Since July 1st, all of us Canadiens fans have been itching and waiting for Bob Gainey to do his thing. Up until now, he hadn't made any big moves. Finally, he's cashed in for us. Today Gainey was busy.

Firstly, Gainey re-signed Aebischer to a 1-year $1.9 million deal.

Then he did some trading, and got the strong forward Mike Johnson from the Phoenix Coyotes for the Canadiens' 4th round draft pick in 2007, and then traded away Richard Zednick to the Capitals for a third round pick in 2007.

And the big bombshell: the signing of UFA Samsonov to a 2-year deal!!!

Oh, Gainey, I always had faith in you.

PEACE, Mike.

Well, they re-signed Horcoff. Just got Stoll and Hemsky left, and then perhaps some other free agents. A defenceman, maybe?

Peca is a Leaf, a move was expected.

The Oilers are back to the same old crap again now, pretty much.

Does anyone understand the mass exodus from Edmonton? I don't get it. Why are they losing so many quality players? Pronger left for personal reasons and apparently Peca didn't like the city itself. I don't get it.

Don't know why. Spacek also chose to leave Edmonton, he had the same deal there and in Buffalo, and he chose the Sabres out of spite.

I'm disappointed in what's happened to the Oilers during the offseason, we're back to square one now, after all the work we did last year...

Thought this could use an update, given the craziness that happened yesterday. For those of you who missed it, the New York Islanders signed G Rick DiPetro to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract that will pay him $4.5 million a year flat. This is the longest contract in NHL history (Gretzky's 21-year one with the Oilers was done when they were still in the WHA), outdoing another one by the Islanders, that of Alexei Yashin's 10-year, $87.5 million deal. This basically means that Charles Wang, the owner, has no idea how to run a hockey team, and is just out for headlines. I could go into many reasons why this deal is idiotic, but I'll just send you over to TSN - they've got some good editorials there.

Also, Philly GM Bobby Clarke sent an offer sheet to restricted free agent Ryan Kesler of Vancouver - the first time this has been done in five years or so. A lot of GMs thought this was even more idiotic than the previous deal, but I disagree - and Clarke did too, there's a story about him on TSN as well that raised some interesting points.

Oh, and the Oilers finally signed Lupul, which is the last of our restricted free agents. We've now got one of the top forward sets in the league (Smyth, Horcoff, Hemsky, Stoll, Sykora, Lupul, Torres, Moreau, Pisani, etc.), and (hopefully) one of the top goalies in Roloson, but our defense needs work (only Smith, Staois, Bergeron left, plus Tjarnqvist). Though we've got some good young talent like Schremp and Smid. Overall, I'm happy with what Lowe did, as he kept the core of our team, and couldn't do anything about Pronger, Peca (who I'm glad is gone, he was making almost as much as Lupul and Sykora together), and Spacek. So I can't wait for the season to start.

Ok, my predictions:

West:
NorthWest
1. y-Calgary - 112 points
2. x-Vancouver - 106 points
3. x-Edmonton - 88 points
4. Colorado - 82 points
5. Minnesota - 75 points

Central
1. y-Nashville - 105 points
2. x-Detroit - 103 points
3. Chicago - 83 points
4. St. Louis - 70 points
5. Columbus - 66 points

Pacific
1. z-Anaheim - 118 points
2. x-San Jose - 110 points
3. x-Dallas - 90 points
4. Phoenix - 85 points
5. Los Angeles - 72 points

Playoff picture:
1. Anaheim
2. Calgary
3. Nashville
4. San Jose
5. Vancouver
6. Detroit
7. Dallas
8. Edmonton

East:
Northeast
1. y-Ottawa - 110 points
2. x-Buffalo - 102 points
3. x-Toronto - 95 points
4. Montreal - 85 points
5. Boston - 78 points

Atlantic
1. y-New Jersey - 97 points
2. x-NY Rangers - 91 points
3. x-Philadelphia - 90 points
4. Pittsburgh - 79 points
5. NY Islanders - 74 points

