Bravo! Double standards galore.

Spiderman is basically a teenage soap yet it is touted to be oh so brilliant but Superman showing some of his softer side is being brushed off as gay. The same goes for the supposed campiness.

I'm so sick of this Superman bashing, can't wait till it finally opens and hopefully makes a gazillion dollars just so that all the buffoons shut the fuck up.

What if I hate Spider-Man (I do.)

Can I go on hating Superman without being accused of double standards?

Understandable and fair enough.

I can't wait for the film to open and hopefully bomb into oblivion just so I can laugh at the supporters, hehe.

I'm with you. I didn't like Spider-Man either; so much so that I never saw the sequel.

And Singer refers to SR as his first "chick flick"? Yeah, *that's* the way to get me into that seat... *blech*

Go on, hate Superman all you want. I'm just annoyed at a few posters here who constantly seem to make fun of the movie, or finding faults with everything to the point where one could get the notion it's some personal bias thing.

thats what ive been talking bout. even if w.b. blows it iwth their own tv spots like they did for batman v for vendetta n poseidon, theyve got all these companies to back em up. duracell now, captn crunch already, this is pepsico promotion is the size of siths endorcement last year, and we all know how humongous that tie in plan was. but if w.b. getd this n cleans up their act with tv spots....holy shit.

This is a puzzling problem.

Emotional Spiderman did well.
Emotional Batman did well.
Emotional Hulk disappointed.
Emotional Superman...?

I don't know. Maybe because Spiderman and Batman started out as humans. Spidey was a normal (emotional) teen. Batman's origin story is all emotion and revenge. Superman, far as I can tell, is a lunk 'o goodness. Superman 2 survived the emotion because we got to know him in Superman 1. Either way, it should be interesting to see if Routh is up to the acting challenge.

I don't believe this will affect the box office though. There still isn't much pent-up demand.
Like anything else, it's going to come down to WOM. There wasn't much pent-up demand for pirates in 2003 either.

Your channel to Yoda must be weak, as I'm not even going to be GOING to see SR. It's not worth my time and money.

duracell commercial:

You hear an alarm clock beeping in an apartment
the super-suit is hangin in the closet, theres a pic of lois on the nightstand
followed by a closeup on BR's eyes opening up (probably from the movie) then via X-ray vision, we see the duracell battery in the alarm clock as he reaches out and turns it off...then a narrator says "Even superheroes need need to wake up on time" or something like that followed by the shot of him flying straight up leaving lois (Daily Planet roof) with what sounded like the last 3 notes of the beginning part of "the planet krypton" which was immediately followed by the 3-note Duracell theme then it said "See superman returns in theatres june 28th"

hbo will be airing a superman returns making of shjow on the 19th.

i LOVE how this films marketing and awareness is getting bigger and biger yet guys like shack and baumer talk of lowering their already patheticly low predits

You act as though product placements like that are this cool, radical new thing that nobody has seen before.

If placements ads really work, I really think politicians should jump in the bandwagon and use pepsi to endorse and sway more people to vote for him. Can you imagine George W's face on a can of pepsi or John Kerry on a bag of doritos? :whaa:

Drink pepsi and vote for Bush

wow.i guess they are not effectie at all, seeing as othermovies like spiderman 2 and sith have used them before, so their not new and dont work at all.

people hear are acting as superman having a love sotry and showing emotion is radical new thign nobody likes...when its the exact opposite. superman n lois love story is one of the most famous love storys EVER. Everyone knows, superman is with Lois Lane. they know it way better then spiderman is with mj. the only fictional love story i can think of thayt everyone knows about more then superman n lois is romeo n juliet, really.

You dont get what Positive Jon is saying. Sith and Spiderman 2 succeeded not because they have placement products but because they had a nice extablished franchise and had extreme buzz, Sith had the "last of the SW trilogy" buzz around it and Spiderman 1 had it because it was the FIRST time Spiderman has been on the big screen, the same way as the first Batman was. Do you understand? A 20 year wait for a movie whos last movie that didnt set the world on fire hardly qualifies as the latter two I mentioned. Product placement is hardly new because they have used it in all movies that they think has a kid fanbase like Babe,Madagascar, etc. You are also neglecting Superman toys have been around before movies. All this hardly qualifies as a 300 million gross when its franchise has fallen way below the grosses of SW,Indiana Jones and even Batman

Please stop comparing Superman Returns with the likes of Spiderman 2 or Sith. One is a restart (or continuation if you will) of an old series, the other sequels of recently hugely popular franchises. They didn't do gangbusters because of some tie-ins and TV ads.

EDIT:
Got beaten to it.

Seriously, do you guys need to describe every single Superman commercial that goes on the air? We get the point...

You guys go negative over the smallest things, so yes. And you were the guys who said SR had little marketing, so now we have to show you that when the release date got closer, the marketing is heavy.

At this point, this debate has been so long that we have to bring up little things now because that's all we CAN argue about now.

YEAH!! SO ALL U HATERS SHUT IT!!!

But do we really need to hear things like, "so I'm walking down the street, and this little boy is jumping out of a tree pretending to be Superman. $400+ million total"? It becomes borderline ridiculous.

I promised myself that I would no longer partake in this debate, but I thought I would add my two cents:

Singer's comments about this being his first 'chick flick' do not bode well for this film's box office prospects. If there is more teary-eyed emotional scenes than kick-ass action scenes, it will seriously cut down on both word of mouth and repeat viewers. And that will kill its legs. The opening will stay the same (roughly $50-60 million three day) but the total could be a lot lower. We all saw what happened when a comic book film took itself too seriously (The Hulk). But I suppose Batman Begins was pretty serious, too. But it wasn't sappy.

We'll just have to wait and see. ;)
