Personally, so far I have seen only Toy Story 1 & 2, A Bug's Life and The Incredibles. This is how I'd rank them:

Without a dominate force in the international market Ocean's Twelve secured pole position with just a $22.6 million weekend gross from 5,183 prints in 46 markets. That mark is insignificant next to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's $82.5 million gross from this weekend last year. A combination of films, however, made up for The Lord of the Ring's absence. Ocean's Twelve, The Incredibles, The Polar Express, new entry Kung Fu Hustle, as well as dozens of other productions helped this year's weekend nearly match last year's.

Despite only two openings over the weekend Ocean's Twelve was able to capture first place and improve its total to $67.8 million. The biggest start came in Mexico where the picture grossed $1.8 million (Pesos 20.4 million) from 550 screens. That rather soft start was good for its genre though as it topped Catch Me If You Can by 11% and was just shy of Ocean's Eleven by 2%. Its more impressive opening came from Belgium. There the star-studded caper easily ranked No. 1 with a $1.2 million (€1.2 million) from 75 screens. That was only 9% behind the original in Euros and 39% better in US$. It was also Warner Brother's second biggest opening of the year behind Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

In holdovers Twelve was superb. In its second session in France the sequel grabbed $4.2 million (€3.1 million) from 789 prints, a fall of 44% from its phenomenal debut. It was again No. 1 and improved its total to $14.1 million (€10.6 million). Spain's second weekend take of $2.4 million (€1.8 million) from 427 prints, was just a 31% drop from its opening and also remained No. 1. Its total there improved to $7 million (€5.26 million). In Italy it grossed $2.9 million (€2.2 million) from 400 prints for a $6.24 million (€4.7 million) total, off 33% while in Germany it fell 51% to $2.6 million (€1.9 million) for a $9.654 million (€7.253 million) total.

Ocean's Twelve has proved that Ocean's Eleven was an enormous hit. It seems Eleven's openings were about as saturated (in attendance) as a crime caper can be. With mostly dialogue and no action, Eleven grossed about as high as a film of that nature could get. Twelve has just about matched all of Eleven's openings and fallen at about the same rate.

The Incredibles continued another magical Pixar run. In the tradition of all Pixar films The Incredibles has had fabulous holds in all markets. Over the weekend the picture grossed $21.1 million on 6,273 screens in 49 territories for a $228.3 million total. Boxing Day was fantastic for The Incredibles in both the U.K. and Australia. Reopening after Christmas Eve and Day theaters in the U.K. were very kind to The Incredibles on Sunday, or Boxing Day. The picture grossed $1.1 million on that day lifting the six-week total to $46 million. In Australia the Brad Bird helmed production grossed $1.4 million on 286 screens in Boxing day, setting the single-day animated record.

China flexed its muscle in the international marketplace last weekend with its own production in Kung Fu Hustle (Gong fu). The Stephen Chow action/comedy had a stunning weekend session in five markets over the weekend including China where the picture set the opening weekend record with a $7,766,623 weekend take from 492 screens ($6,524,497 three-day). In local currency it topped House of Flying Daggers by just 400,000 Yuans. That wasn't the only record to fall. In Hong Kong the comical gangster tale grossed $3,232,208 from 92 screens to record the highest opening ever. Taiwan joined the gang as well. Official numbers for the entire weren't yet available, but in Taipei the picture grossed $1,884,845 from 45 screens.

Kung Fu Hustle opened No. 1 in its two other markets as well. Singapore, the only market slightly affected by the enormous 9.0 earthquake that struck Asia on Sunday, recorded $1,155,932 from 46 screens while Malaysia produced a $956,456 weekend take from 52 screens. Singapore's opening was the second biggest ever and Malaysia was the third biggest ever.

The Polar Express grossed $10.5 million weekend from 6,000 prints in 59 countries for an $83.8 million total. The picture had three impressive Asian openings. Leading the way was South Korea's $1.3 million start from 118 prints. That enormous opening topped The Grinch by 343%, Scooby-Doo by 326%, and Cats and Dogs by 92%. Hong Kong followed with a $381,900 weekend from 31 prints, to rank second behind Kung Fu Hustle, but outperformed Ice Age by 108% and The Grinch by 25%. In Thailand the animated Christmas feature grossed $199,000 from 46 prints, ranking second and besting The Grinch by 4%.

