale (whose below-Ice Age opening was disapointing, since it was from the "makers of Shrek 2"). Madagascar will not gross over The Incredibles or eclipse Meet the Fockers as Stiller's highest grossing film. I don't think it will do Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban numbers either. The Day After Tomorrow territory is probably the most likely, with a lot lower opening but longer legs.

Most people actually agreed with this? Madagascar will not cross $300 million. It won't even cross $250 million. I'll bet on it. Star Wars will be the champ in not only this battle, but the battle for top movie of the year.

Its possible, but I see it more of a $250-$260m total max! And that would be incredible BO.

Just remember when was the last time the expected No.1 film of the summer actually finished No.1?? There is no guarantee for ROTS -

Here have a look:

2004 - Spiderman 2 expected, Shrek 2 wins.
2003 - Matrix Reloaded expected, Finding Nemo (and Pirates) beat it!
2002 - AOTC expected, Spiderman sneaks past and wins.
2001 - Pearl Harbour expected to dominate, Shrek (and Rush Hour and Mummy Returns) defeat it.
1998 - Godzilla expected, Private Ryan wins (eventualy ahead of Armageddon)
1997 - Lost World expected, MIB wins.

You get the picture.

Only Mission Impossible 2 won the summer as expected in 00 (though lost the year to Grinch and Castaway) and offcourse TPM in 99.

So the favourite rarely wins.

I think that Madagascar will do great but I highly doubt it will pass Star Wars 3, but I still think that it is possible though.

I dont think it has even a chance...as everyone knows my theatre does INSANE bussiness with kids movies (why i did so well in Nov. with the derby, it was nothing but family films :P sorry had to throw that in :P ), well every movie we have had this trailer on just has not had the same reaction as other kid type movies, people just dont seem that interested...

Unless they pull a DIsney and make a better trailer closer to release I dont even see this movie making over 200 mill...

they will have a better trailer. They gave us a peak at the Penguins in the first one. Yet the Lemurs have their own poster and we haven't seen anything from them yet. This is gonna be big. It'll top Star Wars or War of the Worlds, but not both.

I don't see any big obsession with Madagascar. I guess I should see the trailer. But, topping Star Wars? I don't see it. Hang on, I'll check the trailer again, in case I saw the wrong one and am thinking of the wrong movie.
