Really!? I'm surprised as well. I mean I hoped it would do well, but Christ.

On the downside, the kids that were sat around me seemed rather non-plussed by the film. They certainly wouldn't shut the fuck up throughout.

You should go to late night shows to avoid kids. It is hard to do that during the week though. ;)

Charlie could get around $200M+ overseas. It is at $67m with quite a few big territories yet to come.

Asian markets feel b.o.'s pain

By Blake Murdoch
SYDNEY -- Can an 800-pound gorilla restore the ailing Asian boxoffice?
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/fi ... 1001011500

For 2005, ticket sales are down 5%-15% year over year across all key Asian markets, and industry participants say it's the December release of Universal's "King Kong," from director Peter Jackson, that is the kind of potentially monstrous hit film needed to break the drought.

'King Kong' is the key," said Mike Selwyn, United International Pictures' supervisor for Australia/New Zealand, where boxoffice for the first half is down year over year by about 14% and 13%, respectively, according to each country's Motion Picture Distributors' Assn. "We need a standout title. If 'King Kong' makes anything approaching 'Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,' it could provide a huge surge for the end of year."

Added Kurt Rieder, UIP's Asian supervisor: "Sure, there will be the next 'Harry Potter' film and 'Chronicles of Narnia' later this year, but everyone knows to some extent what they can expect from these kind of films. 'King Kong' is a wild card."

The reality is that 2005 is becoming a difficult year at the Asian boxoffice, with distributors saying many major releases are not meeting expectations, echoing the lament of their European counterparts (HR 7/12).

Plus, the Asian market continues to be eroded by increasing competition from DVDs, rampant piracy -- the MPA estimates its member companies lose in excess of $896 million in potential revenue annually in the Asia-Pacific region alone -- as well as patchy performances this year by local offerings.

But, distributors say, the slump this time is more product-related.

"This is true through the first six months of the year," said Bob Girard, 20th Century Fox International Film Distributors' Tokyo-based Asian supervisor, who noted that Fox is having a "stellar summer" with titles like "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith."

"We've certainly experienced a drought, and I think the MPA member companies will experience a softer year overall," Rieder said.

However, he believes the studios are "kicking themselves" over the downturn given the presence of such titles last year as the final installment of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Shrek 2" and breakout hit "The Passion of the Christ." Plus, there were some standout local blockbusters in 2004, a trend sadly not repeated so far this year in most key markets.

"With these kind of hit films in the mix, it's just a case that 2004 was hard to top," Rieder said.

Asia is a complex and diverse market for film distribution, with tastes and market forces varying wildly. It also includes the U.S.' second-biggest consumer of films, Japan, and the world's two most populous nations, China and India -- both of which are defying the trend but also are nascent in terms of delivering results that are meaningful and hard to verify to distributors despite each market's enormous cinemagoing potential.

In Japan, the U.S.' biggest foreign market, boxoffice receipts for the first six months are down 11.5% year over year, according to MPA sources, and as much as 21% for the second quarter.

Although figures for the first half are not yet available, the market's boxoffice total is expected to be down at least 11.5% versus last year, which took in $833 million for the same period, according to Rengo Report. That indicates there will need to be an exceptionally strong comeback to top last year's boxoffice total of $2 billion.

"Local productions are beating out Hollywood tentpoles at the boxoffice ...," said Mina Mita of the motion picture department at Fuji TV, Japan's dominant film producer. "For foreign films, the market will continue to be difficult, but for Japanese films, there is increased enthusiasm from audiences." Fuji TV's film "Negotiator" is the year's highest-grossing film to date, and a follow-up, "The Suspect," is due for release Aug. 27 via Toho.

Japan, home of the "Godzilla" films, also loves films with big monsters. Said Girard: "Undoubtedly, 'King Kong' will be a big holiday entry."

Australia, which has enjoyed almost unbroken growth for more than 12 years, is down nearly 14% for the first six months, including drops exceeding 20% in some months like January (with no "Lord of the Rings" in release), according to the MPDAA.