National Treasure had a $7.9 million weekend from 2,295 playdates in 20 territories lifting its total to $52 million. It wasn't too hot in its single-day debut in the U.K., grossing $620,000 on 340, but its $515,000 Turkish opening set the mark for the biggest opening ever for Disney live action picture.

Howl's Moving Castle continued Hayao Miyazaki's magic. Despite playing in its sixth weekend in Japan the picture grossed $5.6 million over the weekend for a $108.8 million total. $200 million is almost a guarantee now with $300 million certainly not out of reach. Moving Castle had a surprising start in its first non-Japanese market. In South Korea the picture grossed a very strong $3.8 million from 243 screens. Should Moving Castle have international success the picture could slide into the top 10 all time in worldwide grosses biggest of its enormous success in Japan.

Alexander wasn't too impressive in its first major market (excluding Russia). In Germany the picture grossed $1.9 million from 499 screens over the four-day weekend. The debut was certainly better, comparatively, than its U.S. premiere, but wasn't as good as its Eastern European and Asian starts. In neighboring Austria the picture finished third with a decent $311,582 opening from 76 screens. Its Grecian total climbed to $2.3 million after fourth weeks.

Ocean's Twelve, Polar Express Hit $100 Mil Abroad

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Unlike the United States, where moviegoing is part of the New Year's celebration, most of the rest of the world was a lot more low-key over the holiday weekend.

In many overseas markets, especially Europe, theaters generally shut down New Year's Eve and forgo matinee business on New Year's Day.

Still, "Ocean's Twelve" managed to gross an estimated $21 million abroad over the weekend, followed by "The Incredibles" with an estimated $20.3 million. Because of the holiday, full returns were not available from all markets and all figures are estimates.

Also entrancing holiday merrymakers over the weekend were "National Treasure" ($11.2 million), "The Polar Express" ($8 million), and "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" ($6.3 million).

Stephen Chow's Chinese-language action comedy "Kung Fu Hustle" punched its way to $10.1 million in six Asian markets, with Japan opening to $3.2 million, second to long-running local sensation "Howl's Moving Castle," which is close to reaching $100 million in the home market alone.

"Ocean's Twelve" has earned about $107 million abroad, with Japan on tap Jan. 21 and the United Kingdom on Feb. 4.

"The Incredibles" shot up to $275 million overseas, and was No. 1 again in France where it has stayed at the top for four out of six weeks, taking in $37.9 million to date. The United Kingdom has provided $52.4 million in seven weeks and Japan $32.8 million in five.

"Polar Express" has earned about $101.2 million overseas, while "National Treasure" hoisted its total to $68 million.

I haven't paid as much attention. Is National Treasure's overseas run mediocre compared to domestic so far? :?

Well, actually, it has done really well in all the markets it has been released in so far. I think it's just in the middle of an international roll-out, it'll still hit some major markets like Japan and has a great run in France and UK ahead of it.

I have no idea how it could have passed $100 million overseas all of sudden. I man it stood at around $83 million last weekend. It must have had an amazing weekend overseas, it seems.

It was actually a good week ($10 mil.) compared to the weekend ($8 mil.)

I just noticed its weekend gross, I thought it wasn't stated. Well, I am glad it corssed the mark and stands at $255+ million worldwide. I expect another $10 million in the USA along and probably the same sum from overseas. It still has Turkey ahead of it to open on January 13th. So it should make at least $275 milion worldwide.

That sounds about right. With the holidays and New Year over most of the older movies playing overseas, will die down pretty quick. The exception will be Ocena's 12, National Treasure to some extent (not opened in some major ter.) and Meet the Fockers. MTF will make a klling overseas.

Still dont think it will make $300M ww then like me. lol

I just think it'll be pulled out of most theatres very soon.

Well, but thy need space for new movies and if I look at Germany, it is not making THAT much money anymore. It was one of the few movies that actually dropped last weekend.