Southeast
1. z-Carolina - 112 points
2. x-Tampa Bay - 92 points
3. Washington - 83 points
4. Atlanta - 79 points
5. Florida - 75 points

Playoff seedings:
1. Carolina
2. Ottawa
3. New Jersey
4. Buffalo
5. Toronto
6. Tampa Bay
7. NY Rangers
8. Philadelphia

Bit predictable in the East, but I can't think of it going much other way. I think Toronto and Vancouver will have nice rebounds this year, Vancouver improved their team immensely by replacing Bertuzzi with Luongo, and the fresh start will help them. Toronto always had a good team, but they played like ass last year, with the new coach they should bounce back.

My predictions (no points, though):

WESTERN CONFERENCE

NORTHWEST

1. Calgary
New coach won't slow them down. Tanguay is a huge boost and the defence is only getting better. Should get past the first round this year, too.

2. Edmonton
Maybe I'm a bit biased, but their top nine forwards are one of the best sets in the league. On defence they're a bit weak, admittedly (maybe more than a bit), but they've got Roloson for the whole season. If he plays like he did in the playoffs, the loss of Pronger won't be that bad.

3. Minnesota
Demitra and Gaborik are a lethal combo, plus they got Parrish and Johnsson as well to round out a solid team. Fernandez is a great goalie and should help this team get back into the postseason.

4. Colorado
Losing Blake and Tanguay will hurt a lot, as this team is in a rebuilding stage. Sakic and Hejduk will do their thing, but Theodore's still a question mark and there's no big presence on the blueline. Out of the playoffs for the first time in over a decade (since they were still the Nordiques).

5. Vancouver
They lost Jovanovski, Carter, Bertuzzi, and both Cloutier and Auld. I know Luongo's a star, but he can't win every game for them. They've only got one scoring line and only a couple good defence pairs. Straight to the bottom of the division.

PACIFIC

1. Anaheim
Best defensive duo in the league, a solid supporting cast, and two #1 goalies, one of whom will probably be traded. Should take the divison, conference, and possibly the whole league.

2. San Jose
Best offensive duo in the league, a solid supporting cast, and two #1 goalies, one of whom will probably be traded. Sound familiar? Them and the Ducks will be neck and neck all season.

3. Dallas
They're only getting older, and Turco can't play in the playoffs at all. They got Lindros and Ribeiro to replace Arnott and Guerin, which is fine, but they won't get out of the first round.

4. Phoenix
Jovo will be a big boost, but Roenick and Nolan are just token acqusitions. Their chances hinge on Cujo's play. It'll be close, but they'll miss out on the playoffs again.

5. Los Angeles
They got Blake back, plus Crawford coaching them and Cloutier in net, but lost Demitra and Parrish. Avery will only hurt this team, and they're still rebuilding. Last in the division.

CENTRAL

1. Nashville
Vokoun's back, they've got great forwards and solid defence. They'll finally topple Detroit atop this division and win their first division title. Don't know about the playoffs, though.

2. Detroit
Lost key veterans, and Hasek is their #1 guy again. If he plays like his old self, and doesn't get injured, then this team will do great things again. But if the Dominator falters, the Wings are screwed.

3. Columbus
Nash for a full season will help a lot, but they've got no #1 goalie and not a real solid defensive lineup. Still, they've got lots of offensive skill, so they should do a little bit better this season.

4. St. Louis
Legace in net will help them a lot, but this team's got a long way to go. The American veterans aren't a long-term solution. Still, they won't be the bottom of the barrel this year.

5. Chicago
Trading away their future (Bell, Calder) for Europeans (Havlat, Handzus) may work, or flop completely. But unless Khabibulin can play well, this team is going downhill fast.

OVERALL
1. Anaheim
2. Calgary
3. Nashville
4. San Jose
5. Detroit
6. Edmonton
7. Dallas
8. Minnesota
9. Phoenix
10. Colorado
11. Vancouver
12. Columbus
13. Los Angeles
14. St. Louis
15. Chicago

I'll do the East and the playoffs tomorrow...