However, said Selwyn and other distributors, as current major releases kick in and taking the end-of-year lineup into account, "We're looking to claw back some of the loss, and the hope is that we'll be able to a get a (reduction in overall boxoffice) of only single figures."

In Hong Kong, where boxoffice in recent years has been enlivened by major local hits but generally flattened out, the six-month tally for this year dropped 10% year over year to HK$437 million ($56 million), according to the Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories Motion Picture Industry Assn.

In the absence of hits like Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle," the local film year-over-year market share has dropped from HK$234 million to HK$136 million ($17.5 million), while the foreign market share has climbed almost 20% to HK$300 million ($38.5 million).

Part of the decline is a drop in local production, according to MPIA chief executive Woody Tsung, who estimates the number of Hong Kong productions could drop from 60 last year to somewhere in the 40s this year.

So far, hitting the top of the boxoffice chart is Media Asia's "Initial D," which has grossed HK$37.5 million ($4.8 million), but that is a far cry from the HK$60 million pulled in by "Kung Fu Hustle" or Chow's previous film, "Shaolin Soccer."

"War of the Worlds," "Sith" and "Fantastic Four" did well but fell below the "blockbuster" level -- reckoned to be at least HK$30 million ($4 million).

"The boxoffice for the first half of the year looks bad because there were few films that could be considered blockbusters," Media Asia assistant general manager Chu Yam-chi said.

South Korea, which in the past few years has seen domestic films snatch more than 50% of its boxoffice from imported films, was down 15% to $124.5 million year over year for the first six months, based on metropolitan Seoul figures used to track national annual boxoffice, IM Pictures said.

But distributors there also attribute that to last year's strength and product lineup.

"I think last year was really exceptional," said Jennifer Muhn, senior vp sales and acquisitions at major distributor/exhibitor CJ Entertainment. "(The market) had a lot of good titles in the first half of last year."

They include "Silmido" and "Taegukgi," both of which earned more than $66 million, the highest-grossing films yet released in Korea.

"I think the second half will be stronger," Muhn said. "A lot of big titles are coming out, such as (local films) 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance,' 'The Shadlowless Sword' and 'Typhoon.' "

For the year to date in Taiwan, the boxoffice gross is just more than $81 million, about the same as last year, according to the Taipei Film Trade Assn. However, distributors and exhibitors are projecting a 10% decline for the full year because of the relative lack of blockbusters compared with last year.

That's compounded by "Sith," "War of the Worlds" and "Batman Begins" falling short of expectations, said Ambassador Theatres president Joe Chang.

In India, where 2004 boxoffice was estimated to be close to $28 million, a growth in multiplexes has helped boxoffice rise around 10% year-over-year to date. The actual figure is estimated to be $13.4 million-$15.2 million according to data compiled by Sunir Khetarpal, country head of the entertainment and media banking group of Mumbai-based Yes Bank.

Domestic films account for about 90% of the market, which this year has seen a more commercially appealing spread of local releases, according to distributors.

"Even if you assume a leakage of between 15%-30% in reported figures, the gross boxoffice collections (in 2005) look promising given that the major films for this year will start rolling from August into the festive season in the fall," Khetarpal said.

This year's runaway hits to date includes the comedy "Bunty Aur Babli" (Bunty and Bubbly), which grossed $9.3 million, as well as big-budget period drama "Parineeta," currently in release.

Shravan Shroff, managing director of leading Mumbai-based distributor and exhibitor Shringar Films, said domestic films this year generally are performing better than U.S. films, some of which -- he points to "War of the Worlds" -- in his opinion have underperformed.

In China, only about 1,000 cinemas have computers to track boxoffice. However, the Film Bureau, which comes under the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, has authorized weekly newspaper China Film News to print the boxoffice data it collects each week every Thursday.