Ocean's Twelve had another fantastic session at the international box office last weekend, grossing $20.9 million from 4,900 prints in 49 countries. Its total reached $107.3 million with Japan and the U.K. still ahead.

The sequel had two openings over the weekend including its first place start in South Africa where it grossed $526,700 from 69 prints. The debut was 5% ahead of Ocean's Eleven in terms of local currency and 115% better in US$. It had to settle for second place in Taiwan, behind record-breaking Kung Fu Hustle. Twelve still grossed an excellent $1.069 million from 104 screens. It was on par in US$, but 9% bellow in local currency.

Twelve's European holdovers contributed most of its weekend gross. In its third weekend in France the star-studded sequel grossed a stunning $3.5 million from 789 prints, off just 16% to rank second. That pushed its already impressive total to $19.2 million. In Germany it actually improved by 8% to $2.8 million from 827 prints. Its first place finish helped improve its three-weekend total to $15.2 million. Italy supplied $2.7 million from 480 prints, off just 9% for a fourth place finish and a $10.9 million total. Spain was off 27% to $1.758 million from 428 prints, but remained in pole position and pushed its total to $10.1 million. In the Netherlands Ocean's Twelve fell just 10% to $785,800 from 135 prints for a $4.3 million total and a first place finish. Neighboring Belgium contributed $735,600 from 70 prints over the weekend for a first place finish, just a 19% drop, and a two-weekend total of $2.3 million.

In its fourth week in Australia the Steven Soderberg-helmed production grossed $837,000 from 245 prints, which was up 25% from the previous week. Its fourth place rank moved its total to $10.068 million. It also grossed $1 million from 550 prints in its second weekend in Mexico for a $4.8 million total.

The Polar Express had extraordinary holds in Europe and Japan over the weekend, which led to an $8.3 million gross from 4,800 prints in 59 countries. That lifted its total past the century mark to $101.65 million.

In its fifth weekend in France it increased 2% to $1.523 million from 670 prints. Thanks to staying above the $1 million mark every weekend The Polar Express has grossed a superb $10.8 million. The Tom Hanks headliner was off 16% in its fourth weekend in the U.K., grossing $1.124 million from 452 sites. That pushed its total there to $15.9 million. Japan grew by 25% in its sixth weekend for a $728,000 weekend haul and a $9.8 million total. Spain was off only 15% to $560,000 from 326 prints for a $6.8 million total while Germany fell 22% to $437,000 from 720 prints for a $9.156 million total. In its fifth weekend in Italy The Polar Express was off just 2% for a $302,000 total from 300 prints and a $5.5 million total.

Express' staggering print counts have kept the money rolling. Warner Brothers has done an excellent job generating screens especially since it opened disappointingly in the U.S. It seems, however, that only word-of-mouth is keeping this film alive, which means WB's advertising could have generated more business in its openings across the globe. Nonetheless The Polar Express is becoming a blockbuster overseas however slow.

Chinese action/comedy Kung Fu Hustle generated another impressive opening over the weekend. After record-breaking debuts in five markets last weekend, the Stephen Chow-directed picture grossed a spectacular $3,195,947 from 368 screens in its two-day opening in Japan. That was one of the ten best openings ever for an Asian picture (excluding Japanese films).

Hustle remained No. 1 in local China, grossing a stunning $3,733,462 from 492 screens, falling 42% from its record-breaking debut for a $14,240,234 total. The picture also stayed on top in Hong Kong, grossing $1,496,589 from 91 screens, off 54%, for a $6,179,622 total. Kung Fu Hustle also remained No. 1 in its three other markets; Malaysia - $534,373 from 52 for a $1,858,985 total, Singapore - $580,014 from 46 for a $2,168,956 total, and Taiwan - $689,932 from 45 for a $7,442,045 total.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason grossed $3,806,697 at 2,115 dates in 21 territories last weekend lifting its international total to $176,242,375.

Bridget maintained top 10 places in two major markets over the weekend. It was No. 8 in the U.K. improving its 52-day total to $65,696,482. In its fifth week in Germany it was No. 6 with a 32-day total of $14,914,660.