Finishing up...

EASTERN CONFERENCE

NORTHEAST

1. Ottawa
Gerber took Carolina to the division title last year, he only faltered in the playoffs. The loss of Chara will sting, but they've got enough depth to stay atop the division.

2. Buffalo
Lost a bit of their depth, but they're still ridiculously loaded up front. Getting Spacek to replace McKee is an upgrade, and they've got two great goalies. Should give the Sens a run for their money.

3. Montreal
The addition of Samsonov and Niinimaa, plus Higgins and Huet for a full season will help this team that can't seem to get any better or worse. Should squeak into the playoffs yet again.

4. Boston
Chara plus Savard means a definite improvement. Bergeron and Boyes will only get better, but their real concern is in net. Can Toivonen and Thomas carry this team? It's a real question mark.

5. Toronto
No matter how much press coverage they get, they're just not that good of a team. Are Mike Peca and Hal Gill going to be the saviours of this franchise? I don't think so. Raycroft seems like another Jim Carey, so goaltending could be an issue as well.

ATLANTIC

1. New Jersey
Kept all their key pieces from last year, so they should top this division once again. Right up against the salary cap, though, so an injury to one of their top players will hurt, as they won't be able to trade for another.

2. New York Rangers
Added Shanahan to a offence that's pretty deep already. Will Lundqvist have a sophomore slump or not? Will Jagr play a whole season? These questions will decide whether this team can go further than four games into the playoffs

3. Philadelphia
Lost some key players, and injuries are always a problem, but if Forsberg can play a full year, he'll be a treat to watch. Goaltending is an issue, as both Esche and Niittymaki seem to be perpetually injured. Bobby Clarke won't help things, either.

4. Pittsburgh
Crosby + Malkin will be huge, and there are a whole bunch of other young players that are just getting better. Should stay out of the basement this year.

5. New York Islanders
One word: DiPietro. This team is in total disarray, and it will show on the ice. Garth Snow won't be running this team, Wang will, and he knows nothing about hockey. An embarassing season coming up.

SOUTHEAST

1. Carolina
Lost a lot of key players, but they're still the champs. They still have Staal, Cole, Ward, Brind'Amour, etc. No repeat of the championship, but another division title is likely

2. Atlanta
Still improving, but if Lehtonen can play a whole season, it'll help. Losing Savard is not good, but Kovalchuk could hit 60 goals this year with his even more curved blade. Just miss out on the playoffs, though

3. Tampa Bay
Apart from their top three, not a lot of offensive depth, and Tortorella isn't exactly great for his goalies. I doubt Denis can carry this team. Hard to believe this team just won the cup two years ago.

4. Florida
Unless Bertuzzi can wake up, this team will go downhill fast, as they no longer have Luongo stopping 40 shots a game. Still, Bertuzzi + Jokinen could be deadly.

5. Washington
Ovechkin will carry the whole team, as nothing much else was done to help during the off-season. Still, he could be the best player in the league right now, so if any player could be a one man team, it's him.

OVERALL
1. Ottawa
2. New Jersey
3. Carolina
4. Buffalo
5. NY Rangers
6. Philadelphia
7. Montreal
8. Boston
9. Atlanta
10. Tampa Bay
11. Toronto
12. Florida
13. Pittsburgh
14. Washington
15. NY Islanders

PLAYOFFS

1 Anaheim vs 8 Minnesota: 4-0 Anaheim
2 Calgary vs. 7 Dallas: 4-2 Calgary
3 Nashville vs. 6 Edmonton: 4-2 Edmonton
4 San Jose vs. 5 Detroit: 4-3 San Jose

1 Ottawa vs. 8 Boston: 4-1 Ottawa
2 New Jersey vs. 7 Montreal: 4-2 New Jersey
3 Carolina vs. 6 Philadelphia: 4-2 Carolina
4 Buffalo vs. 5 NY Rangers: 4-2 Buffalo