"These numbers may not be very accurate," a Film Bureau official said. "China is in the process of rebuilding its (boxoffice) computer network. These numbers are a reference."

Official estimates put China's boxoffice this year at $47.6 million, up 22% compared with the corresponding period.

Some industry insiders in China are skeptical about the officially reported boxoffice jump - and their doubt stands to reason. By this time last year official boxoffice statistics showed the third installment of "Lord of the Rings" and "The Day After Tomorrow" were well on their way to earning 86.3 million yuan ($10.4 million) and 82.9 million yuan ($10 million), respectively. This year, only "Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" approaches these earnings in Chinese cinemas with 75.23 million yuan ($9.09 million) in boxoffice receipts in the seven weeks on screens nationwide through July 10 (latest figures available).

In a bid to match last year's soaring summer ticket sales of an estimated 1.5 billion yuan ($181 million), many cinemas last month began to sell discounted tickets on Tuesdays.

Last year's boxoffice represented 58% growth from 2003, when the outbreak of SARS shut many cinemas for four months, according to Film Bureau data.

So far this year, China's top boxoffice earner is "Sith," which by July 10 had earned 75.23 million yuan ($9.09 million) nationally. However, the current "blackout" of foreign releases through to the end of August could affect overall 2005 results.

The compact market of Singapore remains mostly flat year over year, according to figures supplied by UIP. Another exception to the downward trend is Malaysia, which is estimated to have grown more than 20% compared with last year based on UIP's figures because of more screens opening, less censorship, a crackdown on piracy and a highly diverse ethnic slate of releases.

---------------------

It's going to be one hell of a December in South Korea....

The 2 movies mentioned above Tyhpoon (Taepung) and Shadowless Sword (starring Jang Dong-gun from Taegukgi) are both currently scheduled for a December release. And if that wasn't enough, Harry Potter 4 lands on December 16th....and if King Kong sticks to its Worldwide release date, it could open within days of Harry Potter 4.

On a side note: Marrying The Mafia 2 will get a fall 2005 release, the original Marrying the Mafia made over 5m admissions, on par with TTT.

But of course, battles on this scale as happened before, i.e. Silmido against the 2nd weekend of ROTK.

Island floats to UK, Mexico in foreign rescue mission

Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles 12 August 2005

Warner Bros Pictures International stable-mates The Island and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory will be the ones to beat this weekend with a slew of major market debuts.

Michael Bay’s sci-fi action famously flopped when it launched in North America through DreamWorks, but its international prospects look a different story.

Currently standing at more than $42.3m from overseas theatres, the $120m plus picture was due to open in Mexico on Aug 10 followed by the UK on Aug 12, where the presence of British star Ewan McGregor in the lead role should help it to a solid opening.

The Island also opens the same day in Russia, and as last year’s hit run of Timur Bekmambetov’s Night Watch proved, the Russians like their sci-fi action pictures.

Meanwhile, Charlie was due to open in Germany on Aug 11 and Spain a day later and has wasted little time in reaching $67.3m since it launched several weeks ago.

Latest figures released by Warner Bros executives put Batman Begins on more than $160.2m and House Of Wax on more than $35.2m.

Among the other studios, Buena Vista International opens Sin City in Germany on Aug 11 and Spain a day later, looking to add to its $28m international haul to date.

Thriller Dark Water opens in director Walter Salles’ homeland of Brazil on Aug 12. Still in the early days of release, the picture has grossed $4.2m to date.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy opens in Italy on Aug 12 and has taken $44.2m so far, while Herbie: Fully Loaded stands at $33m and opens in South Africa on Aug 12 and Taiwan on Aug 13.

Fox International opens Fantastic Four in South Korea on Aug 12 on 251 prints, and executives are looking for a solid launch to boost the Marvel Comics adaptation’s $127.2m running total. Italy, Japan and China are still to open.

Perfect Catch, known in North America as Fever Pitch, opens in its first international market of the UK on Aug 12 on 300 screens. Directed by the Farrelly brothers, the film is an Americanised remake of Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch novel, with baseball mania substituting for soccer madness.

