The NYY and Detroit Tigers are my two favorite teams... it's rough to watch the series as I don't know who to route for. I'm leaning slightly toward the underdog Tigers, but I really would like to see Mike Mussina finally get a ring and perhaps improve his chances at getting into the HoF.

Anyhow, I think people weren't giving Detroit enough credit to start this series. While I wouldn't have picked them to win (and still question whether they can), they only lost 2 less games than the Yankees in the regular season, and were in a much tougher division. Plus, they had one of the best ERA's in the major leagues (if not the best?) and pitching is key in the playoffs. So to me, it's not surprising they're putting up a great fight.

Buck O'Neil, the goodwill ambassador for the Negro Leagues who fell one vote short of the Hall of Fame, died Friday night. He was 94.

Bob Kendrick, marketing director for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, said O'Neil died at a Kansas City hospital.

A star in the Negro Leagues who barnstormed with Satchel Paige, O'Neil later became the first black coach in the majors. Baseball was his life - in July, he batted in a minor league All-Star game.

O'Neil had appeared strong until early August, when he was hospitalized for what was described as "fatigue." He was released a few days later, but readmitted on Sept. 17. Friends said that he had lost his voice along with his strength. No cause of death was immediately given.

Always projecting warmth, wit and a sunny optimism that sometimes seemed surprising for a man who lived in a climate of racial injustice for so long, O'Neil remained remarkably vigorous well into his 90s. He became as big a star as the Negro League greats whose stories he traveled the country to tell.

He would be in New York taping the "Late Show With David Letterman" one day, then back home on the golf course the next day shooting his age, a feat he first accomplished at 75.

"But it's not a good score any more," he quipped on his 90th birthday.

R.I.P Mr. O'Neil

Hasn't the team that BEATS the Yankees in the playoffs won the WS the past 5 years or so?

No, last season they lost to the Angels in the ALDS, which the Whitesoxs beat to win the WS.
They did lose to the eventual champs Redsox in the ALCS in '04 though.

Their celebration was well deserved. The Tigers have been so incredibly abysmal the last 19 years, and they were such massive underdogs in this series. It's been a lot of years since the city of Detroit saw a playoff win... the fans and players were just going nuts, and it was quite a sight to see.

I think they had it in the proper perspective... almost every Tiger said they realize there was a lot of work ahead, but that they were going to enjoy this moment for tonight... and why not? I wish more teams were this energetic and excited about baseball.

So are the Yankees going to trade A-Rod? I think it's a good idea. They need some pitching, and A-Rod is never going to be appreciated in New York. ESPN mentioned the Angels....

Tigers are going to win it all...

Nobody can beat their pitching. The NL doesn't have big hitters atm...

You can't be a Cleveland sports fan without being cynical, you have no excuse.

Tigers are going to lose it all!

(and the Mets have 3 people over 100 RBIs, I think that qualifies as big hitters)

Hey the Tigers have sucked since I was born!

The Lions have sucked since I was born!

The Red Wings are starting to suck again!

And the Pistons are slightly above average!

I can flip flop! Damnit!

Minnesota takes the Central on the very last day of the season! Gold.

I'll say: Yankees in 3, Twins in 4, Padres in 3, Dodgers in 5(shocker).

Mets have been terrible lately, ever since clinching it they've slacked off and lost continously, they're rusty because they haven't had anything to play for in a month. I predict that LA will blow out Pedro if he starts the first game, and from there the momentum will be theirs.

This entire playoffs is looking pretty exciting. On one hand in the AL you've got for kick-ass teams, all very dangerous and very capable. In the NL the Mets are way ahead but they've been slipping lately, then the Padres who are playing red hot, and who have the best closing staff in the game, with the Dodgers also decent. St. Louis is the only sitting duck.

 :|

1-6 last year, 0-4 so far this year.

I am undoubtably the worst baseball predictor in the history of mankind.

My picks before the series started would've been Oakland in 6 and the Mets in 5 by the way. Oakies look screwed, but I think I'll get a win by way of the Mets, making me 1-5 going into the World Series... Maybe I can improve on last year... Maybe.

Gah, St. Louis is probably going to lose the game by a tactical error... they were playing great, matching the Mets, but they let Weaver stay in too long. Once he got the slightest tired, Beltran and Delgado started swinging away. I'm impressed by the Cards though, maybe they can steal a few games. They need to win this one though pretty badly, that way Carpenter would have a big time chance to make it 2-0 and put the series in their hands.

They don't need to. The Cardinals pitching is going to get better after Weaver while the Mets' pitching is going to get worse after Glavine. Of course, it's obvious to say they need to win tomorrow.

Goodnight Oakland. Detroit's pitching is so good, I think they're the World Series champs this year. This team has inspirational story written all over it, with the 119 losses 3 years ago, Kenny Rogers, the youngness of the team, the slump down the stretch to go against the Yankees...

Course my thinking that probably means it's the Mets/Cards year.

See, this is what I get for listening to the KJ podcast. I forgot the game was still actually going. Even though I don't think the Cardinals have that much of a chance in the series, I would love for them to pull off the upset, only to see how the Mets fans would react to losing in the NLCS, when they were the sure bet to get to the World Series. I'll probably have to wait for their misery until the World Series is over.

7-6 now and a horrible throw gets Pujols into second.

:cheer:

The Cards are gonna win the series now and make me 0-6 for the year, I can feel it. And I desperatley want them to too, the underdog lovers in me is rearing it's head. Mets are beat up and playing so many games straight is going to deflate them, and outcomes like this will sit heavy. Tigers vs Cards would be such a friggin crazy World Series, the two teams I thought would be out first...

Hey, they can still lose.

Even though the NL will have to beat them.......................................................

(there's probably a better chance of Oakland 4 in a row)

And at least being this years' White Sox means they'll miss the playoffs next year.