1 Anaheim vs. 6 Edmonton: 4-2 Anaheim
2 Calgary vs. 4 San Jose: 4-3 Calgary

1 Ottawa vs. 4 Buffalo: 4-2 Ottawa
2 New Jersey vs. 3 Carolina: 4-3 New Jersey

1 Anaheim vs. 2 Calgary: 4-3 Anaheim
1 Ottawa vs. 2 New Jersey: 4-2 Ottawa

1 Anaheim vs. 1 Ottawa: 4-2 Ottawa

I have a feeling Detroit is uncharacteristically going to falter this season. Just a hunch, since there's only been one game so far, but they lost to Vancouver of all teams tonight.

PEACE, Mike.

Has Ottawa lost their touch? They've lost 2 of their first 3 games now. With a questionable lead goalie (Gerber) and changes to the team, they might not be in the same position they've been in for years now. Of course though, all of these early comments have to be taken very lightly, since the season just started and there is obviously not much to look at.

I bet Carolina isn't going to be so hot this season, unlike last season.

And I still can't pinpoint Toronto. They've shown me (since I've watched 2 of their first 3 games to see how they're playing) some good and some bad. Raycroft is still a big question mark. We'll see how consistent he can be.

And Buffalo is going to dominate this season as one of the big teams early on, I bet.

PEACE, Mike.

Hannu Toivonen should be the Bruins starting goaltender. He showed a lot of promise last night against the Lightning.

Woohooooooooooooo. I love the NHL.

The Wild are off to a great start, 3-0 so far. I'm hoping for a good season finally, after making the semis randomly a while ago. They are my teammmm, discluding Edmonton/Calgary etc.

Nashville has had ridiculous games lately. Amazing offence, awful defence. 8-6 type of games so far, heh. I think they'll need to improve that area if they want to be a top team this year, and I think they will eventually... they might be the NHL's version of the Miami Dolphins for a while this year though.

Buffalo, Anaheim, and San Jose seem the strongest so far.

I wish I could've watched the Edmonton game last night, I couldn't find any channels! It sounded amazing, Ryan Smyth with 3 goals in 2 minutes, Cheechoo with a hat trick as well.

Wild are 4-0 now, but I think Atlanta might be even more impressive... 3-0, but with 13 goals for and 4 against. I personally dislike them, but hey, it's a nice start for them.

Pittsburgh is also playing well, I think Crosby is winning the Hart this year, that entire team are going to be superstars soon, soo much young talent there. If they get some defence they have a shot at being the next big dynasty, they have like 5 players who could be the best in the league in a couple years, Sid as their Wayne.

Nashville is heading down pretender lane fast.

Toronto was winning 6-3 last night heading into the third period, but then New Jersey scored 3 goals in the third to tie it at 6, and then won the game 7-6 in a shootout. Toronto really blew it.

PEACE, Mike.

What a memorable shot for Sundin's 500th goal. I don't know how Kipursoff missed it though.

Buffalo is amazing! Embarassing for Philly, dunno about their team this year.

I'm also warming up to the new Sabres jersey, the logo is still kind of stupid but I do like the overall gold color scheme on them, and the blue sabres one is among my favorite in the league. I liked the cartoon buffalo, but I can see why them and Anaheim would want something a bit less goofy now that they're contenders.

This year is so friggin backwards so far, I don't get it. Buffalo with one of the most dominating starts to a season ever, Minnesota and Atlanta on top of their divisions, Toronto(with Tucker as the star?), Pittsburgh, and Chicago are playing well, while Ottawa, Calgary, and Phillie are all playing shitty... Things are starting to change direction though, like Chicago was doing well but now they're coming back down to earth, Ottawa woke up today.

I still think some of these trends will stick though. The Wild are proving they are for real by beating San Jose 4-1 the game after their first loss, Atlanta seems like a generally strong team, I think Ottawa will come out as a top player again quickly. I'm not sure about Calgary though, and Philadelphia certainly seems like crap through and through.