The book inspired its own British film in 1997, with Colin Firth starring as an Arsenal fanatic; it opened in seventh place on $746,052 on 223 screens in April.

The new version has diehard Boston Red Sox supporter Jimmy Fallon trying to woo Drew Barrymore. It will be interesting to see how British audiences take to this Hollywood treatment.

Mr And Mrs Smith, which was sold through Summit, has taken $190.6m through all distributors and is going great guns in France, where it ranks number one after two weekends after raking in a mighty $12.3m through SND.

I Heart Huckabee’s gets a wide release in Spain on 190 screens on Aug 12.

Sony Pictures Releasing International opens Bewitched in Mexico on Aug 12 on 350; to date the picture has grossed $7.2m from Australia.

Kung Fu Hustle opens Down Under on Aug 11 on 107 screens and stands at $80.6m, while Stealth has no scheduled openings and has sold $13.4m in international tickets to date. The Longest Yard stands at $15.4m.

Paramount’s War Of The Worlds has amassed $327.3m through UIP to date and has launched in every major market. DreamWorks International’s Madagascar stands at $227.8m.

Paramount’s family remake Bad News Bears opens in the UK on Aug 12 through UIP and is in the embryonic stages of its international run.

Universal’s comedy Kicking And Screaming opens in Australia on Aug 11. The Gothic thriller Skeleton Key has grossed $7.5m to date and launches in North America this weekend.

"The Island," continuing to find foreign footing, topped a lukewarm international frame with $13.9 million at more than 4,200 screens in 33 markets during weekend, edging the still-sweet "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
"The Island," which stumbled Stateside with $34.1 million in four weeks, has cumed a respectable $63 million offshore for Warner Bros. Top performances came from the U.K. with a solid launch of $2.6 million at 413 playdates to finish second behind "Charlie," and Mexico with $1.91 million debut at 500 sites for a 34% share of the latter market.

"The Island" also opened decently in Russia with $1.2 million at 241 engagements, in Holland with $434,500 at 86 and in Argentina with $198,800 at 50. Best holdover performance came from Germany with a 40% soph-sesh drop to $1.66 million while Spain saw second-frame results plunge 55% to $1.13 million.

"The Island" has racked up nearly half its offshore gross in two Asian markets: South Korea with a remarkable $19 million and Japan with $9.4 million. Korean fourth-frame results fell 54% to $1 million amid competishcompetish from three local titles and the launch of "Fantastic Four" while Japanese takings declined just 1.5%, thanks to the Obon holiday, from the third weekend with $793,700.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" continued to cook up tasty international results for Warners with $13.6 million at more than 3,500 playdates in 30 markets, with its top performance by far coming from the U.K., where third-frame takings declined 36% to $4.96 million. Foreign cume has hit $91 million, with exactly half of that coming from the U.K. with $45.5 million, or 20% above "The Incredibles"; worldwide total for Tim BurtonTim Burton's fantasy comedy is near $275 million.

"Charlie" opened moderately in Spain with $1.48 million at 308 sites and in Germany with $1.45 million at 484. It overcame typhoon conditions in Hong Kong to lead the market with $643,600 from 41 prints, topping openings of Thai entry "Tom Yum Goong" and "Land of the Dead"; in Turkey, "Charlie" launched in first with $211,100 at 79, representing a dominant 46% share.

Tapping into the same family audience as "Charlie," "Madagascar" remained reliable with $8.2 million, led by a $2.7 million launch in Japan. Holdover bizbiz for the CGI toontoon stayed significant in Germany, declining 48% to $1.7 million, and in the U.K. with $1.2 million for a 21% drop, lifting the respective cumes to $36.8 million and $35.7 million after five weeks in each market.

"Madagascar" has totaled $252 million in foreign markets, pushing the worldwide cume past $441 million.

