In between those two Gonzalez's performance may have been ever better.

But, yeah, if Serena keeps up the desire to play tennis she will reascend to number one very quickly.

Gratz to Serena. 8 time Grand Slam Championne. She wiped Sharapova and nearly bagled here. Sharapova just went up against a player who was in the zone in addition to her serving issues and unforced errors.

What a nerve racking first set. Unexpected errors from both of them, Federer is going to have to improve his first serve and Gonzo is going to be thinking about that forehand at 5-4 40-30 if he eventually loses this match. This injury time out does not portend great things for Fernando.

An intense first set, although sloppy at times. Gonzo missed a big big opportunity there serving for the set with two set points. Federer couldn't get his first serve in for his life and had some forehand errors, but he played very well at the net (there were some tough volleys) and could still generate passing shots as usual. Gonzo didn't play all that bad, considering Federer's obvious strategy of playing to his backhand, and he should've won the set. The games after 4-4 were riveting. Unfortunately, a 5-setter may just have turned into a 3-setter.

It looks pretty windy down there. The ball has had some funny trajectories.

Yeah, the wind does seem to be having some effect. I think I remember Federer having difficulty with it earlier in the tournament as well. I don't think I've seen him miss such easy forehands before, and miss them by a good margin.

Yeah, Federer seems to have more trouble adjusting. Some of his forehand misses were by a big margin.

Good start by Ganzalez for the second set.

Gonzalez seems to be talking to himself much more this set, and Federer's serve has improved.

Doesn't look like Gonzalez can break Federer's serve now.

29 of his last 31 service points for Federer. That's a nice little stat.

R. Federer SUI [1] d. Fernando Gonzalez CHI [10] 7-6 6-4 6-4

After that first set breaker it was a routine match for Federer, handily held his own serve while getting a few looks at his opponent's and taking advantage of them. 10 GS for Federer, first man since 1980 to win a grand slam without losing a set. It wasn't the same level he beat Roddick with, but it'll do.

If Federer starts beating everyone the way he beat Roddick no man will bother playing tennis, that was a spirit breaking defeat.

I'd love to know just how much Roddick drank that night, I am guessing alot. I hope someone handed that man a bottle of tequila after the press conference.

Anyone else following what's going on with the round robin tournament in Vegas?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/6411211.stm

Round Robin in events other than the masters series seemed like a bad idea to begin with, and these recent events haven't done anything to change that perception.

It really is a huge cock up on behalf of the ATP, and they need to get these rules sorted ASAP if the round robin thing is ever going to take off. Federer voicing his opinions could be the nail in the coffin for the format.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/6416395.stm

Quote:
World number one Roger Federer has predicted that the men's tour will be forced to abandon the controversial round-robin system in tournaments.

His comments come after James Blake went out of the Las Vegas Open following a mix-up over the rules.

"I doubt it's going to happen next year, the round-robin system," Federer said. "I think it's a bad situation."

Personally i'm really not sure what to think on the topic.

Wow, Federer just lost in the first round of Indian Wells to Canas, who's claim to fame is that he's just coming back from a doping suspension.

Uh.....Who took over Serena's tennis game today. Sure she's facing the number one player in the world, but...

Justine is leading 6-0 1-0, just broke to open the second set...at love.

This is a pretty good match, on serve in the 3rd right now. Serena fought off 2 championship points in the 2nd, she seemed to come alive at the end there, then looked to dominate in the 3rd, but now Henin's the one who came back.

I wish I had been able to see this match. I read on espn she was 1 point from losing two times but she gutted it out and prevailed. Kudos to her. Hopefully she can add another FO to her mantle.

French Open has started.

Will Federer finally beat Nadal to win his first French Grand Slam??