The Edge of Reason still has 11 more territories to open including Italy on Jan. 7.

The Phantom of the Opera opened in sixth place in New Zealand over the weekend, grossing $127,086 at 48 dates. In Australia, Phantom finished its first week with a gross of $1,658,026 for an 8-day cume is $1,808,522.

Vets reign in Europe; 'Hustle' muscles Asia

"Alexander" triumphed in South Korea and Sony's Chinese-lingo "Kung Fu Hustle" continued to dominate other parts of Asia last weekend, while the B.O. in Europe was starved of new product and had to rely on holdovers including "The Incredibles," "Ocean's Twelve" and "Shrek 2."
While the U.S. biz is being powered by "Meet the Fockers," the ribald laffer has been released abroad only in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. "Fockers" rustled up a socko $11.8 million in eight days in Oz, but its opening weekend figures in the two Asian markets weren't available due to the Monday public holiday. Sony reported that its action comedy "Kung Fu Hustle" beat "Fockers" as it retained pole position in its soph session in both countries.

Weekend champ "The Incredibles" drew an estimated $21.3 million from around 7,000 screens in 49 territories, propelling cume past domestic's to $274.9 million. Pixar toon garnered a terrif $9.2 million in eight days Down Under. Incredibly, the pic was No. 1 in its seventh outing in the U.K., fetching $2.5 million (jumping by 140% during school vacation), upping the territory total to $53 million. Superhero saga stayed on top for the third straight weekend in Mexico, hauling in $11.9 million.

"Ocean's Twelve" made off with a projected $20.9 million from 4,900 prints in 49 countries, boosting cume to $107.3 million. Crime caper stole $1 million on 104 screens in Taiwan (trailing "Hustle's" second weekend), in local currency 9% below the first edition's preem, and a top-ranked $527,000 on 69 in South Africa, 5% ahead of "Ocean's Eleven." Star-driven pic was No. 1 again in its third stanzas in Germany, banking $15.2 million to date, and Spain, where it's amassed $10.1 million.

'Alexander' victorious

"Alexander" captured an estimated $4.4 million on 270 in South Korea, including previews, in part reflecting the market clout of exhib/distrib CJ Entertainment. Oliver Stone's epic drummed up $1.8 million in Germany, off just 6%, pocketing $5.8 million in 11 days. Cume hit $43.5 million in 26 territories, heading for north of $100 million with most of Europe, Japan and Oz ahead.

"Kung Fu Hustle" grabbed $10.2 million from 1,095 screens in six Asian markets and cume topped $35 million. Based on a sample of 48 theaters in Japan, Sony projected the pic bowed there with a fine $3.2 million on 368 screens in a traditionally soft weekend before kids go on vacation. It was a solid No. 2 behind local animated phenom "Howl's Moving Castle."

Through its second weekends, "Hustle" has rustled up an acrobatic $14.2 million in China (down 42% from its record-breaking preem), $6.2 million in Hong Kong, $7.4 million in Taiwan, $2.2 million in Singapore and $1.8 million in Malaysia.

'Aviator' soars in U.K.

"The Aviator" continued to draw crowds at its London platform, earning an estimated $114,000; 10-day tally is an impressive $311,000. "House of Flying Daggers" has trapped a superb $3 million in eight days in Blighty, lifting cume to $63.4 million.

"National Treasure" dug up $11.5 million, spurred by South Korea's estimated $2.6 million bow, a local record for BVI, toppling "King Arthur." Nicolas Cage starrer's cume hit $70 million, including the U.K.'s sturdy $6.9 million in eight days.

"The Polar Express" puffed along to $101.6 million after minting $8.3 million from holdovers at the weekend in 59 countries.

"Shrek 2" clung to top spot in its third chapter in Italy, devouring $4.1 million (falling by a mild 25%), driving the territory cume to a juicy $20 million and the offshore total to an estimated $464.3 million.

"Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera" is resonating better in Oz than in most Euro markets, orchestrating $2.3 million in eight days. Musical has rung up an estimated $12.4 million in the U.K. and an exceptional $11.4 million in Korea.