Overall offshore biz appeared restrained as only three pics topped $6 million, and that trio followed the ongoing trend of lagging the same frame last year. "The Island," "Charlie" and "Madagascar" combined for $35.7 million -- $4 million short of the 2004 session, when "I Robot" led with $18.8 million, followed by "King Arthur" with $12.2 million and "Spider-Man 2" with $9.2 million.

BVI's "Herbie: Fully Loaded" showed moderate traction overseas with $5.8 million, led by a French soph seshsesh that declined 40% to $1.4 million at 575 playdates and a second BlightyBlighty frame with $1.2 million at 442, falling just 12%. "Herbie" has cumed $42 million offshore and should drive past the $63.8 million Stateside take by the end of its foreign run.

BVI's "Sin City" debuted decently in Germany with $2.5 million at 350 engagements, eclipsing launches of both "Kill Bill""Kill Bill" pics, and in Spain with $1.7 million at 305, matching the "Hellboy" opening. "Sin" also opened in first in Austria with $505,000 at 70 and in second in New Zealand with $200,000 at 40.

The year's top offshore performers -- UIP's "War of the Worlds" and Fox's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" -- continued to contribute at the end of their runs. "War" declined 34% to $4.1 million with the best perfperf coming from Japan, where the Obon holiday lifted the seventh weekend figure 33% to $1.3 million and the Japanese cume to $48.6 million.

"War of the Worlds" has topped $332 million offshore and $560 million worldwide.

"Revenge of the Sith" also benefited from the Japanese holiday as sixth weekend grosses rose 15% to $2.8 million at 298 playdates, edging "Madagascar" to mark the sixth consecutive win in that market. "Sith" has cumed $444 million overseas; worldwide total has hit $822.5 million.

Fox's "Fantastic Four" won in its South Korean launch with $2.2 million at 248 playdates, pushing the studio's foreign cume to $128 million and worldwide takings to $276 million.

"Land of the Dead" showed some life with a $1 million opening in France for Wild Bunch and another $1.1 million at 655 sites in 19 UIP markets.

UIP's "Skeleton Key," which launched offshore ahead of its domestic opening, scared up modest returns with $1.8 million at 874 sites in eight markets, lifting foreign cume to $9.5 million. Top perf came from its French soph sesh with $500,000 at 246 for a 50% decline, followed by a Taiwanese launch of $400,000 and a U.K. third frame of $330,000 at 236, sliding 57%.

Sony's "Bewitched" conjured up lukewarm biz with $1.8 million at 588 screens in eight markets with most of that coming from its Mexican launch of $1.2 million at 350 sites and Singapore with $200,000 at 27 to lead the latter market.

Fox's "Robots" rang up $915,000 at 417 in its third Japanese frame for a territorial total of $5.6 million and a $124.5 million foreign cume. Fox's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," near the end of its run, shot up $635,000 at 78 screens in its second Belgian frame to lift the distribdistrib's offshore total to $143 million.

Fox's baseball-themed "Fever Pitch," retitled "Perfect Catch" for U.K. audiences, generated a quiet $455,000 at 254 U.K. playdates in its first foreign launch outside the Caribbean markets. "Fever Pitch""Fever Pitch" was based on Nick Hornby's memoir about his devotion to the Arsenal soccer club, leading to a 1997 Brit film of the same name.

CGI is still massive overseas, Madagascar only proves that. I'm actually impressed thus far by The Island's overseas run. Hopefully it will continue to do well...its a shame Dreamworks screwed up its marketing campaign here.

I agree on the Island. DW's executives deserve dumbasses of the year award for screwing up two of their live action movies (Ring 2 and The Island)

Not all CGI movies are monster hits overseas. Robots has made only $120M overseas. Looks like Madagascar will pass $300M overseas. That is uberblockbuster territory.

Ah yeah you are correct. Still, $120 million is nothing to scoff at. Considering the cost of the film, that should cover most of the budget alone, as it was only $75 million.
